  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Another liberal judge injects her politics into law...

No, SHE is...
I wonder what you might have said if we asked you when she was selected by Trump if you'd accept her rulings on any matter.

It is plainly obvious from your posts that the answer would be 'Only if the ruling supported Trump'. In which case any arguments you make on this matter are worthless.

DOJ issues subpoenas to NY AG Letitia James, including over Trump civil fraud case and NRA case: Sources

Top prosecutor is rejecting Trump pressure to charge New York AG

A key federal prosecutor in Virginia, where James Comey was indicted, is resisting bringing charges against Letitia James.

Elizabeth Yusi, who oversees major criminal prosecutions in the Norfolk office of the Eastern District of Virginia, has confided to co-workers that she sees no probable cause to believe James engaged in mortgage fraud, the two sources told MSNBC. Yusi plans to present her conclusion to the president’s new interim U.S. attorney, Lindsey Halligan, in the coming weeks, they said.

Prosecutors in the Eastern District are now bracing for Yusi to be fired for her own resistance to try a case that many lawyers have said lacks sufficient evidence, according to the two people.

--
Meanwhile, I understand Halligan has had to bring in outside prosecutors for the Comey case, presumably because no one in her office wants to touch it.

Lutheran Missal Project

When I asked on X I was told by many good sources that the ESV was cheaper than the NKJV for the LCMS Synod as a whole so we went that way.

Either way, I'm happy we are using the NKJV. I will be reading this Lord's Day and I'm looking forward to it.

"Bishop Jeff Miskus presided over the installation of Rev. Dionatan Ferreira (center) to serve the congregation of Our Saviour's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Chatham, Ontario. Pastor Ferreira also serves Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Amherstburg, Ontario (Lutheran Church—Canada). The service was well attended. Pictured here with Rev. Ferreira and Bishop Miskus is Rev. Marvin Bublitz, Regional Pastor of the LCC Eastern Region."

Oh you have beautiful vestments, you and Mark’s church both are liturgically resplendant!

I find myself wishing there was an award that could be given to churches that do a particularly good job at liturgy, so as to recognize the appreciation of liturgical beauty, but not an award the awarding of which would be any kind of show, but rather just something that would pop out of no where to recognize the clergy, choirs and chancery or vestry or equivalent internal management structure of a church whose liturgy exuded beauty, as a means of glorifying God.

By the way I increasingly support open source Bible translations and those already in the public domain; one thing I admire about the Episcopal Church is historically they released all of their editions of the Book of Common Prayer into the public domain.

Also if memory serves, the Lutheran adaptation of the BCP that formed the basis for various historical Lutheran liturgies in the US such as the 1941 Lutheran hymnal was in the public domain, I think its called the “Common Service” and was a modification of the BCP to meet the specific Eucharistic and liturgical needs of the Lutheran churches, which at the time were primarily celebrating the Divine Service in the languages of the Old Country, such as German, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Finnish, Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian and so on - especially in German. I wonder if any German speaking Lutheran churches still exist in North America or if German is now used primarily by Old Order Mennonites, the related Amish group, and other Radical Reformed groups? There is a seriously endangered Lutheran speaking community in Texas which I don’t think is affiliated with the Mennonites, but it could be.

Of course we do have a few German and Scandinavian language churches such as those operated for mariners, but unfortunately in the case of the Scandinavian Lutheran churches if I recall all of these are associated with the churches in their own countries. If I recall the only Lutheran church in Europe that is part of the ILC along with the LCMS and the LCC is the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Latvia. Interestingly, since the downfall of the former USSR, while the liberal Estonian church has not been able to substantially increase its membership vs. the large number of secular atheists who fell victim to the massive Soviet propaganda campaign and its aggressive subversion of various churches (with minority churches like the Lutherans being much more heavily scrutinized), the more traditional Latvian church has regained 30% of the population of that country, which is a huge victory for European Christianity.

