  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Trump targets states that voted for Harris in shutdown fight

The White House is targeting Democratic states with its first wave of cuts to federal projects following the government shutdown, impacting billions of dollars in funding for energy and infrastructure in New York, California and elsewhere.

The cuts will impact 16 states — all of which voted for former Vice President Kamala Harris in last year’s presidential election. Vought did not identify exactly which programs would be cut in the social media announcement.

The moves reflect Trump’s intent to undermine programs benefiting Americans in blue-leaning states, while leaders from both parties work to negotiate a government funding agreement. Trump has suggested the shutdown could offer a pretense to cut programs he doesn’t like.

“We can get rid of a lot of things that we didn’t want, and they’d be Democrat things,” Trump told reporters on Tuesday ahead of the shutdown.

The Democrats are wanting to repeal portions of the big beautiful bill they don’t like for their vote for a seven week extension on keeping the government open while negotiations are ongoing. This is absurd and against previous public statements by many democrats in past similar situations. If the democrats want to change law they need to win elections and give up blackmail tactics that hurt real Americans. This is backfiring on democrats and only opens the door for Trump to make more cuts in the federal workforce not a very smart move for Democrat leaders IMO.
If the President wants to change laws he should allow Congress to do it. After all it is the legislative branch. If you do not like the supermajority then change the rules. The problem is that most bills that only require 50% of the vote are often poor poor bills. If you can't win 5 more democrats in the Senate
over to your side out of around 40, your bill is likely bad for America. When the democrats are the majority, I will say the same thing. If there are midterms I imagine you will see the votes switch. So to change the rules would be very shortsighted. better to make the dems win at least 5-9 votes too. Already the GOP Congress has gutted some protections as they did change the rules for now just 50% of appointments. So the dems will do the same and give the USA even more extreme liberals.

Because working people prefer their friends and family to have healthcare.
Are their family and friends illegals or otherwise ineligible? If not they have nothing to be concerned about.

What a diversion! The democrats who did not vote for the CR are grandstanding. 3 democrats did vote vote it and more will eventually come to their senses.

Remember when that one FEMA worker tried to deny a couple Trump-voters disaster benefits and the Right lost their mind, even though that person was quickly fired and their decision reversed? lol

Trump is using the extortion tactics. Saying he may close democratic agencies. Those agencies are funded by Congress and for all Americans.
It is quite amusing to see Trump’s actions portrayed as extortion when it is the Democrats that gave him the power to make those cuts by trying to use extortion themselves to get their way.

Trump is using the extortion tactics. .
???

So, it is extortion to do what every Democratic president has done, to have a bill to continue the government with no changes to the current budget.

The key is not firings. The key is to label the largest number possible as non-essential and THEN not bring them back, as has been done in the past. During a shutdown, the government always does with less. The government is NEVER forced to hire back everyone.

In the past, workers have been furloughed. No one has to be hired back, because they were never let go. By law, furloughed workers will be paid once the government re-opens.

Close to half of Americans blame President Trump and Republicans for the current government shutdown, according to a new poll.

In the poll from The Washington Post, 47 percent of respondents said “Trump and Republicans in Congress” are “mainly responsible for the federal government partially shutting down,” while 30 percent pinned the blame on “Democrats in Congress” for the shutdown.
Are the other 27% asleep? And we should believe a left leaning publication poll why?

TONY DOKOUPIL: So, Senator, you know, Republicans say what you’re really fighting for is taxpayer dollars for, as they put it, illegal aliens. I know that’s not strictly true, but there is a provision –

SEN. ELIZABETH WARREN: Oh, excuse me, not strictly true?

Federal agencies blast Democrats for the government shutdown. Are they violating the Hatch Act?

A banner on the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s website currently reads, “The Radical Left in Congress shut down the government. HUD will use available resources to help Americans in need.”

A message at the top of the Department of Justice website reads, “Democrats have shut down the government.”

“The larger problem is that it violates an ethics norm where agencies may perform the work of an administration, but they do it in a nonpartisan manner,” Payne said. “These statements are not from an individual. They’re from the agency, from the American government, and they are made in a way that divides the public based on partisan affiliation. And that is not a normal activity for a government agency.”

Payne also said the Office of Government Ethics was stripped of its head during the first week of President Donald Trump’s administration, leaving no clear ethics enforcement mechanism to resolve what appears to be a violation of an ethics norm. He added there’s no reason to think these types of messages will stop.

Should? OK, a fine opinion.

And we'll see where we are on Nov 1 when we are month into the shutdown.

Trump will focus as much marm as he can to Democratic states and districts and do some favorable things for Republican states.

As I said, we can discuss this again in November after senators have heard from their constiuants.

"We're not targeting federal agencies based on politics," Vance said. "We're targeting the people's government so that it as much if possible of the essential services get to continue to function."

(Let's see what the boss says.)

"I have a meeting today with Russ Vought, he of PROJECT 2025 Fame, to determine which of the many Democrat Agencies, most of which are a political SCAM, he recommends to be cut, and whether or not those cuts will be temporary or permanent," the president wrote on social media.

(Speaker Johnson, asked about potential firings, puts on his weasel-skin hat.)

"Is it constitutional? Is it lawful? Is it part of our system? Of course it is. It always has been," Johnson said without giving more details.
