  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Erika Kirk Rejects Revenge for Husband's Killer

I disagree. Context is everything.

If Erika Kirk wished to make such a statement, she could have done so in a different venue where a message of forgiveness would not have mingled with vengance and outrage. As it is, the result is risking sanctifying MAGA's bigotry and contempt, which are not Christian values.
No, no, no, and a thousand times no. This was precisely the time to say that, when there is anger. You don't like MAGA? You don't like her? No one's asking you to. Her words were not for you, though Christians would do well to take them to heart. Jesus forgave those who crucified Him; She is following Christ's example.

What you and me and every other Christian should ask is if we could do likewise in that situation.

A perspective on Baptism and the plan of salvation that I have not heard before

Hello Boughtwithaprice, I don't have time to discuss your entire thread right now, but I will answer your first question with the following from the CCC, since this is the Denominational Theology board and your "denomination" is the Roman Catholic Church.

I. WHAT IS THIS SACRAMENT CALLED?
1214 This sacrament is called Baptism, after the central rite by which it is carried out: to baptize (Greek baptizein ) means to "plunge" or "immerse"; the "plunge" into the water symbolizes the catechumen's burial into Christ's death, from which he rises up by resurrection with Him, as "a new creature."

More to come later (Dv)!

God bless you!!

--David
p.s. - question, why did you pick this particular board, Denominational Specific Theology, for this thread? Thanks :)
I picked it to allow all those that call themselves Christian to discuss this topic. I did not want limitations of denominations to restrict discussion, but it is here in theology, as non Christian opinion is not necessary for this topic, but if interested, non Christians can come and read the thread but are prevented from debating

Thanks for the question

Kimmel is Back

I don't really care what Kimmel says. But when you work for an employer, and doing monologues as part of that job, saying whatever you want is not a free speech issue. I imagine he will double down, he, Disney, ABC, and most of Hollywood are leftists, after all.

The idea that the shooter is MAGA is pretty stupid, though. His family was MAGA, they turned him in. If you want to make up a lie, you'd think you could come up with a better one than that. Maybe that's what they are all saying in his echo chamber though
Even i was fooled for a day or so when I read he might be linked to the right-wing groypers and some of their statements on the shell casings. We see mistakes all the time about motives of perpetrators. Kimmel is shallow and insensitive. Given his show why should we expect more? I doubt I have watched him in total more than a few hours over the years, While I would prefer better programming, I say let the market decide. Seems like he won't last anyway.

Citing Charlie Kirk murder, Tennessee pastor demands removal of 'Hate Has No Home' signs

The slogan has become something of a "catch-all" for every left-wing ideal/initiative, the implication that being that opposition to any of them = "Hate (that is not welcome in this home)"
One might object to gay rights because of one's religious beliefs. Well...OK. One might think that science is junk because one is not well educated. Well...OK. One may think that democracy has failed and we need a monarchy. Well...OK. And one might be a racist because...well, because you're stupid.

If I'm going to put a sign in my yard saying Don't Hate, then I'm going to make sure I cover a few bases. Saves me putting half a dozen up.

You don't like it? Oh no...

A perspective on Baptism and the plan of salvation that I have not heard before

Water was not created first in the literal sense, but was already present in the "formless deep" at the start of creation. God then organized and shaped the existing water by separating it to form the sky and the seas on the second and third days.
The formless deep represents the antithesis of God's order. It is a state of chaos and darkness from which God brings light and life
Water is matter, which is created by God, as water is not God. It was present before the creation of the Earth and even light itself, but it was not eternally existent as God Himself
We do not call it the antithesis of God’s order, it was just present at the start of creation.
There is no chaos in water. In the absence of light from which comes heat, water is highly structured. It is crystalline ice.
Depending on the amount present, water is capable of extreme force in manipulating other matter. Just try to go to the bottom of the Marinas trench, or even try to visit the wreck of the titanic. Water was a very ordered way to bring about creation
God starts with a solid ball of ice approximately 6 billion miles thick. Yes I am speculating, as I was not there, but the process can be imagined from known observations. God said let there be light and water begins to melt. The light of the first day is enough to melt all the water.
Since ice is structured, there do not exist the extreme pressures that are present with liquid water. Once liquified the pressures quickly rise to astronomical levels. The second day describes the firmament which divides the waters. At extreme hydraulic pressure, hydrogen forms into a metal. The word of God says that He formed the firmament. As the light of the fist day continues to orbit the water in 24hr cycles, the water dissipates into space. The Earth was formed in the center protected by the firmament
As the water dissipates into space, the pressure is relieved and the metallic hydrogen firmament also dissipates. Metallic hydrogen becomes a gas and we see hydrogen as the most abundant element in the universe. What remains in the Earth is our atmosphere.
The light of the first day was only necessary to melt the water, and after three days, has fulfilled its purpose and begins to dissipate. God formed the sun and the stars on the fourth day

I do not see water as the antithesis of God’s order, rather a demonstration of His great power and glory, before which I am completely humbled.

