So digging a little more I can see why the ALA might be ambivalent about Kirk after the stunt he pulled in Hendersonville, Tennessee back in February.
Kirk had set up what was going to be a nice story time with some kids at the Hendersonville Library
>> Emails obtained by the Tennessean indicates concern by Morales about how big the event was becoming.

“Our invitation was sincere to read a book during our story time,” Morales wrote in an email dated Feb. 22, to a Brave Books representative. “We guard that time because it is for small children and not adults. We work hard at not promoting any agendas left or right.” <<

That story time with the little kids evolved into Kirk bringing Duck Dynasty character Missy Robinson and anti-trans activist Riley Gaines. The activities were expanded from not just Kirk reading story time to the kids, but filming of promotional commercials including one where Gaines giving her anti-trans talking points (see the article above for a clip of the filming).

There was also a series of a bomb threats from a guy in Connecticut.

The crowd apparently would have overwhelmed the building resulting in children sitting in bookshelf aisles. The library has suggested moving the event to a larger venue like a church, but apparently the mayor wanted it held at the library (the library falls under the jurisdiction of the mayor).

0:40
found it but that's great so what's your
0:43
new book about why read it at libraries
0:45
what's the response been let's talk
0:46
about them so I I wrote this new
0:49
children's book and it's it's all about
0:50
teaching kids biblical wisdom and the
0:52
fruit of the spirit you know love joy
0:54
peace patience kindness goodness
0:56
gentleness and I wanted to read it at
0:58
public libraries because story hours are
1:00
all their age now
1:03
and I was denied by over 50 woke
1:06
libraries that previously held drag
1:08
queen story hours so crazy so if you
1:12
want to read about wokeness as a man
1:16
with a beard in fishnet stockings and
1:18
heels to little toddlers about gender
1:22
and sexuality and other topics uh that
1:25
come on but if it's about love joy
1:28
kindness and loving God it's a hard no
1:31
and what we did was push back on this
1:35
because we figured that would be the
1:36
response from these libraries and we
1:38
wrote a letter I gave him a free copy of
1:40
the book and said uh I think you'll
1:42
agree these are the values we want for
1:43
all of our kids but if you persist in
1:45
the Discrimination because of my
1:46
sincerely held Viewpoint about loving
1:49
God and others I'm prepared to exercise
1:51
my constitutional rights we immediately
1:54
got emails with links to sign up for
1:56
story hours at these libraries and when
1:59
we went to Indianapolis which was the
2:00
first one who said that our community is
2:03
not interested in your messaging we had
2:05
over 2500 wow parents and children show
2:09
up and overwhelm that library on all six
2:12
floors out the front door and down the
2:14
street and it was a similar response in
2:18
Scarsdale New York and then also in
2:20
Nashville and Fayetteville and Los
2:22
Angeles and other places where they said
2:25
their messaging at that library and my
2:27
messaging were not aligned not true
2:30
according to the citizen of those cities
2:34
yeah well and I I kind of understand if
2:37
I mean not that it would be a good thing
2:38
but if they just didn't allow people to
2:40
come in with outside beliefs or whatever
2:42
to come into these libraries it'd be one
2:44
thing like we well we just don't have
2:45
people do that like we have our own
2:46
people do the library thing with the
2:48
fact that they allowed drag queens to do
2:49
it and then they were like oh you're you
2:51
know you get this guy that's coming in
2:52
and you're a Christian or whatever you
2:54
know it's it's so bizarre that that
2:56
point of hook well one of the
2:58
interesting things that happened during
3:00
this this tour and we're going to about
3:02
15 20 cities uh to those public
3:04
libraries uh before uh July because
3:08
we've got a big deal coming up in July
3:10
um we were in Fayetteville Tennessee and
3:13
we went there and had about 800 moms and
3:16
dads and kids standing out in the rain
3:18
in the cold with umbrellas waiting to
3:21
get in we were gathered around the flag
3:23
outside the library singing the National
3:24
Anthem and God bless America we were
3:27
praying in Jesus name and we were
3:29
talking about solutions to the nation's
3:30
problems and the librarian inside was so
3:34
against us being there that when we
3:36
finally got in to do our work he was
3:38
kicking cabinets and having his staff
3:39
play loud music and dropping books so
3:42
that we couldn't continue and this so
3:45
upset the opposite of what a librarian
3:47
you're supposed to be quiet and and he
3:51
said
3:52
and you know the community got together
3:54
to get together with the board of
3:57
directors at the library and fired him

It absolutely is. You know that all of these people have a place to go to do this very thing pretty much anytime they want and would be welcomed with open arms and absolutely no one would give a care in the world. There are these big buildings with crosses on top on just about every street corner in America, but they need to use a public library? So, yeah, it's absolutely a stunt.

