  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

    Questions about Orthodoxy

hey there, I was hoping to understand Orthodoxy better by starting a thread to ask questions to the Orthodox community. I'm looking more for those who are a little more seasoned in their walk but I'll take whatever comes. My first question is this, what is the Orthodox position on the gift of...

    I Need For "Salvation"

I have been scouring the web, and mostly the bible for ways I may redeem myself to the lord to reach the eternal heavens. In a society that is not majorly surrounded by athiests, and non-believers in Christianity, and other faiths, it can be rather complicated to interpret, and even connect with...

Though I am not yet catechumen (hopefully by the end of this week praise God), your words and responses to other peoples questions have helped me in this year long struggle...

Eastern Orthodoxy on the wrath of God

please note this thread is posted in The Ancient Way - I am interested in the Eastern Orthodox views on the wrath of God. Others welcome in fellowship and discussion, but please don't debate or post an answer if you don't know the EO teaching - I'm familiar with most others already. :)...

The Nicene Creed: Do we really all believe it?

Here is the Nicene Creed, as broken down in the Site Wide Rules of CF. The Nicene Creed We believe in (Romans 10:8-10; 1John 4:15) ONE God, (Deuteronomy 6:4, Ephesians 4:6) the Father (Matthew 6:9) Almighty, (Exodus 6:3) Maker of Heaven and Earth, (Genesis 1:1) and of all things visible and...

    Help me find the way.

Dear readers, I hope that this letter will find someone on this planet who can help me. I feel I have lived 100 years and I am only 20 years of age. I worry that if I cannot find the answers I seek I will either lose my mind or end my life. I am not saying that for attention...

How to tell my Orthodox family that I am Protestant?

My family is strictly Orthodox. We live somewhere where to be Protestant is equal to be in a sect. I am afraid to tell them (only my mother knows, but she thinks it is a phase and she advised me not to tell, which now, a year later, results in constant fear). Whenever this subject pops up my...

In Light of Mass Prosecution of Orthodox Christians in Egypt

There is an initiative to raise money for a documentary on Coptic Christians and their history, every dollar makes a difference. This is in light of all the recent church bombings and shootings occurring in the past few months in Egypt. Sadly, most are unaware of the Christian minority and their...

New Coptic chant album "Hymns of the Coptic Orthodox Church" released in France

I guess I'm a bit behind the times, but apparently the well-established French record label Inedit has released a collection of Coptic chants. I always get excited to find things like this, because there is very little from our tradition which is released into the wider world (much less than in...

    Videos on Holy Elders

I've found some videos about recent elders and saints that I would like to post from time to time on this thread. I hope you all will find them enjoyable: Here is one about Elder Iakovos of Evia: The subtitles could use some improvement, but they are better than the ones that are automatic...

Can you explain the difference between the denominations? Also can you recommend a church in NYC?

I know that all Eastern Orthodox churches have the same doctrines and beliefs, but are some (in the US) known for being more conservative? More liberal? Which ones celebrate Christmas in January and which ones celebrate Christians in December? Any other quirks? In my area I have access to Greek...

    Question Regarding the Orthodox Church(es)?

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, My name is Matt, and right now I am a Catholic (born and raised) who is considering the possibility of converting to the (Eastern) Orthodox faith. However, even though the answer may be "it isn't relevant", I can't help but bring up a question regarding the...

Which Bible or Bible combo is best for a beginner Orthodox Christian?

I have heard that the Orthodox Church uses the Byzantine-type text for the NT and the LXX for the OT, so for now the Bibles I use is the LXX (Brenton) for the OT and the (N)KJV for just the NT. I have also heard of the OSB when I researched the OSB, I found out that it had commentary saying what...

Are the Sacraments Valid if the priest is a notorious sinner?

If a Catholic priest is found to be a notorious sinner, say a pedophile, when he stands before the Altar, is the Celebration of the Mass valid? Is the Eucharist validly accomplished? I ask this, because some Protestants and other Evangelical Christians seems to think that if the priest is a...

Protestants: Why is Apostolic Succession unimportant to you?

I am looking into Christianity, and in doing so I find it difficult to fathom how someone could be a Christian without being a member of a Church that can trace its faith, teachings, and authority back to the Apostles (like the Orthodox Church or Catholic Church). These Churches to me seem to...

    Some Questions on Orthodox Theology/traditions

A Greek friend invited me to a Greek Orthodox church for Easter this past Saturday evening to show me some of the theology and traditions, and how they differ from mine (Episcopal.) I had really hoped to learn something, but I left the church markedly disappointed on that front. For example, I...
