  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The 2025 Government Shutdown Thread

Are their family and friends illegals or otherwise ineligible? If not they have nothing to be concerned about.
The health care cuts are not just for legal immigrants who work enough to qualify for Obamacare subsidies. The premiums Trump is cutting are for all Americans who use those health care subsidies. And yes, I do know poeple that are on those plans. I can understand though that those with employer health insurance may not want to help others get such benefits. That instead some prefer larger tax cuts for the wealthy, or other government options.

War Secretary Hegseth orders rare, urgent meeting of hundreds of generals, admirals Sep 30 in Virginia

It also diminishes what they consider their primary mission, the "enemy without."
...
What Trump really wants--and what he was actually saying--is that he intends the military to be a Federal Internal Security Force.

It's from a piece of fiction (Battlestar Galactica), but this quote always sticks with me:

"There's a reason you separate military and the police. One fights the enemies of the state, the other serves and protects the people. When the military becomes both, then the enemies of the state tend to become the people".

How to Respond to the Cross-Dressing Man at Mass? DIFFICULT MORAL QUESTIONS: What we do and what we tolerate both witness to what we believe.

There is no sin, that I am aware of, in cross dressing.

This pearl clutching stuff HAS to stop.
It's a sin because it's a sexual fetish, deviant.
The "pearl clutching" phrase is so passé, BTW.

The 2025 Government Shutdown Thread

???

So, it is extortion to do what every Democratic president has done, to have a bill to continue the government with no changes to the current budget.
To judge I think we wold need more specifics. But yes in general both sides use tactics that are undesireable. I suppose in this case the American voters will decide. However, in a government shutdown, some Americans will suffer more than others, depending on what their needs might be. Always better to not be dependent on the government anyway, but there are times when it is unavoidable.

Has Kirk's Death Prompted You?

As if the Left leaning leaders through the years haven't been vindictive while throwing fuel on the fire of most topics in DC
You guys really circle the wagons, don’t you. Totally incapable of self critical reflection. I do not defend Democrats!

Republican Candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Virginia Caught in Tumblr Nazi Porn Scandal

You may recall the Nazi porn scandal that plagued the Republican lieutenant governor of North Carolina last September. For the second year in a row, the cooler months have ushered in a Republican Nazi porn scandal, this time beleaguering a candidate for lieutenant governor in Virginia.

Republican nominee John Reid faces fresh scrutiny surrounding a Tumblr blog, allegedly linked to him, that contained pornographic content. Reid denies ownership of the profile, which has the same username as other social media accounts of his: “JRDeux.”

On Wednesday, American Journal News unearthed additional details about the “JRDeux” Tumblr profile. In October 2015, the blog reposted an image of “a male college student in underwear,” which was published by a Nazi fetish account with a racial slur in its username; it contained the phrase “obedient [n-word].”

The user described himself as a “subservient [n-word] who knows his place in society” and who was seeking “superior white men” in the Washington, D.C., area.

According to Reid, the whole story was concocted to smear his sexuality.

[However, these posts, which are archived in the Internet Archive, come from as early as 2014, when he was not in politics, but a media consultant/newsreader.]

NYT report: In 2019, President Trump ordered Navy SEAL mission into North Korea; mission failed, left unarmed North Koreans dead

There have been many secret operations into foreign countries under numerous administrations that do not immediately make the news. In fact there was a whole secret war in Laos through Democrat and Republican administrations. While Nixon announced all of the POWs were on their way home in early 1973, at that time the Pathet Lao did not release even one American POW. In early 1973 the U.S. was still flying secret missions into Laos and lost more men there. Additionally there was a secret mission into Laos in 1981. It may take decades for classified missions to be revealed, on occasion officials think it is best to reveal the missions right away. As to Carter and the hostage rescue attempt, Carter took a hit politically when it came out the U.S. had refused Israeli help for advice on the mission, Israel used special air filters on desert helicopters to keep out the sand.
Yes, you are absolutely right. I am ok with the missions but when things go south on them, killing civilians is something I hope we try to avoid. I don't know the risks, but maybe just taking their radio and disabling their engines would have been a better alternative? Maybe have some korean call it in as a tip a day later? Of course no one knows all the details, so i can't judge what options there may or may not have been. Keeping it secret too as long as possible does seem to be the best policy as long as the mission is on the up and up on the USA side.

