  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

To know that the men who took Officer Gibson’s life will walk free...
They pled guilty to the murder knowing that they would face the death sentence if they had pled innocent. Despite that they were found innocent.

From here: They Were Acquitted But Sentenced to Life Anyway. Now, They’re Finally Free..

'...federal judge Robert Payne sentenced Richardson and Claiborne to life in prison using “acquitted conduct sentencing,” a legal mechanism that allows judges to sentence defendants based on charges for which they were not convicted...'

Just...what? You could sentence people for crimes they didn't commit? Does that make any sense at all? If anyone deserved a pardon it was those two. Was that your best example?

Zohran Mamdani’s Real-World Constraints

Proponents: "It would've been great had those other entities not interfered and prevented him from doing all he wanted to do"
Very true. Everytime something like this fails that seems to be rhe response. It just wasn't done correctly, seems to be a typical response. I'm really hoping no one in NY interferes with him. The City Council may just go along. If he is voted in, that would say there are a LOT of people supporting him and those people probably won't support any councilman who refuses to go along. I hope enough pressure is put on them to just buckle under. Quite frankly I'm tired of hearing how these ideas would work if just done correctly and how good they are for everyone. Then when they dont work some sort of excuse like you mentioned is used.
Per my notes in another thread, the only thing that makes NYC a little more fragile/volatile than other cities, is that's it's the de facto seat of an entire major financial sector in the US, so negative effects could potentially be felt by people other than New Yorkers.
You are probably correct, but I'm willing to deal with that in order to put this to bed. Although I'm skeptical rhat it will, because there are too many who will refuse to see the failure should it fail. Which, obviously I think it will. Becauae America is not really set up for this type of action. But let's let NYC be the guinea pig. If it succeeds then fine, let's make the changes everywhere because it will be good for everyone.

Zeal for Your House

The house of the Lord is the temple of God, which is the body of Christ, which is comprised of those who have trusted in Jesus Christ to be Lord and Savior of their lives. It is not a building, and it is not a human organization, nor a church denomination, nor is it a not-for-profit corporation of (union, merger with) the federal government of the USA, or of any other country.

[Matthew 21:12-13; John 2:13-17; Acts 5:27-32; 1 Corinthians 1:10-13; 1 Corinthians 3:1-9; 2 Corinthians 6:14-18; Philippians 3:18-19; Revelation 2:1-29; Revelation 3:1-22; Revelation 13:5-8; Revelation 18:1-5]

The church is a living organism with Christ as her head. And the sanctuary of God is within the lives of Christ’s followers. God does not dwell in buildings built by human hands. Thus, when we enter into a building called “church,” we are NOT entering God’s house nor have we suddenly walked into the presence of God, because God’s presence lives within us who obey him, and he is always with us. And we, the people of God, are the Lord’s house.

So, if zeal for the Lord’s house consumes us, it means that passion and fervor for Christ and for his church, his body, so fills up our lives to where we are fully engaged (involved) and committed to the Lord’s service and to ministering to the needs of his body, the people of God. And we are committed to serving and to ministering to and exhorting and encouraging one another in our walks of faith and in obedience to our Lord in holy living.

It also means that we are fully involved and committed to our personal relationships with Christ, to our times of personal worship with him, to dying to sin, and to obedience to his commands. We are fully dedicated to walking in the Spirit, and not according to the flesh, and to allowing the Lord to use us in other people’s lives according to his will and purposes for our lives.

As well, it means that we feel what God feels, we hate what he hates, and what he loves we love. We weep over all the junk that is presently going on in the world and in the worldly church in the name of God, and in the name of Jesus Christ. So, we expose these fruitless deeds of darkness so that other believers are not led astray to what is false. And we pray for revival!

[Matthew 5:13-16; Matthew 28:18-20; John 4:31-38; John 13:13-17; John 14:12; Acts 1:8; Acts 2:14-18,42-47; Acts 26:18; Romans 10:14-15; Romans 12:1-8; 1 Corinthians 12:1-31; 1 Corinthians 14:1-5; Galatians 6:1; Ephesians 2:8-10; Ephesians 4:1-16; Ephesians 5:11-21; Ephesians 6:10-20; Philippians 2:1-8; Colossians 3:12-16; Titus 2:11-14; Hebrews 3:13; Hebrews 10:23-25; James 5:19-20; 1 Peter 2:9,21; 1 John 2:6]

Zeal for Your House

Based off John 2:17; Psalms 69:9
An Original Work / August 1, 2016
Christ’s Free Servant, Sue J Love

Zeal for Your house, it consumes me.
Lord, I love my times with You.
I love to worship You and sing Your praises.
Time in Your Word brings me closer to You,
List’ning to You speaking to me,
Gently guiding me in truth.

Lord, You are my life’s example,
Showing me how I should live.
I love to walk with You where’er You lead me.
No greater joy have I when serving You.
Loving, giving, resting in Your strength,
I’m yielding to Your will.

