No, but tell me
If I say
"Americans are Black."

Do you think I just said "we Americans are Black, White, Asian Latinx, Republican, Democrat, Liberal and a whole host of other identities? "
If someone hears that and responds with “Americans aren’t black!” they would be more wrong than the first person who said they are. All they would have to do to prove it is to point out one black American.

No saying "Americans are Asian!" would make that claim just as saying "Latinos are Black!" makes the claim that all Latinos are black.

I've wasted a lot of time in my life debating silliness. I'm sorry but today it just doesn't appeal to me.

It don't think making up more sentence that are totally dissimilar to what AOC actually said is not the best way to convince anyone that AOC did not say what she said but actually said something other than what she said. Perhaps you could revisit an old episode of Sesame Street where they point out the difference between "like" and "unlike" if you are having problems discerning that difference

This is absurd in the extreme. I get it, some folks don't like AOC. Let's go nuts and just rip apart every jot and tittle of a simple, clear statement.

Willfully misreading or simply failure to know one's own language, either way, I'm not really interested anymore.

Do you think that makes someone black?

"Black" is a socially constructed category, so it is really going to depend on the cultural context. American categories of race don't directly translate into Latin American categories. For instance, in Brazil and Latin America, there are different terms to describe what we would think of as "black". And it's really down to skin tone more than a singular, monolithic category like "race".

Ocasio-Cortez's phenotype definitely appears to have some African ancestory.

In Latin America, there's not as much traditional stigma against being black as in the US. Class distinctions are more important in determining ones place in the social hierarchy.

Golden, if someone claimed that a Republican's position on immigration was racist because it primarily discriminates against Latinos in favor of whites, and the reply was....

"Latinos are white, I think you're forgetting how diverse they are."

Would you be defending that statement because a minority of Latinos are in fact white? Or is that just deliberately sidestepping a racial question by equivocating 2 groups of people?

In the context of debates about American immigration to the US, most of the Latinos in question are not white. But I suppose if you want to get technical, alot of the prejudice against Hispanics is really about xenophobia more than racism per se. But in American culture, the two often go together and are practically indistinguishable.

This is a myth. I honestly don't know how it got started...but in many many places in central and south America, racism is rampant.

Does over half this forum register just to argue about divide and conquer human interest tabloid bs?

Looks like you're a new member...

You're in the discussion and debate section that's open to Christians and non-Christians alike. Since non-Christian members can post here, it probably looks like more people are posting here.

Well, since the Democrata are bandying the word 'reparations' around my guess is she is reserving a place in line......

That was my other guess...though I had considered the possibility she just wanted to avoid discussing racism in the latino community.

Some Latinos are white.

That's true.

This is a myth. I honestly don't know how it got started...but in many many places in central and south America, racism is rampant.

Of course stigma exists but it's not as much as in the US. There's a saying, "el dinero blanquea", or "money bleaches", and it exposes the reality that wealth is more important in Latin America than race. That doesn't mean that negative perceptions of race don't exist, but it doesn't carry the same importance as in the U.S.

Actually, she doesn't claim that...

"A lot of times I’ll hear people say, ‘OK, this is about Black Lives Matter, what about Latinos?’ and I always say, Latinos are black! We are Afro-Latina, and we run an entire racial spectrum,” Ocasio-Cortez replied."

I highlighted the relevant portion. You'll notice nowhere does she say "some".
I cannot help you with reading comprehension. Like creationists with their faulty interpretation of the Bible it appears that your interpretation may be overly literal.

Watch our for Black and White Fallacies. (No pun intended)

Instead of answering the question by telling the questioner what the Latinx community should do to stop racism among Latinx and among other races she makes a bone headed statement which seems to be implying that Latinx don't have to do anything to stop racism among them and among other races because they are black.
See, that I can agree with. She dodged the question, and it's a fairly important one, IMO.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: "Latinos Are Black" - 93.1FM WIBC

Believe me when I say that I wanted a better source for this. Unfortunately, the mainstream media seems to have ignored this completely....

Emphasis mine. It's true that those from Central American and South American nations can have any shade of skin....

It's nonsense to actually claim Latinos are Black though. I think she's desperate to jump on the victimhood train. Thoughts?
I think few sane people pay any attention to AOC. She's one of those 'look at me' people.
She's young so maybe she'll grow out of it. But that's just my opinion.

I took four years of Spanish in school and I live in a city with one of the largest Puerto Rican communities in the US. I've talked to Puerto Ricans themselves about race, including Puerto Ricans that would be considered black in the US.
