Walk up to your boss, and, in the name of Bernie Sanders, demand $15/hr.

If you're really brave, demand $24/hr. in the name of AOC

tell me what happens

Meanwhile, millions of Americans stand by willing and able to work for $4-7/hr., same as the "essential" (to quote Geraldo Rivera) illegal workers currently filling those exact same jobs for those exact same wages

Follow the science -- all humans are 99.9% the same
This argument is utterly ridiculous and I feel more stupid in having participated in it for this long.

It's so easy in a thread like this to get lost in the weeds and lose sight of what this is really about: workers' lives being important enough to be paid enough for them to survive.

Several selfish people in this thread think that this is somehow "unfair" and write patronizing screeds about how minimum wage workers are all teens and need to "learn skills" for their lives to mean enough to their bosses. I don't. Every worker in this country - I don't care if they're a fry cook at McDonald's, a computer programmer or miner - should, at the absolute least, make enough money to be able to pay their bills, put food on their table and make rent. They should also be unionized so that they can collectively bargain with management for their rights. Period.

This is a nonnegotiable point for me, and I'm the Rock of Gibraltar on it. That's my last word on this subject.

Interesting that "capitalism" is at the bottom of the list, seeing that it's the one thing that can save America going forward, and should be at the top of their list of concerns. :preach:
But we already have capitalism and neither major party is talking about getting rid of it. Compare and contrast with GOP efforts to invalidate the recent election - that's an actual threat promoted by national-level candidates of one of the two major parties.

The 1.9 Trillion dollar COVID stimulus package is sadly lacking in help to Americans hit by COVID restrictions. Americans suffering from government shutdowns need help and the Democrats are not giving it to them. They pretend to care. If they cut back on the waste in the package Americans could get as much as $20,000 for families. But instead the Democrats want to fork out a measly $2000 per person and give more money to foreign causes and big tech and Pelosi's pet causes. A republican added an amendment to prove the waste, but it was voted down.

https://www.theblaze.com/news/paul-gosar-covid-bill-amendment-10000-checks

That's a bit of a misleading post, though I'd admit it's got pork in it.

May I remind you that when Trump first said that he would not sign the *last* Covid-19 relief bill without a $2000 per person stimulus, it was Pelosi and the Democrats in the house who came back into session and immediately amended the house bill to include that change. The GOP under Mitch McConnell however *refused* to authorize that change that Trump had requested, so the previous bill passed with just a $600 per person stimulus. Had the GOP acted with compassion as the Democrats did, there wouldn't have been any immediate need for another stimulus package. I think it's therefore a bit misleading to suggest democrats alone are to blame for this fiasco. There's plenty of blame to go around.

The [new COVID relief] bill provides a sharp contrast to the main economic bill passed during the Trump years — the 2017 tax cut.

Both measures had similar price tags. But the Republican bill showered nearly half its benefits on households in the top 5% of incomes — those making about $308,000 or more in 2017.

The Democratic bill, by contrast, would send about 70% of its benefits to those earning $91,000 or less — the bottom three-fifths of the nation’s income distribution, according to a new analysis by the Tax Policy Center, a nonpartisan Washington think tank. Benefits for families make up about half the cost of the legislation.

I know who cares about whom.

If the workers believe their own lives are so important, they would work at a job that paid them enough to live on.

If employers believed other's lives are so important, they would pay them a living wage.

If other workers believed their lives are so important, they would argue that they deserve a living wage.

If other workers think poor people are lazy and deserving of scorn and ridicule, they would post things like the above quote.

Or give them the job for the wages that were stated when the perspective employee applied for the job, which indicates that they agreed with the conditions and pay of the position.

If other workers believed their lives are so important, they would argue that they deserve a living wage.

A term that is yet to be defined. Wages don't live.

If other workers think poor people are lazy and deserving of scorn and ridicule, they would post things like the above quote.

If other workers actually do the work while their fellow "workers" sit around and complain, they'd be correct.

That would be great! Just give them the wages they agreed on!
I'm glad we're on the same page there.
And of course you are ALSO upset by the fact that Wage Theft one of the most common and exploitative practices in America stealing

Wouldn't it be GREAT if workers just got the pay that they were entitled and promised?

If you honestly don't know the definition of a "living wage", there is some SIGNIFICANT Dunning-Kruger going on in this conversation

don't even understand this one.

Not sure what you're going on about here.
If a worker applies for a job that is advertised to pay $8 an hour, and then gets hired, why should the new employee start complaining about somehow being cheated?

Uhm. Because they are often not getting paid for their wages. And the complaint process is embarrassingly tilted against the victim (employee).

People don't get "paid for their wages". They get paid for the work they do, or the hours they were clocked in.

Not if you're already earning over $15 / hr

Otherwise you and everyone like you will

DC has a $15/hour minimum wage and plenty of jobs. Many states have minimum wages of more than $12, and a few are on a path to raising their wage to $15, with plenty of jobs.

Peer-county studies that compared relative employment and job creation data in counties with comparable population and economic demographics, often neighboring each other, in states with different minimum wages found little evidence that higher minimum wages cost people jobs.

In terms of real purchasing power, the minimum wage is at one of its lowest points in history. In the 1960s the minimum wage would be north of $12 in today's money, and there were plenty of jobs then.