The Lost House of Israel

I wish Biblically ignorant people would stop making statements like this...all that does is inflame hate against Jews and is historical revisionism. ROME killed Yeshua. The Jewish leadership at the time was complicit and SOME Jews in the crowd yelled to crucify Him. No Jew actually killed Him. There were Jews living in many parts of the world that never even heard of Yeshua or His death at the time and yet you are blaming them for something they did not do.
I do not buy this. The Romans would not have crucified Jesus unless the Jews demanded it.
The Jewish people cursed themselves, Matthew 27:25, and after 2000 years, they remain as Jesus haters.

It is Biblically ignorant people like yourself, who pray for the Jews, despite Jeremiah 14:11...do not pray of these people for I will not listen. Jeremiah 11:14. The wickedness of Judah will never be wiped out, they will die for it. Isaiah 22:14

I say again; It is only the false teaching of the 'rapture to heaven' of the Church, that must have the Jews on earth going thru tribulation, while they sit up in heaven. Unbelievable nonsense, but a fable that many have fallen for; to their discredit. 2 Timothy 4:3-4
Bible Prophecy is clear; the entire Holy Land will be cleared and cleansed by the Lord on His Day of fiery wrath. Only a few Christian Jews will survive by hiding underground. Isaiah 29:1-4, Hosea 4:3, Zephaniah 1:2-18

THEN; the Lost House f Israel will be revealed as the Christian peoples from every ethnicity and the Lord will gather them from every corner of the world, into all of the Holy Land. Ezekiel 34:11-16, Isaiah 66:18b-21, Psalms 107. Great will be that Day; Isaiah 35:1-10

Trump suggests he’ll release Jeffrey Epstein ‘client list’ if elected: ‘I’d have no problem with it’

Mike Johnson ducks Epstein files questions, refuses to swear in Grijalva

“It’s totally absurd,” Johnson said. “This has nothing to do with that. It’s another red herring.”

“I’m for maximum disclosure,” he continued. “Donald Trump is not implicated in this. … He wants to protect the innocent victims. He’s very passionate about that. He’s for maximum disclosure and his DOJ has shown that.”

[His Attorney General had them on her desk weeks ago. Where's the beef?]

[Rep Massie-R, who's leading the petition] “Contrary to what he says, @SpeakerJohnson is doing everything he can, including delaying the swearing in of the most recently elected member of Congress and spreading misinformation about the legislation, to block a vote in Congress on legislation to release the Epstein files.”

Democrats say Johnson is keeping her sidelined to stall that vote. His office insists it’s “standard practice.” But that excuse doesn’t hold water — he’s sworn in two Republicans this year when the House wasn’t even in session.

Ezra Klein: Charlie Kirk was practicing politics the right way

You hold these two things:
  • Mainstream views should not be given more respect than fringe views.
Not on the basis of popularity. Yes on the basis of passing tests against reality.
  • Mainstream views are more likely to be correct than fringe views.
Yes.
And you are telling me that you reject this premise:
  • Views which are more likely to be correct should not be given more respect than views which are less likely to be correct.
I do reject that.
Now it looks like you are simply contradicting yourself in rejecting the premise I laid out. You want to reject it because it is irrational, and yet the views which you have assented to logically entail the irrational premise. So you're in a pickle.
Popularity is the wrong test for a proposition, even tho theres a correlation with correctness. Testing against reality otoh is the right test, and its available, and it reduces false positives a lot better that testing against popularity. If popularity was the only tool in the box, then ok, its better than nothing for assigning respect. Thankfully we have better tools!

Pickle avoided.

But you're missing the point. You say that, "His main violation was murdering a peaceful person," and yet you think force can sometimes be applied against peaceful persons.
Force of law is different than force of bullets. It has a well established non-violent path and can be applied to non violent law breakers. Of course if they resist force of law with their own violence, then that escalation can be opposed with violence.
This is why your account isn't very fundamental, and is not fully consistent. Beyond that, I asked you what Robinson did wrong at the most fundamental level, and you answered by telling what his "main violation" was. It's not clear that this even attempts to answer the question.
Murdering a peaceful person is not "fundamental" enough? I mean, in the Christian view its literally one the the basic commandments. You will have to somehow be much more specific about what youre asking me for.

