  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

That's not a question I can answer exactly. I don't think God wants you to not get along with your mother and not to hate your life (depending what you mean). But sometimes we have to insist on Truth and it costs us being able to get along with someone. On the other hand, sometimes we need to accept difficult situations in humility and bear them with thankfulness. And so on. I'm afraid I don't know the answer for you. There can be different answers. I wish you had someone wise enough there with you to help you sort it out. There are no priests anywhere nearby that you can get to even for one time to talk? Or maybe you need to email someone in detail so they can help you? It's hard to go through such things alone and not know the right thing to do. You have my prayers. But I really hope you find a way to seek some wisdom. I wish I could help more.

I hope he can help you. Every time I was in a difficult situation as far as faith and relationships, I talked with my priest. He was always very helpful. Different people have different gifts though. If your priest can't help very much, you can seek another. But in general I've found priests to agree on a lot of these things and have good answers.

Prayers. I know you're in a hard spot.

My mom, feeling that the Christian faith she had mostly held throughout her life had failed her, and not produced the results for her and her family that she had hoped for, has turned to the Ahmadi sect of Islam. It has turned the main completely open relationship in my life, something I have with almost no one, into one of small talk.
My friends, the few I've managed to make over here in Russia, mostly live in Moscow and are too busy, we don't see each other much any more. My wife doesn't share my views; we even see Orthodoxy differently. My adult kids don't make much effort to contact me; my younger kids are busy with their own lives. So if you feel alone, you're not the only one. There are a lot of us out here.

Pray for the Episcopate who is under such great pressure right now, pray for their personal holiness and commitment to Orthodoxy, that we might remain unified and free of scandal - being a light on a hill for those lost in the world.

Please pray for us (my daughter, my wife). Something of great magnitude has happened, I do not understand it all and I cannot speak about it right now.
