Normandt' meditations

203. Quality of people’s lives

Let’s meditate Paul’s reflection:

“Consider your own calling, brothers. Not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. Rather, God chose the foolish of the world to shame the wise, and God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong, and God chose the lowly and despised of the world, those who count for nothing, to reduce to nothing those who are something, so that no human being might boast before God. It is due to him that you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, as well as righteousness, sanctification, and redemption, so that, as it is written, ‘Whoever boasts, should boast in the Lord.’” 1 Corinthians, Chapter 1, verses 26 to 31

Paul seems to have understood how a person on a mission is. He doesn’t elaborate much and defines it in a few words: “foolish, weak, lowly, despised”. That’s what Paul thinks of us. It’s not very flattering. But it depends on the point of view of the person who receives it.

For the world, being foolish, weak, despised, it’s the equivalent of nailing us onto a cross. In their eyes, we’re poor.

But when we place our weaknesses in God, in what Paul says about us, becomes strength. For the strength doesn’t come from our pride, our know-how, our wisdom, but from God. We place our pride in God.

We are foolish to believe in a Crucified Messiah. We are despised to follow Jesus, we are weak to trust only in Jesus. We mention this from the beginning to give us an idea of the different types of poverty. For some people, poverty is wealth, for others wealth is poverty. But, in reality, there is real wealth and real poverty, and all humans stand between these two realities.

As we read this book, we’re invited to reflect on our different personal experiences of poverty and the different kinds of poverty we see around us. These discovered poverties we can give them to Jesus. We will be on a mission to help improve the quality of people’s lives.

Energy chief suggests Trump administration is altering previously published climate reports; staff for next iteration all fired already

Thanks. I have read the first two sections and will pick up more of it later. I'm refreshing my knowledge of the terminology as I haven't looked into climate modeling in a few years and my old training is, well, old.
You're welcome. Just keep in mind that the study is fourteen years old, with (hopefully) different models now.

Here's another that I'll toss out with the "Dubious" label: came across some late 20th Century claims that min/max temperature itself is a random walk, which doesn't quite ring true to me unless they're talking about it like a drunk staggering to a light pole: He might be all over the street getting there, but he does get there. Have not read them; just don't be surprised if you come across it.

That wouldn't be hard.

Spanish Inquisiton

Another member expressed a desire to discuss the inquisition. That is a broad topic spanning hundreds of years. I will limit this thread to the most notorious of the Inquisitions, the Spanish Inquisition. This is a sore subject with the potential for elevated emotions. I want to limit the discussion to facts, not accusations.

If a post is made with an accusation that is not backed up by facts, I ask the moderators to remove the post, yet not give any penalty to the poster. If an accusation is made backed up by facts, not hearsay, then I ask the moderators to allow us to discuss it.

Hearsay is a legal term for just repeating what someone else had said. Such a post would something like I read this guy said this about the inquisition or I believe this about the inquisition
I will ask what are your sources? And we can evaluate them.

What I have found was that the inquisition was aimed at those that falsely claimed to be Catholic, yet retained their old religion and were seeking to subvert the Church. It was not aimed at those that professed to be Jews, Moslems or Protestants, only those that attempted to infiltrate the Church through falsehood.

Here is what I found so far:

The Spanish Inquisition, established in 1478, was a religious tribunal aimed at combating heresy within the Catholic Church, primarily targeting individuals suspected of practicing crypto-Judaism (secretly practicing Judaism while outwardly converting to Catholicism), and to a lesser extent, other forms of religious deviation; while often associated with extreme brutality and torture, modern research indicates that while executions did occur, the number was likely significantly lower than popular perception, with the majority of cases resulting in fines or public penance, and the Inquisition's focus was more on surveillance and social control than widespread persecution of the general population.

Key points about the Spanish Inquisition:
  • Focus on Crypto-Jews:
The primary target of the Inquisition was "conversos," individuals of Jewish descent who had nominally converted to Catholicism but were suspected of still practicing Jewish rituals in secret.

  • Secret Denunciations:
Accusations against individuals were often made anonymously, which contributed to a climate of fear and suspicion.