The USA's 250th birthday to be celebrated with Octagon UFC/MMA fight, possibly on the White House South Lawn

I am being serious...

I do think, at least to some degree, it has to do less with the actual activity, and more to do with the perceptions about the fan bases and how "sophisticated" (or not) they're perceived to be.

So for instance the type of entertainment fans may discuss at a wine & cheese party is somehow "better than" the types of entertainment that fans would discuss a backyard bbq. Sort of the "Frasier vs. his Dad" dynamic.

I'd probably say the most poignant example would be the difference between how F1 racing and NASCAR are perceived. (despite being quite similar) The major differences in those are the "prestige" of the brands that sponsor them, and the income level of the people who attend.
I'm sure that there is a backlash against being perceived at being unsophisticated, but this and the affect of most of the MAGA movement strike me as overcorrecting as a deliberate middle finger to the establishment and those who'd try to uphold any sort of standard.

If the comparison is between F1 and NASCAR or boxing and MMA then, sure, any sort of pretense that one is more sophisticated or gentlemanly than the other is largely empty snobbery.

But comparing a person sitting at a piano to a cage fight? c'mon.

Curious as to what precisely makes Full-Preterism considered an non orthodox heresy?

I'm not asking as a Preterist. I disagree with them as strongly as I disagree with dispensationalists and pre, mid, post, ah= millennialists as far as the scripture is concerned. But I have never seen someone cite anything other than what they believe to tag them as "heretics." So it is something I have been curious about for decades.
Here's why, and your question proves that the following is the case to this very day.

The Nicene Creed becomes state law.
The Roman Emperor Theodosius I's Edict of Thessalonica in 380 CE did not make all forms of Christian practice illegal, but it condemned and outlawed all forms of Christianity that did not conform to Nicene Christianity. This had severe consequences for Christian groups considered heretical, particularly Arianism.
Background: The Arian controversy
The Edict of Thessalonica came during decades of intense theological dispute in the Roman Empire known as the Arian controversy.
Arianism: Led by Arius, a priest from Alexandria, this school of thought argued that Jesus Christ was not co-eternal with God the Father but was a created being, subordinate to him.
Nicene Christianity: This orthodox position held that Christ was consubstantial, or of the same divine substance, as the Father. This was first established at the First Council of Nicaea in 325 CE.
The controversy was deeply political and religious, with different emperors and regions supporting opposing viewpoints. Emperor Theodosius's predecessor, Valens, was an Arian, which had allowed Arianism to flourish in the East.
The Edict's prohibitions
With the Edict of Thessalonica, Emperor Theodosius I formally mandated adherence to Nicene Christianity throughout the Roman Empire and designated all other Christian interpretations as heresy.
Specifically, the edict declared:
Marginalization of heretics: The law branded non-Nicene Christians as "foolish madmen" and decreed that their places of worship could not be called "churches".
Exclusion from cities:
Later decrees, beginning in 381 CE, forbade heretics from meeting for worship within city walls, effectively banishing them from urban centers and their social and religious life.
Confiscation of property: The state began seizing the property of heretical Christian groups, including their churches, and turned them over to Nicene bishops.
State-sanctioned punishment: Theodosius's edicts authorized imperial authority to punish those who deviated from Nicene doctrine. While early punishments were non-lethal, the legal basis was established for later, more severe persecution. In 385, the bishop Priscillian became the first Christian to be judicially executed for heresy, though the sentence was condemned by some prominent bishops.
The aftermath
The Edict of Thessalonica effectively ended the Arian controversy by using imperial power to crush theological dissent. Theodosius's actions, and the subsequent First Council of Constantinople in 381 CE, ensured that the state and church would enforce a single, orthodox interpretation of Christianity. All other Christian groups, no matter how large their following, were cast as illegal and dangerous enemies of both the church and the state.