Trump Calls For Ilhan Omar’s Removal From Congress

I provide quote from Omar, but still claim i have provided no evidence.
No, you provided what was a translation of a speech she made which was incorrect. Intentionally so. And you have been given evidence to show that that is the case. Someone lied to you. The only evidence you have presented in repeating it is the evidence that you didn't spend any time checking it yourself.

Now you have been given the actual evidence you have no reason to repeat the lie you were told. In fact, you have every reason to go back and correct your post now that you know the truth.

Trump suggests he’ll release Jeffrey Epstein ‘client list’ if elected: ‘I’d have no problem with it’

marist poll

Most Americans want the Epstein files released. 77% want all of the files released with the victims’ names removed, and 13% want some of the files released with all of the victims’ names removed. Only 9% do not want any of the files released.

84% of Democrats, 67% of Republicans, and 83% of independents want all of the files released.

And there is one person who absolutely doesn't want them released, and he literally trumps all those who do.

Hell doesn't exist and there is no eternal suffering, instead bad peolle just cease to exist

You do realize that verse and those above it are not talking about Satan and his devils right? They are talking about those that take the mark and worship the beast.
What makes you think it's not the devil and his messengers?

Either of us can take Rev. 14:8 and march it directly over to Rev. 18:2 and figure out exactly to WHOM "they" refer to, who are being tormented

And once again, Christ is very clear about the second death. And I will certainly take his word over yours.

Once the Lake of Fire has served it's purpose it will cease to exist. It will be a "former thing" and afterwards Christ will make all things new.
I've said many times I have no issues with either the permanent termination of the devil and his messengers or their permanent setting aside in the LoF.

For your loved ones, family and neighbors who don't happen to believe like you having the same fate? Not a chance I'd buy that story when there is such an OBVIOUS enemy to observe that is not them, who also happened to be OUR CAPTOR too, prior to. Eph. 2:2

Morality without Absolute Morality

Of course upbringing affects what moral systems you’re exposed to - but it doesn’t make those systems true or false.
That wasn't the point that was being discussed. It was what are the factors that determine your reasons for holding to a specific moral position (whether it is true or false). So upbringing (in Thailand or the US?) and age (18 or 80?) and religion (Bhuddism or Christianity?) will all have an influence. You denied that earlier. But they are obviously factors. Including very many more.
Furthermore despite radically different upbringings, there are moral constants (prohibitions of murder, theft, betrayal of trust) across cultures. Moral truths are grasped by human reason or conscience independently of upbringing.
I think what you have shown is that there are commonalities across societies. I have no problem in agreeing with that. Just bear in mind that just because everyone agrees on a moral problem position does not make it absolute. We don't decide on what absolute morality is by having a vote.

Emergency abortion denials by Catholic hospitals put woman in danger, after her water broke at 17 weeks, lawsuit claims

With much hesitation I get involved in this thread...

If she had trouble getting the hospital to perform an abortion the first time, you'd think she would go to another hospital that would handle the situation. Once again, a poster is trying to unsuccessfully show that a religious person or institute is some kind of hypocrite. Practically everybody knows that most Catholic (and Protestant) hospitals do not perform abortions so why test one's fate? Yes, the hospital looks like a piece of trash to most of you for not doing the abortion but sorry, they don't do abortions. And hopefully, they will drop California as a place to practice because of all the hostility the California government puts on people who are anti-abortion/pro-life. And you can twist the words all you want - the hospital is still a Pro-Life Sanctuary.

Focusing on just the last sentence in this statement: Christians (TM) like to throw around the pro-life catch phrase like it makes them better and more holy than everyone else. In other words, if you are against abortion no matter what the circumstances, that is the mark of a true Christian.

I am very strongly pro-life (even stronger than you in my actions, I imagine) - but the notion that denying life saving medical care in circumstances such as these is good and holy is utter nonsense. Instead of viewing the situation for what it is and approaching it with humility and understanding, you approach it with (apparent) haughtiness, apathy, and indifference. Proclaiming a Catholic hospital to be a "pro-life sanctuary" when such a case is presented is a perfect example of that.

I'm very much in favor of protecting unborn life. But when you approach it with legalism and an obvious desire for moral superiority, it ceases to be the holy and righteous thing which you are proclaiming it to be.

The 2025 Government Shutdown Thread

Should? OK, a fine opinion.

And we'll see where we are on Nov 1 when we are month into the shutdown.

Trump will focus as much marm as he can to Democratic states and districts and do some favorable things for Republican states.

