  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

One of the bones of contention is that the ACA subsidies are being removed, which will cause some people's insurance costs to skyrocket. Ultimately many will lose medical insurance if they can't or won't pay that increase out of pocket.

It has nothing to do with citizenship status.

ACA Marketplace Premium Payments Would More than Double on Average Next Year if Enhanced Premium Tax Credits Expire

In other words, expiration of the enhanced premium tax credits is estimated to more than double what subsidized enrollees currently pay annually for premiums—a 114% increase from an average of $888 in 2025 to $1,904 in 2026.

Should? OK, a fine opinion.

And we'll see where we are on Nov 1 when we are month into the shutdown.

Trump will focus as much marm as he can to Democratic states and districts and do some favorable things for Republican states.

As I said, we can discuss this again in November after senators have heard from their constiuants.
I am not saying this is your personal attitude, and hopefully not any Christians, but on the idea as a whole: Do we want Trump to harm democratic cities and states? I don't because then GOP places will be targeted even more from Democrats in the future. Plus even democrats were enemies, (which they are not) shouldn't we love them, and try to go out of our way to work with them? This current tone also is quite toxic. It creates divisions and hate. Yes, we can see some things from elections, but whoever wins and loses the best posture is to work to satisfy all Americans.

Consider America's first policies. Won't the first be last? Does it promote America abroad or are we now increasingly being seen as enemies, where some people are now going out of their way to avoid our products?

???

So, it is extortion to do what every Democratic president has done, to have a bill to continue the government with no changes to the current budget.
To judge I think we wold need more specifics. But yes in general both sides use tactics that are undesireable. I suppose in this case the American voters will decide. However, in a government shutdown, some Americans will suffer more than others, depending on what their needs might be. Always better to not be dependent on the government anyway, but there are times when it is unavoidable.

Are their family and friends illegals or otherwise ineligible? If not they have nothing to be concerned about.
The health care cuts are not just for legal immigrants who work enough to qualify for Obamacare subsidies. The premiums Trump is cutting are for all Americans who use those health care subsidies. And yes, I do know poeple that are on those plans. I can understand though that those with employer health insurance may not want to help others get such benefits. That instead some prefer larger tax cuts for the wealthy, or other government options.
