And how does that change what I said about the history of slavery in the United States or the fact that black people were denied civil rights and equality for 99 years after slavery was finally abolished?

If he would have school marmed in that manner would you have applauded him? Or would you have said he was being dishonest and probably used some dog whistle so his supporters understood the comment was insincere?

Yes, there isn't really a comparison.

Goes back to the founding. States Rights(Thomas Jefferson) or Federalism(Hamilton).

Plenty of slavery in China. I don't think the Mandarins particularly care what ethnicity is enslaved in work camps or factories. The legal system enforces a state of slavery through laws, and opposition to God.

Yes, the Civil War was caused by a conflict over states' rights - specifically states' rights to legalize slavery. That's inherently racist. I'm sure that there were some people in the South who were not racist, but I suspect that they did not support the CSA government.

Hypothetically, the Union could have been slave holding & the confederacy abolitionist. The federalist and confederate political systems are race neutral but could also be racist.

I mean Trump distinguished between people who have pried in Robert E. lee vs those who worship Hitler. His extended remarks, usually ignored, stressed that.

Robert E Lee committed armed treason against his country. The only elevated position in a town square he should have received was hanging from the end of a yard arm.

And these people who have pride in Robert E. Lee were proudly marching alongside Nazis and Klansmen?

Can this Lost Cause mythology please just die, or not be brought up constantly? Every declaration of Secession mentions slavery. The basis of the conflict was slavery.

Given that the US routinely sends troops halfway around the world to kill people who never messed with the US, I can see absolutely no point in getting worked up over talk - mere talk - like this.

Actually Lee's choice to accept the magnanimous offer of peace helped save the Union. I'd reading or viewing April 1865: The Month That Saved America.

Lee was a coward and traitor to refuse the Elected Republican President Lincoln’s offer to lead the Federal Army into the rebellious South and eliminate all the opposition to our strong Government and Republican Leader.

And in reality, the actual Confederacy broke off from the Union in large part to preserve slavery. And in reality, Donald was referring to the "Take Back the Right" marchers, not Southerners in general.

The US had the Articles of Confederation before our current Constitution. Whatever America’s flaws were, the Articles were race neutral politically. Articles of Confederation

When the US was still under the Articles of Confederation, 5 states had either started to or abolished slavery. Slave states and free states - Wikipedia

Yes, because the system of confederacy in general is not about slavery, but the South's breaking away was about slavery, as we can see from the declarations of succession and the quotes from those in positions of power, such as its Vice President, that stated it was about keeping slaves.

This ^ is the view that is often held by people who would benefit from better instruction in US History.

In reality, the idea that the United States were in a federation was dominant until the War. It was not until after the war that people spoke of "the United States of America, it" rather than "the United States of America, they."

And the Pledge of Allegiance, which came later also, was meant as indoctrination, almost propagandistic, by including "One Nation, Indivisible" as part of the wording, since that was a reversal of the historic view concerning the nature of the union.
