Yep. When folks start talking about "exorcising" the demons out of your house or other inanimate objects, they're doing nothing but practicing medieval superstition.
In addition, folks claiming that brain diseases and other mental illnesses are mostly caused by demon possession or attacks are also being superstitious.
In our homes it is possible to have inanimate objects that are unholy. Pentagrams, Drug paraphernalia, religious candles, Buda the list could go on forever. No Christian should be identified with or have these symbols or inanimate objects in their house. Let's not forget that the sin of idolatry falls in 2 commandments creating or possessing manmade objects is the first commandment.
In saying all that I think that it is wrong for a Christian to be in the bondage of focusing on the spiritual impact of these objects or fear the evil associated with them, this can take our focus off of Jesus. But it would be equally wrong not to pay mind to these things we should not ignore them.
As for rebuking evil out of our homes, Luke says he gave us authority over snakes and scorpions and all the power of the enemy. Snakes and scorpions being physical and the enemies power being the spiritual.
When Jesus told us to pray let your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. The earth we stand on is still physical. The enemy has servants such as those truth stealing birds and has weapons that hinder God's will being done. In most cases especially if you are a father and head of a household you can see the enemy encroaching on the land and sheep he gave you. I have seen benefits and results in opening the front door and commanding the enemy to flee and to stop harassing yourself and your family members. In the beginning, I suffered ridicule from my children and relatives that they told about it. I get very little ridicule anymore. I have noticed that some close their eyes and agree now.
If anybody has ever read of deliverances in the Bible or seen a true deliverance anointing (on a believer) a lot of physical action sometimes accompanies the deliverance. Let's not forget that the enemy's territory and playground is in our flesh, the snake eats dust (our flesh is dust). These are physical, rebuking, binding and prayer and fasting are spiritual. But rebuking (aka commanding) has a physical component. It has to come from our physical lips and is usually loud and with some force. Binding and prayers are the same. Fasting relates to the physical food is an inanimate object. God's word is written in the physical in some form or another before we read it or hear it.
So even our most spiritual weapons have some existence in the physical, as do we no matter how spiritual we are (or think we are) our existence is still temporarily in the physical.
As for mental illness, the battleground between the flesh and the spirit is in the mind. Some things such as depression, addiction and schizophrenia are sinful, evil and even demonic in origin. But even if a person is delivered damage has been done. Like a person that vandalizes a building, the vandal is known by his damage not his person. So a healing is needed Jesus can heal supernaturally but that is the exception not the rule. Our (I include myself) sinful lack of faith, doubt, fear sin, disobedience which abound in us inhibits God’s healing power. God has also given us physical methods to heal the mind, they can be especially effective if they are used with love.