This small Virginia island could be underwater before the next century

Well the hole in the ozone layer was patched up pretty fast thanks to global collective action on CFCs!

Honestly, think it through!
Eh, maybe. Every so often we hear of one opening over the Arctic or Antarctic, so it still happens, it's just not reported as much. Odd thing, that.

Might the Laws of God actually change on the New Earth?

If you are saying it is evil to "show up to a building"
No, but it's pretty funny you read it that way.

Evil is within every person at all times

Therefore using the "Saturday Sabbath" to accuse other believers who don't of "breaking the law" and therefore the potential condemnation and worse that comes with it along with the false self justification for those who do Saturday Sabbath is a nasty little mix for the proponents. Venomous

This small Virginia island could be underwater before the next century

That’s terrifying!
Ah, maybe. That's life on rivers and coasts. Islands vanish and islands arise. Entire rivers change course. There was the instance of someone wanting to find and salvage liquor that was on a steamboat that went down in the Mississippi, only to find that the location was now under a corn field. Know of at least one historic site that already been eroded, and it's much higher above water level than Tangier Island. Even barrier islands move, rolling back inland when sea levels rise and rolling back toward the oceans as they subside. It's all in flux.

What Does the Lord Jesus Mean by “Doing the Will of the Heavenly Father “?

During Noah's time, God's will is for Noah to build an ark and for everyone to go into the ark.

That does not mean we should do that today. We must learn to rightly divide the word of truth.
All people yet today remain having evil present within them. Therefore God remains with a perpetual prerogative to take out anyone at any time He so pleases. No different than Noah's time or any other time for that matter. Just a matter of time and circumstance.

And when that happens the tempter or his own within that person is made homeless, and the spirit returns to God who gave it. Luke 11:24, Eccl. 12:7

Erika Kirk Rejects Revenge for Husband's Killer

My fear is that her forgiving of the killer will be used by the defense during the sentencing stage after the killer's conviction to ask for a lightened sentence. What Erika should have done after forgiving the killer was to followup by saying she accepts the appropriate punishment that would be carried out by the men who God has assigned to be His actors in making sure the perpetrators of evil face the consequences. Forgiveness and punishment are not the same, and shouldn't be linked.
Why fear life without parole? I would say give him a chance at conversion, but since the death penalty takes twenty years or so, he will have that.

This small Virginia island could be underwater before the next century

Tangier Island — off the mainland coast of Virginia — is one of the last inhabited islands in the Chesapeake Bay. Before colonial settlers arrived in the 1700s, Indigenous people likely traveled to the island in the summer to take advantage of the abundant fish and crabs, according to the National Park Service. Many descendants of the original settlers — with surnames like Crockett, Parks and Thomas — have remained to this day.

Since 1850, the island has lost two-thirds of its landmass to erosion and sea level rise. On average, the island sits just three feet above sea level.

The island could be almost entirely underwater in the next 50 years, according to experts like Dave Schulte, a climate change researcher and ecological restoration specialist who studied Tangier extensively.

Tangier's numbers are plummeting. The most recent census estimate puts the population at 240, a 30% decrease from 2022.

President Trump even called Tangier Mayor James Eskridge after seeing a story about the island on CNN. Trump told Eskridge then not to worry about rising sea levels, that the island would be there for hundreds more years. In 2024, Trump got 88% of the vote on the island.

Still, though Tangier is less than 100 miles from Washington, D.C., Schulte said: "They haven't gotten any real help. You know, and it just amazes me that even after all this attention and the dire situation that they're in, they're just not getting the help that they need." [Why do they need help when the president says the island will be there for centuries?]

In a statement, the White House said the Department of the Interior takes a "proactive approach to support Tangier" through the U.S. Geological Survey's monitoring of rising sea levels to inform management of the coast, and conservation efforts by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to sustain crabbing.

Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia has helped secure funding for the island: $800,000 in 2024 and $10 million this year.

"So, $10 million may not do the whole job, but I think it's a huge message that the federal government is paying attention," Kaine says.

Schulte estimated that it would cost $250 to 350 million to fully protect and restore the island. That would include applying protective stone along vulnerable shorelines, retrofitting plumbing and electrical throughout the town and raising the system of one-lane roads for transportation.
They picked the low-hanging fruit on this one. To understand why, first go to Google Earth and check out the elevations. Then pull up The National Map, select topo map, and verify. A far cry from a certain AGW advocate looking out a window during an interview and making an off-the-cuff prediction that a road that's still high and dry would already be underwater by now. They are learning.

The question is what sort of help did he have in mind? After the Great Galveston Hurricane, the US Army Corp of Engineers raised the entire town. Somehow, I doubt that would be acceptable, as it would damage what ecology there is of the island. The topo map shows practically the entire island as a marshy area. Did he want to move the residents? That feasible, and such has been done before. More money for studies? That would line the pockets of those doing the study, but wouldn't help the residents. What exactly is the "help" do they have in mind?

