Here in the 21st century, amongst my circles, that question seems to typically be answered based on who makes more money. In most cases, neither makes enough to allow one parent to stay home. When one does make enough, it's usually, though not always, the guy who does. There is a stay-at-home dad a block down from me with 3 kids and IIRC a wife who's some kind of doctor. If my wife was pulling down enough money for this to be feasible, I'd probably be more inclined to stay home than her. We each have our strengths when it comes to child-rearing, but temperamentally, I'm the one better suited to that arrangement.

I'm sure it has nothing to do with those career fields being hellholes of toxicity, does it?

When I did live audio production, there were tons of female stagehands and techs - not as many as dudes, but way more than in other trades. They were pushing stagecarts and roadcases, rigging lights, building sets, just like the guys. The difference wasn't the work, but the culture.

I don't quite understand how plumbing toilets would offend the female sensibilities while lifting obese patients and cleaning beadpans wouldn't.