Whereas, all the prophecies, all the promises and all the grammar point to a first century fulfillment, futurism has it narrowed down to eternity.
Jesus said in the book of Revelation He was coming quickly using the present tense 4 times. I guess believing Him is considered a damnable heresy. Well, I'm going to believe Him anyways.

Morality without Absolute Morality

You didn't answer the question. Why are you so dishonest? Here it is again:
I told you why the question makes no sense. It's a tautology. I won't explain that again.

While you think on that, check out the above post. It seems that while I think that sexual intercourse without consent is wrong (because of that circumstance), others disagree (and they aren't 'godless nihilists' either). I guess morality comes down to who you ask. Do you know what the term for that is?

God Has Been My Help!

“My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food,
and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips,
when I remember you upon my bed,
and meditate on you in the watches of the night;
for you have been my help,
and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy.
My soul clings to you;
your right hand upholds me.” (Psalm 63:5-8 ESV)

Life is not always easy. Sometimes it is very hard. We go through trials and tribulations to test our faith. We face serious challenges. Sometimes we have to make what may appear to be life and death decisions. We come up against opposition and people who dislike us or who disapprove of us because of our walks of faith in obedience to the Lord, and because we teach the truth of the Scriptures and not the lies which are so popular. And so it is comforting to know that our Lord is with us through every step of the way.

Now, when I say “us,” I am speaking of those who are of genuine faith in the Lord Jesus Christ through dying with Christ to sin and being raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in him, no longer to live as slaves to sin, but as slaves to God and to his righteousness (See Romans 6:1-23). We are not perfect people yet, because we are still clay in the hands of the Potter (God) being made into the likeness of character of Jesus Christ. But we are those for whom sin is no longer our practice, but obedience to God’s commands is our practice (see Luke 9:23-26).

No matter what we are going through, or what life challenges we are being faced with day by day, we can confidently rest in our Lord, knowing that he has all things under his command, and that he will work it all out according to his plan, as long as we rest in him and we cooperate with his plan for our lives, by his grace, and in his power. We do not have to fear what other humans are doing, or how that might impact us, as long as our trust is in the Lord and we are relying on his strength and wisdom to make it through.

“But those who seek to destroy my life
shall go down into the depths of the earth;
they shall be given over to the power of the sword;
they shall be a portion for jackals.
But the king shall rejoice in God;
all who swear by him shall exult,
for the mouths of liars will be stopped.” (Psalm 63:9-11 ESV)

All throughout human history there have been people who have strongly opposed God and his servants and messengers, and such is it now, too. Especially in our present day and age, those who are of genuine obedient faith in the Lord Jesus, who are following the Lord with their lives in surrender to the will of God, are on “the chopping block,” i.e. they are in danger of being removed and eliminated from the fellowship and approval of a large majority of people who profess faith in Jesus Christ, pastors included.

Why? Because a cheaper version of “the gospel” has taken over and is leading what seems to be the majority of those professing faith in Jesus Christ to follow after the lies and to reject the truth of the gospel. For they are being told that all they have to do is to make a profession of faith in Jesus Christ and now all their sins are forgiven and heaven is secured them for eternity, but regardless of how they live. Not many these days are teaching God’s requirements for death to sin and obedience to our Lord.

So, if you are a follower of Christ who is teaching the biblical gospel in an era where the majority seem to all be accepting the lies of the enemy as truth, don’t be surprised if you lose friends and if other professing Christians turn against you and/or are hateful toward you, and/or if they just exclude you and ignore you. Keep sharing the truth that faith in Jesus, which is persuaded of God, requires that we deny self, die to sin daily, and walk in obedience to our Lord’s commands, in practice, or not have life in Christ.

law discussions belong in the law/sabbath area, or controvertial.

I can't reason when someone uses their words as if its the same as Scripture. If you want to post Scripture to make your points I might engage.

I don't know who ever spoke of 613 laws, and why elevate a non-Biblical number over a Biblical one Deut4:13 Exo 34:28
There you go. A list of all 613 laws including book and verse.