Since this is low-hanging fruit, this is one climate prediction that might actually happen. That said, there's a group of islands in the Pacific that were already predicted to be underwater by now, and - as a real head scratcher - seem to be increasing rather than decreasing in area. There will still be some on this forum around in fifty years who can see if the prediction about Tangier Island plays out.

For all eternity - "From Sabbath to Sabbath shall all mankind come before God to Worship"

Got it! From that we take the immense leap from resting and relaxing from six days of toil to engaging in nineteenth-century American Protestant religious activities.
Nineteenth century? Jesus' example is seen from the first century. The Apostles' likewise. Moses' well before that.

Are you a Christian? If so what denomination? I am SDA but not held back by doctrine. The reason I ask is, you spew Protestant as if it is a bad thing. With that in mind unless you are Catholic you are a Protestant.

Europe - Cradle of Christianity, but now ...

Christianity germinated in Israel, and the apostle Paul travelled west to Ephesus, Corinth and Rome to plant the early churches. Gradually Christianity spread to rest of medieval Europe, and later, the Reformation and other significant movements took place.

How is Christianity in Europe today? I live in Singapore, and consistently hear from native European expats that most people in Europe do not believe or go to church. Why has it come to this?

Ironically, Europe is doing the work of Jesus more than the rest of the world even if they seem to have abandoned the faith.

Their nations serve the poor and consequently in some member nations, poverty is absent among citizens.

In many other nations, they serve the rich at the cost of the poor and poverty and corruption is endemic.

If you read Matthew 25:31-46, it would appear that Europe might be in good standing with the Lord than nations who may appear very devout in the Christian religion but showing little care to the poor and even supporting the very corrupt systems oppressing the poor.

That’s fine. But maybe you could just explain how that relates to my post. I don't mean to be dull but either way, yes, apart from Him we can do nothing and with Him all things are possible. He can break through our stubborn hearts- and even this world around us-replete with both good and evil- is structured so as to impress upon us our need, our lack, when the Master's effectively gone away. Humanity is a very needy group and we're here to realize just how deprived and depraved we are-apart from Him. Adam sought complete autonomy. What do we lose with that?
You did not mention it

Does "equality" even matter to Jesus?

But for me, the sentiment of Love your neighbor as yourself would infer equality. Another thought that comes to mind is that Jesus said to sell all your possessions and give to the poor and you will have riches in heaven.
Love your neighbor as yourself would infer equality??
You mixed up Christian charity with equality, which got not a lot to do with each other.
In fact it's because there are inequalities that we learn to love each other, and have opportunities to show our love towards each other.
Equality reduces opportunities to help each other (and freedom).

What do you mean “ lack of salvation”? The term “lack of salvation” raises the question of whether an individual is saved or not, or justified in the eyes of God or not. It also prompts consideration of whether salvation is granted as a gift or as a reward. Is salvation is something earned through a lifetime of faithfulness, or we receive it upon acceptance of Christ?
Salvation is release from the bondage of sin through Christ now and eternal life in Heaven after Jesus comes. If one is not taking part of the life in Christ now, they will not have the one through eternity then.

i didn't quite align with their beliefs and it was giving more 'Cult' then church.

Welcome! What's their beliefs in particular that didn't align with yours?

I was Evangelical and Pentecostal as well and now, no denomination. Still on the lookout for a church. Ironically, on Sundays, I hang out with a group of skaters who does humanitarian work. I feel closer to the Lord hanging out with the group than going to church.

The Law of God

what is John 7:23 referencing?

the NT doesn't use terminology to isolate the 10. the law of Moses is used in the NT as well as just "the law" but never to isolate the 10, rather to reference the whole law (torah). So why protest this so much? What is your motivation?
John 7:23 does not prove your point my friend. Nor is it a direct rebuttal to her post. SB can show you that. The protesting and motivation comes from the fact that an overwhelming majority of people who profess Christ are not keeping the Sabbath as God put forth and we are called to bring people back into our Creators arms because they are living in sin.

Have you understood this?

Surely you have heard of premillennialists, postmillennialists and amillennialists. Genuine believers in the Lord Jesus Christ have different understandings of the millennium.
But Revelation 20 reads plainly.
Thinking the future Millennium will happen any way other than as Written, is flat out heresy and an adding to the Book of Revelation.

I appreciate your comments, David, You do make a point, but how people can think we are in the Millennium now, beats me.
Plainly and logically, Jesus will Return and then reign over the world for the next thousand years. Proved by how we are now nearly 6000 years since Adam. The final tranche of 1000 years will be the Sabbath time for the earth and mankind.

Does "equality" even matter to Jesus?

Meaning sons of death, representing what leads us all to death since the Garden instead of representing the Kingdom which brings life.
I'm n not sure what you mean by ''sons of death, representing what leads us all to death". In Matt 23:15 Jesus describes the Scribes and Pharisees as "sons of hell". -

15 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel land and sea to win one proselyte, and when he is won, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.

And in John 8:44 He described them as the children of the devil. -

44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.

There is no equality with Jesus, He only spoke of two kinds of people, the children of the devil and Gods children.
