I have not been subjected to the biases mentioned due to the color of my skin and nor has my daughter. I believe my nephews can say the same and we represent two generations.

We were well-prepared for the realities of the world and American society. And specifically admonished not to perpetuate negative stereotypes of persons of color in any form. We were warned of its ramifications and the unpleasant results that follow.

Above all we were told that people judge a book by its cover and we were given examples of the practice in ourselves and loved ones. We saw first hand the consequences of stereotypes both good and bad.

All have sinned and fallen short of the glory. Prejudice and racism are the result of our fallen world. As is murder and the rest. You will never eradicate either. It will always be here until Christ’s arrival.

Only one person posed a danger in this story and it was the person who pulled a gun on some kids.

It was a wholly unnecessary action from an incredibly stupid person with a racial bias, and there is no reason for people to be making excuses for that person.

Conflation. My point was that even if the adult had some just cause to be suspicious, she still would have ended up in the wrong, with charges pending. Did I mention no one was shot?
It's people who pull things like this woman did that gives gun owners a bad name and ammunition for those who want to ban guns altogether.

Maybe you'd be interested in what these Second Amendment people had to say about this.

It is wonderful that you have not been judged for your appearance, but there are many people that have done the same thing and have still been mistreated or had law enforcement called on them. Nonetheless, no person should have to act or dress a certain way because a group of people are ignorant and prejudiced. Having an Afro or participating in break dance culture was once considered "uncultured," but now we are on the verge of possibly adding break dancing as an Olympic event. Rather than tell people that they should do everything in their power to avoid discrimination, the simpler thing would be to focus on the prejudice that turns innocent kids into criminals. Your comment also does not address this story, all it does is make vague statements about looking respectable so as not to have someone point a gun at you. It working for you does not mean it is somehow a universal thing. You seem to echo the misguided attitude of, "If someone attacks you, you should ask the question, 'what did I do to be attacked?' " When that is the question that only black people must ask, that defines perpetuates a racist system in which blackness is considered less than.

Blacks are not the only ones who are encouraged to ask themselves the question, "What did I do to be attacked?" Women who have been sexually assaulted have faced the same discrimination.

Very true, and this is always done in pursuit of maintaining a discriminatory and/or oppressive system where the perpetrators are considered faultless, while the victims must always prove themselves.

Explain the point of leaving your own neighborhood to go somewhere else to try and get donations. It happens here at Halloween. I've watched whole vans of Black kids being let off in White neighborhoods they have never even set foot in before because they think the Trick-or-Treating will be more lucrative there.

...so then you've already answered your own question...it's more lucrative and there's more chance of people giving money in neighborhoods that have more money. Easy concept.

My mom used to do the same thing with me & my brothers when we'd do school fundraisers. We'd get in the car, and we'd park along the street and do the door-to-door in the nicer development that was 3-4 miles away.

Only difference was, we didn't "look out of place" (which is what you seem to be suggesting is the cause), but the motivation was the same. We could either spend 4 hours walking around to sell $10 worth of candy bars...or make the quick trip up to the high-rent development, and make that at the first 2 houses.

I'm fortunate enough now to live in a nicer development and we get kids from the other half of town (white and black) coming through our development pretty regularly for school fundraisers. They know they'll have a better chance of getting donations. Not once I have ever heard the doorbell ring, looked out the window, held up a color chart to compare and said "Oh man, I'd better grab my Glock!"

This is the difference I’m referencing. If a problem arose your mother was able to address it. You weren’t on your own.
Actually, she used to wait in the car much of the time...but that's irrelevant. Anyone who's so prone to grab their gun because someone who looks different is knocking on their door is unlikely to have changed their course of action simply because there was a black woman in her 30's or 40's standing their with them instead of them being their on their own.

Unless Mom is bulletproof, I don't see how that would've diffused the situation.

I don't know why it's so hard for some folks to get their head around the concept that some people in this country are still racist enough that the sight of someone who looks different is enough to scare them into thinking they need a gun.

Thankfully you weren’t placed in a position to find out. The best approach in this scenario would be staying indoors and calling the authorities if she had concerns.

Exactly. The "both sides" were wrong argument is pure trash because just because a middle-aged black woman present doesn't mean you are not in danger of being considered being up to no good.

We've already seen that story: Black Oregon congresswoman Janelle Bynum reported to police by someone who thought she was casing the neighborhood

And I'm pretty sure for that story, there will be an excuse for what she should have done to not get the police called on her.

Or she should ask herself the question, would I be doing this if they were white kids. The kids had guns pulled on them and they did absolutely nothing wrong, trying to absolve this woman of blame is simply an attempt to look the other way. Likewise, trying to say, "Well, I'm black, it hasn't happened to me," doesn't change the injustice. The argument blaming the kids is similar to telling a woman her dress was too short as if, "You wouldn't have this gun pointed at you if you just did the right dance and jig," that's not true else we'd see that racial bias would decrease significantly based on factors like education and/or "respectability," it does not. Respectability politics is hogwash.