That's a pretty weak diversion, brother! You know the issue was not a matter of how many requirements there were under the Law of Moses. I use that number, borrowed from the Jews, to be clear that I'm speaking of the entire Law, and not just Sabbath Law, or Moral Law, or the 10 Commandments, etc. The Old Covenant was required in full, as Jesus said in Matt 5.

So, you are diverting away from the main issue, which was that you were quoting Jesus when he spoke under the Old Covenant system and spoke with respect to that Old Covenant--not the New Covenant. By contrast, he said that he had come to "fulfill" it in some way, which we now know was in himself and at the cross. All of those requirements were "nailed to the cross," as Paul said.

I do recall that you argued, I believe, that Jesus said the Law would be in effect "until the heavens pass away." But if that was true we would now be under the Old Covenant still, and we are not!

So, what did Jesus mean by saying that until he fulfilled these laws they would remain in effect, and that they were as inviolable as the universe itself? What he meant was that until he fulfilled those laws in himself and on this earth we cannot dismiss the Law and its fulfillment in him. And until he fulfilled the part at the cross Israel would be required of it in total.

The fulfillment of the Law, therefore, is taking place in two stages. One, at the cross Israel stopped being required to live under those laws. Two, in the current age of the New Covenant we now live in Christ as the fulfillment of the Law, which is simply his spiritual righteousness.

It has nothing to do with counting how many requirements there were under the Law of Moses. It has everything to do with the New Covenant being in effect as the "fulfillment" of that Covenant *in Jesus himself.*

I deeply resent your continued claim that I am making my words "equal with Scriptures." I have never done this! That is slanderous. It seems you cannot be challenged without making a personal attack? That only shows the weakness of your position when you do that.

Morality without Absolute Morality

My intention was not to suggest that marital rape was justified when the spouse denies intimacy. The intention was that depending on the circumstances, grace will be given to a spouse who is withholding intimacy.
That's two sides of the same coin. 'Grace will be given..'? So she is obliged to accede to her husband? You know that if she doesn't consent then it's rape?

It's been my point that sexual intercourse in certain circumstances - without consent for example, is wrong. Because of the context. You have now said that even in those circumstances it's might not be wrong.

If that's not relative morality then relative morality doesn't exist.

The Brokenness of Christianity

I think we might make strides if we actually came to the table and sorted stuff out. Instead, people are quite happy sitting in their denominational echo chamber and everyone says the same thing, "we have scripture right, everyone else is wrong". Personally, I think every single denomination is wrong to some extent but we are only getting more fragmented because people are uncomfortable with admitting they're wrong on something. I mean, 45,000 denominations?! No wonder the bible talks about the church diverting from the truth before the trib starts.
It is said among Jews: if you put 10 Jews in a room to discuss an issue, there will be 15 different opinions. This, of course, is a joke, indicating that Jews have generally accepted the fact that everyone has their own opinion about things, having different perspectives. It doesn't make any of them right or wrong.

And even if Christians accept the same attitudes about themselves, it doesn't mean we have to say that someone else's opinion is right, just to try to position ourselves in unity. One of the problems with separating into different denominations has to do with the pride or fear of people not willing to say, "I could be wrong about my opinion." Many times when people have conflicts of opinion, they fear that if they are wrong, then maybe they're wrong also about what they believe, and if they're wrong with that, then they might be going to hell. This kind of fear is included in "the fear of death" in Heb. 2:15. It's a very complex fear that only faith in Christ can deliver from, since it has many factors involved.

Since most Christians, and even Christian leaders, are "sheep," with limited knowledge, the tendency to cultism is a real danger. This is why many of us talk about "majoring on the majors and minoring on the minors," and try to come up with "essential doctrines" of the faith. Just because some respected leader says something provocative to get people to think, doesn't mean we have to accept it as absolute truth. The problem is that most people are like sponges of knowledge - once they hear something, it becomes tradition, and to hell with anyone who disagrees.