As I said, we can discuss this again in November after senators have heard from their constiuants.
I am not saying this is your personal attitude, and hopefully not any Christians, but on the idea as a whole: Do we want Trump to harm democratic cities and states? I don't because then GOP places will be targeted even more from Democrats in the future. Plus even democrats were enemies, (which they are not) shouldn't we love them, and try to go out of our way to work with them? This current tone also is quite toxic. It creates divisions and hate. Yes, we can see some things from elections, but whoever wins and loses the best posture is to work to satisfy all Americans.

Consider America's first policies. Won't the first be last? Does it promote America abroad or are we now increasingly being seen as enemies, where some people are now going out of their way to avoid our products?

Trump Calls For Ilhan Omar’s Removal From Congress

We can all see what your posts say. They repeated lies told by Trump and others. You have no evidence to back up what you said because there is none available. I'm not heading off into the semantic weeds so you can avoid having to adress that fact.
I provide quote from Omar, but still claim i have provided no evidence.

Hell doesn't exist and there is no eternal suffering, instead bad peolle just cease to exist

The issue is relying on out of context verses to make a theology.
As opposed to your methodology using verses to eliminate ALL the multiple verses that don't fit your position?
Take 1 John 4:7 for example. Look at what comes after:
What makes you think the statement of 1 John 4:7 is eliminated by what comes after?
Only those that confess Jesus is the Son of God remain in God’s love.

What makes you think you can draw a line between God and Love? You think Love requires some contrived doctrine attached to make Love valid? I don't think so.
lol I hold no formulas and me, a tiny created being, can never make an infinite being contingent. Think about what you are saying. This is an emotional fallacy.
Tiny created you just make the God of all creation completely worthless for anyone unless "that tiny little person" makes God valid. It's kind of an absurd claim, don't you think? I'd much rather say people can NOT believe unless the God of all creation lets them. But I know that's not the eternal case either. Once people are removed out from under their captor, the DEVIL, then all will believe. Some see sooner is all. Don't ask me why. Wasn't my call.

No one has an excuse.
So, just to be clear, everyone born prior to Christ, everyone who never heard the Gospel, all mentally challenged people, and hey, maybe toss in the kids in for the eternal torch. You're writing all these off?

Do we have to revisit enemies of the Gospel being saved in Romans 11:26-32?
The Bible CLEARLY teaches that faith is necessary for salvation. There is no wiggle room here but God does as He wills.

Trying to play it both ways above doesn't work.

I've cited 1 John 4:7 showing everyone who loves knows God and is born of God. I've even asked you if you have ever actually felt that warmth in your own heart when loving someone or doing good acts. I think it's universal to every person who's ever lived. I've cited Romans 11:26-32 showing even enemies of the Gospel being saved. I've cited Jesus being the Savior of the world, state multiple places in scripture. I've even cited FAITH works through LOVE which means anyone who LOVES has FAITH, Gal. 5:6. Yet you insist on some specific methodology to eliminate all of these things, as if God can only be moved via recitation of some 1 - 4 step specific recitation like some form of magic formula, but only if you really believe in that magic formula.
The difference is that those in Christ have been justified and cleansed of all sin through Christ sacrifice while those that are not in Christ remain in their sins. Big difference here.

Well, if you think you're sinless that's a whole nuther can O heretic worms.

The 2025 Government Shutdown Thread

Prove it false!
One of the bones of contention is that the ACA subsidies are being removed, which will cause some people's insurance costs to skyrocket. Ultimately many will lose medical insurance if they can't or won't pay that increase out of pocket.

It has nothing to do with citizenship status.

ACA Marketplace Premium Payments Would More than Double on Average Next Year if Enhanced Premium Tax Credits Expire

In other words, expiration of the enhanced premium tax credits is estimated to more than double what subsidized enrollees currently pay annually for premiums—a 114% increase from an average of $888 in 2025 to $1,904 in 2026.

Live jam

I was wondering if there was a way where muso's can jam live over the internet. Like Zoom and other conferencing Apps.

Not sure if there are newer versions especially for music as I know apps like Zoom can lag.

But it would be great if this was the case and we could setup something along those lines. THis would be great for say either a ad lib jam session between a few or for getting collaborations ect.

I say this partly because I am looking for a jam or group that gets together especially for guitarists. But I also enough any instrument in a jam. I use to jam but have moved to a new area and am a bit disabled nowadays.

Still I volunteer at a local homeless hub and started a music group as I notices a lot of people played guitar or loved guitars and music. So I am eager to recreate this kind of group or opportunity as I think music is a good therapy.
