Police used tear gas to clear protesters from Lafayette park so Trump could take a photo at St. John's Church
  • Law enforcement in Washington, DC, fired tear gas and rubber bullets, and used shields, against peaceful protesters on Monday, according to reporters on the scene.
  • The attack, in front of St. John's Church near the White House, came at 6:30 p.m. local time just before President Donald Trump spoke at 6:44 p.m. in the Rose Garden. He later went to the church and was photographed holding a bible.
  • "There was no warning. The crowd was entirely peaceful," Jackson Proskow, Washington Bureau Chief for the Canadian outlet Global News, posted on Twitter. "Trump had police move in with tear gas and horses so he could stage a photo op outside a church across the street."

The problem is LE and NG can’t tell who is peaceful and who are violent actors. You think they should have waited until it got violent to disperse the crowd? I thought Lafayette park was closed due to Coronavirus.

Just 12 hours before 50 USSS officers were injured. So don’t know tulc. Maybe all the peaceful protesters we hear of should coordinate with the local government to demonstrate in an area where the police can protect them from the violent actors. Why don’t they do that. Many places in Texas the police provided escort for demonstrators marching. Like in Dallas in I think 2016 but it got violent when a lone sniper killed cops.

Just before this happened the President said that he was the “friend” of peaceful protesters. He is obviously a liar since he then used tear gas to clear peaceful protesters from the park just so he could have a photo op. I don’t understand how people can support this man.

Sadly a number of Episcopalian bishops are more interested in playing politics than in spreading the Gospel.
I didn’t hear a bishop “playing politics” in the news reports.

She also mentioned something about the Bible. Which probably are not in the pews in that church.
So? They aren’t in the pews at my church. Are churches somehow better if there are Bibles in the pews?

According to a pool report, the area near St. John's Church, which is across from Lafayette Square, was still thick with gas when the press arrived ahead of the president's walk there from the Rose Garden, prompting "coughing and choking."

An incredible pool report from @kadiagoba. Tear gas in the air choking those who accompanied President Trump as he headed to his church visit.

I watched this speech and the walk on while switching to different networks, and I didn't see one person in the pool or otherwise coughing and choking. I did see them running after him as he walked to the church, and it's amazing how they do that while coughing and choking. (eye rolls)

I'm fine with them criticizing the walk - that's their option. Do it if you feel you must. Yet, it's the reporters on the ground among the mobs that are suffering the tear gas, etc. Not them.

If they were coughing? Chances are they were out of shape while running after the President while yelling questions at him while they were all walking/running. Talk about drama queens!

Absolutely.
And you are entitled to your opinion. I guess you must attend one of those "better churches." I guess that makes me a lesser Christian.

Baloney.

What an odd response. Someone is entitled to their opinion. Correct.

Such you disagree with their opinion you accuse them of viewing you as a lesser Christian.

That's quite a leap.

It's not personal. It's the Berean approach:

Acts 17: NASB

10The brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews. 11Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.

What I think is President Trump should have stayed in his bunker, whining about "needing to dominate" instead of using tear gas and rubber bullets on people just so he could get a photo/op in front of a church holding a bible. :sigh:

Thank you tulc! Trump said the he was the friend of peaceful protesters. So, what did he then do to his friends? He had them tear gassed.

I don't want to get this thread off track. But this doesn't say that Scriptures need to be in the pews. We have Bibles all through my church, just not in the pews. But of course I apparently don't attend a "better church" like you. Baloney.

If you want to further discuss this please start another thread as I don't want to take this further off topic and I will not respond here to further posts on this.

She also mentioned something about the Bible. Which probably are not in the pews in that church.

Look, in fairness it is none of my business how to run the United States of America. Clearly however I am not without concern for my brothers and sisters in humanity in troubled times.

As an observer I have come to the conclusion that the 45th POTUS is very concerned about 'optics'. The photo opportunity (and I use the term loosely because it was significantly a manufactured opportunity) of DJT standing outside a boarded up St John's Washington holding a well read Bible in the air to create the image of the leader who stands for all that is honourable and true. The vast amount of footage of the various brands of US Law Enforcement using stun bombs, teargas, mounted police, and sheer storm trooper enforcement to push back the protesters is to be ignored.

Should George Floyd be breathing today? Yes. Why isn't he. Because 4 Law Enforcement personnel exceeded their mandate, in a way that repulsed most reasonable people in the world. The streets of the USA today are telling us that it is time to address the issues. More Force will not fix the problem. Domination won't fix the problem.

The 35th President of the United States said, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” and whilst he misattributed the source, the truth holds.

Things that will help fix the problem include, love, listening and respect for each other.

Justice is not about brutal enforcement of the rule of law. Justice is about fairness, and that includes equitable distribution of the communities resources, equitable access to justice, education, and the right to be heard.

The UN Declaration on Human Rights, which the wife of the 32nd President of the United stands had a major hand in is worth reading. Here are the first 10.

Article 1.
All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.
Article 2.
Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. Furthermore, no distinction shall be made on the basis of the political, jurisdictional or international status of the country or territory to which a person belongs, whether it be independent, trust, non-self-governing or under any other limitation of sovereignty.
Article 3.
Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.
Article 4.
No one shall be held in slavery or servitude; slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms.
Article 5.
No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.
Article 6.
Everyone has the right to recognition everywhere as a person before the law.
Article 7.
All are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the law. All are entitled to equal protection against any discrimination in violation of this Declaration and against any incitement to such discrimination.
Article 8.
Everyone has the right to an effective remedy by the competent national tribunals for acts violating the fundamental rights granted him by the constitution or by law.
Article 9.
No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile.
Article 10.
Everyone is entitled in full equality to a fair and public hearing by an independent and impartial tribunal, in the determination of his rights and obligations and of any criminal charge against him.

We live in challenging times. Let us ray that we may know peace in our time.