  • Complex Trial Process:
Trials involved lengthy interrogations, sometimes including torture, to extract confessions, although the use of torture was supposed to be carefully regulated and was not always applied.

  • Penalties:
Depending on the severity of the offense, penalties could range from public penance, confiscation of property, exile, to execution by burning at the stake.

  • Social Impact:
The Inquisition had a significant impact on Spanish society, creating a climate of distrust and fear, particularly among "conversos" who were constantly under suspicion.

  • Exaggerated Popular Perception:
While the brutality of the Inquisition is often exaggerated in popular culture, it is important to note that the number of executions was likely much lower than commonly believed.

Important Considerations:
  • Historical Context:
The Inquisition emerged during a time of intense religious fervor and political instability in Europe, where the Catholic Church was actively trying to consolidate its power.

  • Varying Severity:
The intensity and methods of the Inquisition varied across different regions of Spain and over time.

  • Scholarly Debate:
Historians continue to debate the exact scope and impact of the Spanish Inquisition, with ongoing research examining the nuances of its practices and the experiences of those affected.

Just wanted to politely point something out: I read your post thoroughly and you said you ask moderators to delete posts that have no facts attached to them but that is exactly what you did - made a post with claims without any sources attached to it to verify them.

The mass

The Lutheran rite in its historic Latin form is so similiar to the traditional Latin mass that the music is basically interchangeable - indeed Bach is arguably more useful for purposes of the Tridentine mass than contemporary Lutheran worship since unfortunately Latin services in the Lutheran churches have become uncommon, except in a few places such as the Thomaskirche in Leipzig.

While supporting a vernacular liturgy, Martin Luther was not opposed to the continuation of the Latin liturgy, and the Lutheran Mass in Latin is basically a use of the Roman Rite.

This is particularly true in the case of those high church Lutherans such as the early Church of Sweden which disagreed with Martin Luther about the Canon, or anaphora, and did not remove it from the mass. I myself do not understand why Luther wanted to remove the canon other than it being some misguided attempt to push back against Roman Clericalism, which I would understand, but I still disagree with it. Indeed, the main area where I think the Anglican liturgy is superior to the early Lutheran liturgies is that it reformed and clarified the Eucharistic prayer and made it audible once more, as it had been in the Low Mass prior to the ninth century, so that the laity could be edified by it, and I feel this is the approach Luther should have taken.

This is also the approach the Ukrainian Lutherans take in their recension of the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, which nonetheless I feel cuts too much, and needlessly so, since there is very little in the ancient liturgy of Antioch that a Lutheran would have cause to object to.

There is even less in the ancient liturgy of Alexandria, which has two epiklesis, one of which is placed before the Words of Institution, like in the Roman Mass, which would avoid threatening the Western idea that the Words of Institution are what is consecratory.

It should be stressed on this point however that not all Eastern Christians will say that it is the epiklesis that is consecratory, by itself. Rather, going back to the fourth century, one will find Church Fathers who regard the entire Divine Liturgy as consecratory, which is why the Divine Liturgy is always celebrated with the Prothesis (the Liturgy of Preparation) and the Synaxis (the Liturgy of the Catechumens, also known as “The Liturgy of the Word”), followed by the Anaphora.

Indeed if one does not have a priest present, one can celebrate the Syanxis by itself, which is called a Typika service, which directly corresponds with the Anglican service of Antecommunion, and the Roman Missa Sicca or Missa Venatoris, or the various Protestant and Lutheran services, such as the one included in the 2006 Lutheran Service Book, which have the same scripture lessons as the Mass, but which do not have the Eucharist.

In Orthodoxy there are some cases where a Typika is required even if a priest is present, so there are a few different types of Typika Services - there are Reader Services, which can be celebrated by the laity with no clergy, not even a reader, contrary to what the name might suggest, and there are Typika services said by the clergy, which might be used, for example, on the morning of a day when a Vesperal Divine Liturgy will be celebrated, or was celebrated the night before, since Vesperal Divine Liturgies include Vespers, which marks the end of one liturgical day and the start of another, and in Orthodoxy, the rule is one liturgy per altar, per priest, per day. One common occasion for the use of a Typika is the morning of Christmas Eve.