I view it as just irreverent.

I notice a peculiar American thing, that many Protestant Christians in the US don't understand what reverence really is anymore. They've lost the sense of deference and dignity. Christianity for them has been reduced to political and cultural branding. And Mr. Cameron is just expressing his peculiar "brand".

I dislike the use of religion and prayer as a publicity stunt to advance a political agenda. I don't like when conservative Christians or liberal Christians do it.
What political agenda would that be, exercising 1st Amendment rights?

Ok…? And…?

I mean, I get that the Washington Times (thanks to its founding by a self-appointed Christian prophet and cult leader) skews to the right, but an article about a library hosting a public event with community interest seems a bit like writing an article about how amazing it is that the sun rose today.

With friends like these, Jesus doesn't need enemies. :(

It's a veiled attack on the LGBT community and their rights.

I dislike the use of children in gay story hour publicity stunts.

It's not a publicity stunt. It's entertainment. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean others don't find it entertaining.

Kirk Cameron does things to be provocative. He isn't seeking to live in peace, he's seeking to stir controversy and noteriety for his political-religious views.

It's a veiled attack on the LGBT community and their rights, and brainwashing children with bigotry.
What rights have been violated. How is teaching children Christian values, bigotry?

Please. Enough hiding behind religious freedom. We wouldn't welcome an Asatru group at a library with open arms and talk about how the gods love white-skinned racial purity. So why should fundamentalist Christians expect any different when it comes to promoting bigotry in the name of religion?

That's not what drag queen story hour involves. And if you think it does, I don't think we are even dealing with the same reality anymore. The body is more than clothing. If you can't see the human being underneath, frankly you've failed at one of the Bible's core teachings.

Oh, so you're a mind reader?

Even if I believed that you could actually read his mind; and even if I believed that you were actually telling the truth; so what?

Isn't he within his rights?

Christians don't reflexively appeal to their rights, but what serves the good of their neighbor. Anything less is sub-Christian. Stirring controversy is not seeking peace.

LOL. I don't hide behind it. I exercise it. It's like muscle. If you don't exercise it; you lose it.

That's not a Christian attitude. Do you not understand what meekness is?

Teaching Christian values to society, is good for society.

Thank Yah that left extremists haven't sqaushed our rights to serve Yah.

Teaching children perversion isn’t entertaining.

Drag story time, however, is wildly entertaining on a multitude of levels.

It's arrogant for Cameron and his fans to think he's better at doing that, than the hundreds of thousands of actual pastors out there, doing it in churches every sunday, who aren't profaning the religion in the process.

The planned "persecution" just gets more interesting the more I dig.

>> The library said on Thursday that the anticipated attendance has increased past the library’s capacity, meaning they’ll be unable to host the event.

“Initially, the organizers of the event reported 20 attendees to library officials. On Tuesday, the Library learned that event organizers are now expecting over 300 people, a number that far exceeds any meeting room capacity within the Huntsville-Madison County Library System,” the library said in a statement on Thursday.

Madison Public Library said that it explored options to make the event happen, consulting the Madison City Police Department, the Madison City Fire Marshal and City officials. It said that after discussing logistics with the library and event organizer, the Madison City Police Department and the Madison City Fire Marshal recommended the event be held at an alternate location. <<

This is Alabama, not Wisconsin by the way. Of course "First Liberty" is threatening to sue.

>> The law firm said in the letter if the library doesn’t respond by noon on Friday, confirming organizers may utilize the Madison Public Library to host ‘See You at the Library’ on Saturday, they are prepared to take the matter to court. Dys wrote that the cancellation of the event violates his client’s civil rights and discriminates against his client’s religious viewpoint and content.

In short, whether over concerns of security or capacity, you have censored our
client,
” Dys said. <<

They don't care about public safety or capacity issues. They think they can do whatever they want.