The Brokenness of Christianity

The term "Christian" means to be a follower of Christ. That in turn, means to be a student of his teachings and walk those teachings out in your every day life. In this day and age though, there are over 45,000 different denominations world wide with 6 main branches. We are just way too fragmented... To give that point on how inconsistent we are, here is an article that discusses a research poll on percentages of just the core main points of Christianity and what people believe.
-Article-
Here is an example:
  • 64% believe that “Everyone is born innocent in the eyes of God.”
  • 53% agree that “Everyone sins a little, but most people are good by nature.”
  • 53% think that “The Holy Spirit is a force but is not a personal being”—compare this with the fact that 98% agreed with the statement: “There is one true God in three persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.” Talk about inconsistent!
  • 47% agree that “God accepts the worship of all religions, including Christianity, Judaism, and Islam.”
  • 28% say that “Jesus was a great teacher, but he was not God.”
  • 17% believe that “The Bible, like all sacred writings, contains helpful accounts of ancient myths but is not literally true.”
  • 19% affirm that “Modern science disproves the Bible.”
  • 16% likewise say that “The Bible’s condemnation of homosexual behavior doesn’t apply today.”
  • 28% think that “Religious belief is not about objective truth”—and another 19% aren’t sure how to answer this question.
But read the rest in order to see just how disjointed it really is.

We.... are a mess.... How can we spread the gospel when we can't even agree on the basics!?
I had a vision while in Mass and God pointed out another person and said " This person cannot be One with God" and pointing out another person said, "and this person cannot be One with God, without you each being One with each other."

If we agreed with each other wasn't the important issue. It's if God accepts each of us a his child, through possession of the Holy Spirit, that Spirit also makes us One with each other, even if we did not accept it.

God gives his children a Spirit of love which makes us One. If we would stop worrying about our disagreements and focus on what we agree on, that would help bring us together.

Is an Apology Necessary?

Honestly, its a complex question.

It can range from a very simple scenario such as - I hold the door open for someone with an armful of grocery bags. The person trips over their own feet and falls flat on their face anyway. I can be sorry in sympathy they fell, but I did nothing wrong to apologize for.

But other long term scenarios are more complex. In any event, only God knows the future. We humans are never going to foresee all possible ways something can work out for good or bad.

FBI Artic Frost targeting Conservatives

Are you asserting that Kirk didn't take the 5th when asked about deleting his text messages? (and virtually everything else he was asked about)

Given the putative topic of this thread, what do you make of the fact that Kirk was not targeted by any criminal indictments, despite him fiffing his way through this interview? He was specifically instructed that...

I will also note that the Fifth Amendment provides a witness the ability to refuse
to answer a question if they have a reasonable belief that a truthful answer could be used
against them in a criminal prosecution, not simply because the witness would prefer not
to answer the question.
Where was he questioned at? What kind of proceeding?

Has Kirk's Death Prompted You?

I think in the same way today we are witnesses. Just as the generations after Paul who did not witness Christ but witness Him in others that witnessed Christ. It was just as real as Christs spirit was real. We give testimony of a real event that happened a round 2000 years ago that Christ came to save the world from sin and death and offer the life we have been looking for.
Paul also used prophecy to prove that Jesus was the Messiah. In Acts 28:23, it says that Paul used the "Law and the Prophets" to convince people that Jesus was the Christ. We can also do this. We use the Law to show the knowledge of sin and that the unbeliever needs a saviour, but then we can also use the prophecies in the Bible to prove that Jesus was who He said He was.
Here is an example of what I say to people to prove that the bible is not just a made-up story and that Jesus was the Messiah.
"If I wrote 300 predictions of future events and all came true with perfect accuracy, you’d know something supernatural was at work in me. That’s exactly what we see in the Bible. The Old Testament contains over 300 predictions that were fulfilled in the life of Jesus Christ. That He was born in Bethlehem, He would enter Jerusalem on a donkey, He was betrayed for 30 pieces of silver, He had nail-pierced hands and that He would take on the sins of the world. And that is only 5 of the 300 prophecies. No other book, not even the Quran, has this prophetic accuracy."
From here, most people will not disagree, but they say that they will have to investigate the Bible more.