At any rate I hope you enjoyed and found edifying this grand tour of Eastern and Western liturgical traditions. Please pray for me, because I had a nasty fall on Thursday morning, two atually, because I fell and hit my hand after falling and twisting my ankle, on some unstable crumbling asphalt, which resulted in very painful asphalt-smelling wounds to my hands, my knees and my elbow. I am not complaining, of course, because I am extremely thankful to Christ our True God and my guardian angel and our glorious Lady Theotokos for protecting me and ensuring that I did not hit my head and get conked out, or worse, or break anything, as those falls were nasty and could have been a lot worse. So I would ask everyone to pray that I continue to recover while joining me in thanking God, the Father, Son and Holy Ghost, and his Heavenly Host, especially my guardian angel, and the Theotokos and all the saints, for the fact that I was not more seriously injured.
Glad I am not a "Contemporary Lutheran".

AND THIS WHAT DEMONS SAY TO ALL !!

The one way to escape what Demons are teaching by man is to IMITATE. what the apostle Paul wrote

in Rom 16:25 and 26 and in 1 Tim 1 :4 to be in. the FAITH !!

Jesus gave us excellent examples of hypocrites in the N.T.

Why do US schools not allow the Bible to be taught ?

There are plenty of ways and opportunities to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Christian Nationalism indoctrination is just not one of them.
Thanks for sharing.
Bible stories in school = Christian National indoctrination?

Odd. The very last one I heard in school concerned King Belshazzar, Daniel, and the writing on the wall. The book of Daniel is from the Ketuvim of the Tanakh.

Can ChatGPT interpret speaking in tongues?

Of course it has always been a topic that concerns many. While some charismatics might seem errant, their fruits (both Catholic and Protestants) are hard to ignore. Most show growth rates, not declines and they are very active and have tremendous growth in missions.
Growth rates prove veracity? Islam seems to be growing faster than Christians in Ontario; following your logic, Islam is right. Church growth and right doctrine are often unrelated, however itchy ears hearing what they want to hear often results in growth above Churches that tell you what you need to hear.

Why do US schools not allow the Bible to be taught ?

I don't think that's what's behind the "Jews will not replace us" crowd.
In my limited experience, if one person intends to hate another because of race, they will look for any excuse to justify their hatred. If one doesn't work, they'll easily shift to another.

Is being single, and able to handle it, a blessing?

Wow. How have you managed that? I'm a very solitary person, but usually have some sort of brief interaction with someone. Like a clerk or someone I'm ordering food from.
I spent all my time indoors, and talk only when required.

No person can come to Christ by their own freewill !

A person comes to Christ only because the Father causes him to come to Christ,

Thats what in essence Jn 6:44 is saying, Similar to Psalm 65:4

4 Blessed is the man whom thou choosest, and causest to approach unto thee, that he may dwell in thy courts: we shall be satisfied with the goodness of thy house, even of thy holy temple.

Its a Covenant Blessing Ezk 36:27

27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.

The drawing of the Father in Jn 6:44 is His causing His Chosen People to believe in Christ ! 14

Multiple immigration sweeps reported across Los Angeles, with a tense standoff/protest downtown; SEIU union leader arrested

When he was taken into custody Friday morning, immigration agents tied his dog to a tree and then unclipped his collar, allowing the animal to run loose on Sepulveda Boulevard, according to the GoFundMe page.
Thats way worse than picking him up. Letting the dog run free? What kind of animals aee we dealing with here?

Questions and Answers

Since when did God make 7 year covenants? Plainly the treaty in Daniel 9:27, is not a covenant; it will be made between human entities.
keras - It is the confirmation cycle that is for 7 years. Not the Mt. Sinai covenant itself.

Daniel 9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

As the Israelites were about to cross the Jordan and possess the promised land, Moses in Deuteronomy 31:9-13, made a law that all future leaders of Israel would confirm the Mt. Sinai covenant on a 7 year cycle. As long as they dwelled in the land of Israel.

The confirmation process was to be a speech by the leader to the nation of Israel, from the place of God's choosing, that God gave the land of Israel to the children of Israel as theirs, forever.

I have asked the Jews (Judaism) where is the place of God's choosing, and they said the temple mount.