Zeal for Your house, it consumes me.
See the church turned upside down:
Marketing ventures taking place of worship,
Men of the gospel turning into clowns.
Gospel message made appealing,
So the world will feel at home.

Lord, we need a great revival.
Turn their hearts, Lord, back to You.
Open the blind eyes, turn them all from darkness,
Lord, to the light. May they return to You,
Turn from their sin, forsake idols,
Be restored to God again.

Attitudes towards Tertullian and Origen

heretics break because they preach a different Christ. schismatics break due to admin differences. you can be both but schism is worse.

Indeed, and the tragedy is that Tertullian, in joining a schismatic sect that was also heretical, managed to tick both boxes. It would be a bit like if a Roman Catholic joined the Palmarians (a neo-Collyriidan schismatic cult headquartered in Spain with its own Pope, that completely rewrote the BIble, among other heretical acts, but which is also schismatic).

Biden used his final weeks as commander-in-chief to grant clemency and pardon more than 1,500 individuals, in what his White House described as the largest single-day act of clemency by a U.S. president.

Attitudes towards Tertullian and Origen

Yikes! I have his book about universal salvation, but haven't read it yet. I hear his writing style isn't that great.

I like his writing style; and I liked his book The Atheist Delusion, a response to the pretentious attack Dawkins made against religion. The tragedy is that DBH has embraced dual heresies.

The Lutheran Hail Mary and the Orthodox Angelic Salutation

The pre-Reformation Hail Mary in the Latin West was similar to the Orthodox version, "Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you...". "Pray for us sinners" was added after the Reformation.

That’s not fully correct, at least not from the Eastern side of the equation. I don’t know when in the West “pray for us sinners” was added, but I agree with it, for reasons I shall explain pertaining to the history of the Eastern prayer:

The oldest Marian prayer did feature an intercession, as did most Orthodox Theotokia, however, the specific Orthodox theotokion that people tend to call the “Orthodox Hail Mary”, which technically, it isn’t, because we have lots of Theotokia, the Angelic Salutation, is basically what Martin Luther was using. However describing that as “the Orthodox version” is grossly misleading, because the Angelica Salutation is one of a great many hymns that we had, also including the Akathist, an intercessory Kontakion to the Theotokos, and many Theotokia and Stavrotheotokia hymns, and many more in use by the Oriental Orthodox, which more closely resemble the version with the intercession, that speaking of a singular Orthodox analogue to the Hail Mary is simply wrong.

Rather, my entire point in this thread was to show that Martin Luther’s version of the Ave Maria resembles the Angelic Salutation, which is about 900-1200 years old, but is derived from the ancient hymn Sub Tuum Principe, which has been in continual use in the Eastern churches since time immemorial, and which was rediscovered by the West by an excited Roman Catholic Church in the 18th century, which immediately attached a plenary indulgence to it (as they found it in a third century manuscript). Sub Tuum Principe, the oldest hymn in ths genre, and the oldest one in continual use, does in fact feature an intercession.

Thus, the version prayed by Martin Luther is an authentic Orthodox devotion, but as far as its history in the West before the Reformation, I don’t know, however, Lutherans are correct to highlight this is an Orthodox prayer. Conversely, the oldest version, the grandfather of all devotions to the Theotokos, Sub Tuum Principe, from the third century, and also most other Orthodox hymns to the Blessed Virgin Mary, do contain intercessions.

Thus I do wish our Lutheran friends would open themselves up to intercessory prayer to the Theotokos, but conversely I am glad that they venerate her using the Angelic Salutation, which is one of many magnificent Orthodox hymns of veneration, and venerating the Theotokos is extremely important, and what the Confessional Lutherans offer to Orthodoxy is a church which is dogmatically consistent with us on nearly all points, except for a few minor issues. We recently persuaded the Lutheran World Federation to drop the filioque, but this seems a hollow victory given that they are so far out of alignment with us on issues of human sexuality, the dignity of the human person due to the Incarnation of Christ (e.g. the Orthodox opposition to abortion and cremation) and other issues, that it might not have a positive effect, just as the use of Orthodox icons by Anglicans has not stopped the sad decline of the Church of England into dogmatic confusion or the schism that has now completely bifurcated the Anglican Communion.

We Eastern and Oriental Orthodox merely need to be patient with the Confessional Orthodox and start an active dialogue with them, because frankly they are much more important to us as a strategic partner than any other Western church aside from some of the Continuing Anglican churches and those of the Global South, the trick being to ensure we avoid any confessional Lutherans that are influenced by Pietism, and avoid any Anglican communities influenced by Latitudinarianism (which combined with the Bolshevik revolution to cause the attempted communion between the Protestant Episcopal Church of the US and the Russian Orthodox Church in North America to fall apart, since the discovery of the Orthodox of the Low Church side of the Episcopal Church slowed things down just enough, to that by the time things had sped back up shortly before the repose of St. Rafael Hawaheeny of Brooklyn, it was 1915 and the collapse of Imperial Russia and the rise of the Bolshevik oppressors just two years away.
