CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) -

At around 7:45 p.m. on Saturday, October 7, a group of white nationalists gathered in Emancipation Park carrying Tiki torches.

Around three dozen people showed up, and some in the crowd chanted "we will be back."

One person in the crowd was well-known "alt-right" white nationalist Richard Spencer.

White Nationalists Gather at Emancipation Park

These people have some gall going back there after what happened on August 12th. They need to get out and stay out of Charlottesville. I doubt Nazi nonsense (I'd like to use a stronger word than that, but it's against site rules) is very welcome there, for obvious reasons.

What possible benefit do they expect from this?
I would guess that they're trying to rile people up to get a reaction, so that they can whine about being "persecuted" by the "violent" left.

I noticed their rhetoric has been toned down a bet, it's not Jews will not replace us, but you will not replace us. Maybe they should just sell the stupid statue on ebay.

This is how you deal with people like that:
You play Wagner on the sousaphone, it scares the heck out of them. I prefer silly string myself but I would probably make a poor protestor.

Am I alone in thinking that the media attention they've been getting and counter protestering they've attracted is less productive than just ignoring them?

I dunno; I'm sure many feel bolstered by the counter-protesters. When you're a racial minority in a country with serious racial issues, this kind of thing can be very threatening and depressing.

The media reacts for ad revenue, not to be productive. It isn't their job to fix our problems, it's their job to make money. And reporting on this brings in viewers, so they're doing their job the only way we should expect them to. The way the media reacts is amoral, in my opinion.

As for counter-protestors, I agree that the counter protesting they've attracted is not productive, but I would disagree that all counter-protesting is not productive, if you were to go that far. Peacefully and calmly mocking and belittling them publicly is effective. That's how Superman crippled the KKK a long time ago, and it was much more effective than just ignoring them.

I remember seeing it back in the 90s...it's not that they didn't have rallies or protests...it's that nobody cared. They might get a short mention on the local evening news, and a short video that showed a small group shouting at almost no one except for maybe a few people who lobbed insults at them...and that's it. They looked foolish. For every 1 person they might have attracted to their cause, I'd bet another 10,000 thought they just looked like idiots...not even worth a spare thought let alone moment.

Nowadays, I'd guess their antics attract a lot more to their "cause". It's the difference between a group shouting about a need to fight/struggle/rise up to nobody but the few idiots you brought with you and shouting at a large crowd that's actively trying to fight you.

The ignorant observer looks at the first group and thinks they're not serious about the "problem" they want to "fight". When he looks at the second group though, it appears as if perhaps they have a cause to fight over...because there's people fighting back.

You can't ever legally stop them from gathering publicly...it's their constitutional right just as much as it is anyone's. It's like the old saying..."you can't fight fire with fire"...but you can remove it's fuel and watch it burn itself out.

That's a fair point...but it still has the same solution. If it's ignored in the media, it stops becoming profitable, and the media moves onto other stories.

I'm not saying all counter protesting is unproductive....just the kind of mass violence we've seen of late. Back when I was younger, it was just people passing by shouting out the occasional insult to make them look foolish...maybe slightly more than that...and when you look at the sizes of those groups back then, they were pitiful compared to now.

Sure, if every single media outlet got together and agreed to not cover it, that would work. As long as there's one dissenter, people are going to flock there to see the story covered because this is what people want to see. It's unrealistic to think they would ever stop covering it, and I don't begrudge them for doing so.

I agree. Like the video I posted earlier in the thread, belittling them and making their movement a joke helps to make people take them less seriously, which is good, but doesn't ignore them as if there's no problem with them at all, which would be bad.

Violent protestors just allow people to distract themselves from the original problem by creating a new problem. Protestors need to be more emotionally detached. Of course, if they weren't so emotionally attached, a lot of them wouldn't be out there protesting in the first place.

Of course they'll stop covering it...that's the nature of the news media...it's cyclical. Even something as ugly as hate groups can become routine and boring if it's overexposed. Once that happens, the news media will look for a fresh outrage to feed everyone.

I'll agree to that...

I think the violence is a response to the frustration of typical protesting.

Occupy Wall Street was a huge protest...and what did it gain?

For all the marching and protesting...what has the BLM gained?

It's an obsolete method of gaining political power...and it's hard to imagine a more obvious expression of its impotence than
when the targets of protests become statues.

You give Americans in general too much credit for wanting to see something new. Look at Hollywood and tell me people get bored with the same old thing over and over again.
What's bad about it?
Completely ignoring it takes away some of the stigma of participating in it.

lol I'll tell you after I go see the new Blade Runner movie tomorrow.

Perhaps, but I think it also takes away the allure of it as well. I'm not saying don't tell your children that these people aren't awful...by all means, explain to them why they're awful. After that though...let it go...

There's no getting rid of them completely...so the best we can hope for is to let them wither and shrink until they're merely fringe groups again...extremists holding to extremism on the outskirts of political thought. It's a far better place than where they are now...slowly circling the main stage of political power.

Ha! I'm looking forward to that, even though I couldn't finish the first one. I don't know what to think about that...

You might be on to something. You ever see the "Harley Rider" episode of South Park? The way the boys dealt with that is how I'd like to see people protest, although I can't describe it on this website...

So after ranting and raving like a lunatic about NFL players respectfully and peacefully kneeling in protest against racial discrimination, just curious, has our current and glorious leader managed to say anything about Nazis returning to Charlottsville?

Or is it only black people who disrespect America by protesting, and when white supremacists honor traitors it's totally cool.

I mean I know the answer already, but just thought I'd ask.

Never finished the first? I'd be lying if I didn't admit that I think the love story in the middle of it drags down the momentum a bit...but it's a thematically rich movie. It's got obvious themes of "what constitutes alive?" and "what defines oneself?" mixed in with themes of slavery, emotion, duty, crime...it's a pretty deep movie firing on a lot of levels. I'm lowering my expectations for the new one though...I'd just see it because I like dystopian future settings.

lol yes...I know exactly what you're talking about and I wouldn't mind seeing them handled that way too.