Of course such a speech has not been done in modern times because of the Muslim control on the temple mount would never allow it.

But after Gog/Magog, the Muslim control and presence on the temple mount will no longer exist. So the Antichrist, false messiah leader, is going to make the big speech from the temple mount.

I believe that ALL who ever lived will be in God’s Kingdom

i cant get around what your trying to say ... you say its put upon and then you say it is within ... so to clarify should all Gods children be obedient will this Satan of yours still exist ?
Satan will exist until God Himself puts him away permanently.

In the mean time, there is mean time.

There is time, singular. That would be Satan's time. Satan knows his time, singular, is short.

Then there are the TIMES of mankind in the generations, plural.

And there is A SINGULAR generation, that of the serpent vipers who have had one very long day here from the garden onward. They also have "a nation." And a city. All these things of "them" are unseen, because they exist in the spiritual arena. The arena that the prophets saw and spoke of by similitudes. They "saw" what these "things" look like behind the curtains of empirical reality.

Time/Times/the dividing or halving

That's how it's coming down

Trump Threatens Federal Takeover of Washington After Member of DOGE Is Assaulted

Yes, I saw his action. It wasn't wise to say the least. An Air Force Veteran and DOJ employee should know better. He was one man facing thirteen federal officers....on one street corner.
But the theatre continued:
The DC prosecutor charges him with a felony stating no will touch the police (or something to the effect).

Yeah he put on quite a show. Now he can do his little routine from behind bars.

Now hes a star in his own play. Good for him. No sympathy from me.
The judge rejected the charge as "excessive" over the weekend. The defended was released and ordered to appear in court at a later date....after the DOJ attornies were unable to argue he presented a threat to public safety...

Well, the judge should have kept his mouth shut. He doesn't get to make that claim yet as there has been no trial. If he wants the release that guy until the next hearing, fine. But no commentary.

Believers being bullied by other brothers and sisters in Christ.

I was thinking of two particular scriptures, and one fact of history, as I read your post.
The two scriptures are Acts 20:30, and1 John 2:19.
The historical fact is, schisms in Christianity has been ongoing from the first century, and has not reversed,

What do we learn from this?
I learned that when there are divisions in the congregation of God, it is either rectified immediately, as in the case of Acts 15:1-35, with follow up visits from overseers, to make sure the unity is maintained. Acts 15:36-41
Or, the division results in a breakaway on the part of the peacebreakers, because it is a work of Satan. 2 Thessalonians 2:3-12

Jesus referred to it as a sifting. Luke 22:31, where the unsuitable vessels fall through the holes, and the suitable remain. Matthew 13:47, 48; 1 Corinthians 3:10-15; 2 Timothy 2:20-22
The apostles referred to it as Satan gathering ministers to teach what appears to be truth, but is really watered down, demonic and tainted with lies doctrines. 2 Corinthians 11:12-15; 1 Timothy 4:1; 2 Timothy 4:3-5

So, those looking for some kind of revival, where these more than 45,000 denominations unite, perhaps they missed when that happened, and we have a warning to make sure we separate from what Satan has organized, because there can be no unity between Christ and Satan. 2 Corinthians 6:14-18

It just cannot happen. Just as oil and water can never mix.
I sense in Pauls writings especially that he was constantly worried about individuals and groups rising up to undermine the teachings he is often is reminding them of.

Like it was the same battle of the individual between the flesh and the spirit. Like the church itself is fighting the battle as a community and has to always be ready to defend itself from the wolves.

Even moreso today as I think in Pauls time they were clear because they did not allow the outside world to come into the church. But today for a growing number of churches its hard to tell the difference.

Thats why I think more than ever we need to be cautious. The problem is the idea of truth itself, that there is one unified truth is seen as controlling. So its a cultural wide shift into postmodernist thinking that has encroached on the church. That it is wrong to declare and stand on a single truth and this is oppressing others.

Which then makes those churches the bad guys and others the good guys. Thats why the church should have nothing to do with the same political games that are happening in mainstream society. Just stick to what they are to do best which is being Christlike. Helping the poor and being good examples in behaviour.

I believe that ALL who ever lived will be in God’s Kingdom

the only way to enter, is not to choose
Or so you think when not thinking.