Four black teens were fundraising for their high school football team. A white woman held them at gunpoint.

Yet again, black people are told they must justify their existence or risk being shot. And despite her actions, the police department is treating someone that clearly committed a crime with leniency. I wonder how many people being booked get to leave without their mugshot being taken due to a "medical emergency." What's worse is the new get out of jail free claim is to say you "feared for your safety," which gives you a free pass to shoot someone. These laws need to change.

Opening the door is both a literal act and a figurative one. They both imply receptivity. There is little doubt the boys knocked on many doors that were not opened that day, hopefully mostly due to practical reasons (no adult was home; those who were home were occupied with tasks) or benevolence rather than any racial factor. Many who peered out to see who was on their doorstep very reasonably would not have answered because four boys, two of whom were in football jerseys, unexpectedly showing up would in all probability be wanting to sell something, and those who already had certainty that they were not interested would have felt it more kind to not open the door, and therefore open up their hope of a sell. They wouldn't have squandered anyone's time. My family used to live in a well-known wealthy area, and we constantly had people knocking on the door wanting something - to make a sell, to proselytize, or some other desire. Decades before we ever lived there a celebrity had so there were fans who'd knock hoping for a glimpse inside. We usually simply did not open the door to strangers, unless they were children at the age to be playmates for my siblings or me, but the few times we did we'd always see how that action lit this light of excitement in their eyes, regardless as to their biographical specifics (age, race, etc) or what their purpose was for being there. So if we weren't interested in giving them our money or our time, we didn't ignite that possibility knowing that we'd then be quickly extinguishing it. And if we had any fears of the person(s) approaching the house for whatever reason the very last thing we'd do is rush out to confront them.

From the article it's not clear if the kids even had the chance to knock on the woman's door since it states they were just approaching her house. It's obvious that she did open the door since she confronted them with a weapon. That defies reason; it's counterproductive in every way. Had they in any manner behaved inappropriately, such as refusing to leave after a sensible length of time made it clear the door would not be answered, or attempting to enter the home uninvited, she would have stated that as her defense. But she did not. She is the one who was the aggressor and needlessly inflicted trauma upon these kids.

It mentions in the article that her mugshot wasn't immediately taken due to a "medical emergency" which is likely bogus, that she was receiving preferential treatment due to her husband's position, or it could actually be legitimate. Her actions do not fall within the parameters of normal whatsoever, so it's possible something has caused an impairment to her judgement. In a photo of her and her husband, she's wearing noise-canceling headphones at some gathering, which is odd. Whatever the case, he's now resigned from the position, and they are moving. Their neighbors are glad they are leaving. Cross County Jail administrator resigns days after wife arrested for holding teens at gunpoint

It’s interesting to see success equated with respectability and ignoring injustice while those who speak out and fight injustice are called unsuccessful. As if anyone that speaks out against racism is not successful, which is spectacularly untrue.

You can still become a business leader, become the preeminent person in your field, achieve the highest level of education, yet still recognize and fight injustice. Mohammed Ali is a perfect example. The idea that you must ignore injustice because that will hinder you is wildly wrong.

Nonetheless, the main problem here is the how notions of respectability are meant to call whatever is not respectable inferior. That’s how one will argue that kids are responsible for having a gun pointed at them. Despite the fact that such a scenario has already happened to a congresswoman canvassing for reelection, a firefighter in uniform performing his duties, a man moving into his own apartment, and other incidents where people were anything but “unrespectable.” This is why any claims of respectability or claims that one must ignore racism is complete hogwash.

I think the irony of such attitudes is that they are the exact arguments made during the Civil Rights Movement. The idea that one should be silent and that will bring success has never been true. Success comes for those that work toward and work toward justice; you have simply reaped the rewards of other people’s labor. For everyone that sat at a lunch counter, there were many arguing to not rock the boat. Black kids have the right to canvas and raise money for their sports team without being molested. And if someone pulls a gun on them, you stand up to protect them, not blame them for an irresponsible person wielding a gun.

At the end of the day, when a congresswoman has the police called on her because she is soliciting support for her campaign, we know that respectability politics is hogwash. And we can be thankful that the police do not hold this view either, as this woman was charged.

The further info really makes me think she had some issues that impaired her judgement. But be that as it may, there is no justification for her pulling a gun on anyone that approached her door. I'm glad she was arrested; it was 100% her fault. There is no justification for pulling a gun on anyone that merely approached your door and rang your bell; or in this case just walked towards your door. High school kids usually don't need a chaperone when doing things like this; perhaps the lady needed an in home health aid or a constant companion b/c she couldn't handle someone approaching her door. I know when I have been glad to see my neighbors move it's usually because they act awful all the time or most of the time; since their neighbors feel strongly about speaking out then that's a high possibility it's the same case for them and this was just the episode that got her arrested.