You're just looking for another angle to climb over the wall of heaven when there are no such formulas.

The children of God are going through and the children of the devil are going to be left behind and sent to the fire at some point.

No child of the devil that we all bear regardless of choices, is making it past the gate.

God bound ALL to disobedience. Romans 11:32

We all have evil thoughts that defile us: Mark 7:21-23. Anyone who says this is not so does so in direct conflict with the Word of God and are therefore already captured by the chief of liars in their own MIND.

Not saying they won't be saved anyway. They just don't know and think by "not choosing" their mind is inactive when the fact is the evil conscience always reacts with evil and can do no other thing.

Trump Threatens Federal Takeover of Washington After Member of DOGE Is Assaulted

Biden never ran on or promised to release anything related to Epstein.
Irrelevant. He had the files and no one on the left was asking or demanding their release.
That was Trump who made that a campaign promise. The official story from the government that he killed had himself in his cell was always good enough for most people on the left. We’re not the ones obsessed with finding pedophiles lurking in our government. Remember, Epstein mysteriously dying in his cell was the supposed “cover up from the deep state” that Trump was promising his base he would expose.
When did he promise all that? I dont recall that. I remember someone asking him the question and said he would release the files as he had no problem with that.
This whole Epstein thing and the reason why the left is so adamant about pressing this button is because it is just about the clearest example of Trump LYING TO YOU, HIS SUPPORTERS
You I, as a supporter, am willing to acknowledge that perhaps there is something bigger at play here. I certainly didn't vote for him because he said he would release the files. Thats was at the bottom of the list if on the list. That goes for the vast majority of his voters.

And as far as Im concerned there could be some serious government reasons for not releasing this stuff that Trump wasn't fully aware of. I DON'T KNOW.

You are pressing the button because you seem to hate him. And if you are like other posters here you think its because he's covering for himself.

The fact Biden did not release the information leads me to believe Trump isn't involved and there is something else going on. But just like everything else, you guys are hell bent on making it all about Trump covering for himself.

Why does it not work? God is almighty. If He created the stars to be signs on the earth, what was to prevent Him from creating them with their light already reaching the earth? After all, light itself was created by God, according to Genesis.
You are using the God is omnipotent argument.
Can God make 2+2 = 5 or create a weight he cannot lift?
These are not atheist arguments but were raised by theologians over the centuries.

Given this absurd thread was put in a science forum it is refuted by science which states the night sky will be around 100x brighter than a naturally dark sky free of light pollution as described in post #16.

How did Jesus end the law without abolishing it?

Free will is a great responsibility. With it must come a free will choice to limit or place boundaries on the free will. Even God, who clearly has free will, placed boundaries and Limitations on His Own free will. He is a Just, and Merciful God. No one makes Him be Just and Merciful, He places these Limitation of His Own free will because HE knows free will that is unchecked will destroy any kingdom, even His Own.
Freewill is technically a Godless position.

Are you claiming the Will of God does not work within you? How are you then free, O servant of Him?

You're not. NOR does God "need" your freewill decisions in order to reward you, as if He is beholden to pony up with whatever you think you are due for your decisions or actions. That's simply not a depiction of any so called god, yet alone The God of all creation.

Fact is, nothing transpires apart from the Will of God:

Psalm 145:14
The Lord upholdeth all that fall, and raiseth up all those that be bowed down.

Hebrews 1:3
Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high:

By Himself, PURGED our sins. Himself. No one else will get a single spittle of credit for purging their own sins by their own so called freewill.

There is more to say about this freewill fallacy. But this alone should make anyone think things through, OR harden them even further to "uphold themselves." You see God also grants us our DELUSIONS and puts our FEARS upon us all:

Isaiah 66:4
I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spake, they did not hear: but they did evil before mine eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not.

There is an interesting phenomena that transpires when we engage/read His Words. IF we are a freewiller, we'll see freewill things. When we are determinist, we see determinist things. The more interesting parts are that both positions hold some truths, BUT none of these postures are apart from the over riding WILL OF THE LORD.

Imagine what a Divine Juggling Act looks like. IF freewill gave us that much power, I actually wouldn;t want it. It's far too complicated for me.

In the final analysis, God is all there is. He will BE ALL in ALL. 1 Cor. 15:28

And why not? Who can complain when Total Eternal Perfection is in charge? Why have it any other way? It's pointless.

So, no. God is not impressed with the moral choices of anyone. Fact also is any "moral choices" are still made with evil present within us all anyway. It's simply a no win game that we play to justify the entirety of ourselves before our Maker when such justifications really don't even exist and aren't in the cards.

We're both good and evil because GOD Himself made us that way. No sense lying about it or deceiving ourselves about it. Even less, thinking some other people are better than others because they made "good choices." It's just baloney all the way though.
We don't know enough to place limitation on our own free will, we must learn and be shown to freely accept limitations. This undeniable truth
Your "undeniable truth" doesn't exist. There is simply zero people that have the same freewill as God. Therefore every and any other will is categorically LESS THAN that free.

So how free is LESS THAN FREE?

It's not.

Nor are such "wills" free of God's Will anyway.

There are so many imaginations and fantasies in this category of theology it's hard to keep track of them all.

Here is a realistic look: There is not a person who will ever stand before us without evil present within them and the will of the tempter in operations within them also.

There was no such person as Eve, alone. There was no such person as Adam, alone.

Both of them were infected with the entrance of Satan into their hearts to STEAL from them the moment after God blessed them, according to Jesus anyway. Mark 4:15

From that point on, it's always been the person and the tempter, walking in the same pair of shoes, other than God Himself in the flesh.

There is a very clear line drawn between The Creator and the creation. Let's not mistake ourselves for God. He gave us part of His own self, but none of us can handle the WHOLE ENCHILADA nor are we meant to. That will always be reserved for Him Alone.
Many, who profess to know God, claim that "Evil" defiled Eve "From without", not from within, because they say God created her perfect, with no evil. But these men imply in their philosophy that the "ability" to chose Evil, is evil itself. That isn't true. There is something truly Holy about a person denying the lusts of their free will desires, (AKA Lusts of the flesh) and choose instead to freely adopt the limitations the Father Gave them, even when they might not understand them. Eve was created a perfect being with free will, like her creator. She was created with the ability to choose to obey and to choose to disobey. A talking snake, a false teacher, these are just tests to see, as Paul teaches, "Who we yield ourselves to obey".
We never do only evil or only good. That is simply another freewill fairy tale.

Whatever good we do, we do so with the presence of evil, an evil conscience, still within us all. And the tempter also retains his sway over us, in the flesh regardless.

So God is never just engaging just a person. He engages both the child of God AND the tempter or his own, as Jesus showed us on nearly every page of the Gospels.

Nobody slips by this setup based on their so called "good choices."

A good tree produces good fruit, and a bad tree produces either no or bad fruit.

And everyone produces BOTH, if they are honest.

Dishonest religious people have a hard time owning up to this fact or they have conjured up various formulas to "get around" the hard line facts of their bad or evil fruit.

Another "fact" of scripture is that we all have evil thoughts that defile us, Mark 7:21-23

But of course no one wants to sit in a pew and really HEAR about the fact that they are defiled, do they?

No, they'll all run out the door holding their hands over their ears, and maybe even gnash a tooth or 2

Trump Threatens Federal Takeover of Washington After Member of DOGE Is Assaulted

Reminds me of Arlo Guthrie in the film "Alice's Restaurant."

Hardened criminals in cell: "Whatcha in for, kid?
"Littering."

The narrative would have been bettter if they could have some rocks thrown, or riots or something. All they had was an idiot throwing a sandwich at a trooper.

But you do what you can, with what you have, I suppose. Maybe it was a footlong. That could be aggravated food fighting, maybe.
Well. I would agree rocks are more serious. Frozen water bottles would be bad too.

However nothing should be thrown at officers. Sandwich or not. And if you are an idiot throwing a sandwich at police then you are an idiot who can go to jail.

Oh noes he's reducing crime and blight in the nation's capitol. Let there be another mass tantrum, like there's been over a ballroom and a patio.
Don’t worry, we’ll get back to talking about the Epstein files in two weeks when Congress gets back into town.
