  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

God was against human sacrifice but he sacrificed his Son?

I just had a Bible study last night on John 14:25-15:4.

One verse struck me as basically saying the same thing that you are saying that Jesus laid down his life willingly and no one takes His life from Him. The verse is here:

John 14:30
"the ruler of the world is coming. He has no power over me."

JD Vance Honors the Gospel during Visit to Billy Graham Library, Says ‘The Gospel Belongs to Everyone’

It is available yet not possessed by all. The gospel is forgiveness, redemption and eternal life.
Phil 3:11
if by any means I may attain unto the resurrection from the dead. 12 Not that I have already obtained, or am already made perfect: but I press on, if so be that I may lay hold on that for which also I was laid hold on by Christ Jesus. 13 Brethren, I count not myself [b]yet to have laid hold: but one thing I do, forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before.
Yet.
What I am trying to say is, the story is told to any who will listen. But, not everyone will take hold or receive it. So, it does not belong to them.

What I said above may be a near perfect example of, "Straining at a gnat."
Semantics? Perhaps.

How old was David when he fought Goliath?

You needed to be 20 years or older to join the army (Numbers 1:3).

Saul's servants knew about David in 1 Samuel 16:

18 One of the servants answered, “I have seen a son of Jesse of Bethlehem who knows how to play the lyre. He is a brave man and a warrior. He speaks well and is a fine-looking man. And the LORD is with him.”
Saul hired David as a musician and not as a soldier probably because he was under 20 of age.

David was the youngest of 8 sons of Jesse (1 Samuel 17:12–14). David's three oldest brothers were Saul's soldiers in 1 Samuel 17:

13a The three oldest sons of Jesse had followed Saul to the battle.
Later, David volunteered to fight Goliath, but

33 Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him, for you are but a youth, and he has been a man of war from his youth.”
He was old enough to marry Saul's daughter (1Sa 18:27).

2 Samuel 5:4 mentioned that David was 30 years old when he became king, which happened after Saul's death, some years after the fight with Goliath.

David was probably in his late teens when he fought Goliath. I'd guess 18.

LOVE your neighbor as yourself and related Confucian teachings

Moses, in the 15th century BCE, mentioned the Golden Rule in Le 19:

18b You shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.
In China, Confucius in the 5th century BCE mentioned in the Analects, 15:23: 己所不欲,勿施於人; What you do not wish for yourself, do not do to others. This is sometimes called the Silver Rule.

What is the motivation?

Confucius spoke universally on the fundamental virtue of 仁 or Benevolence, emphasizing kindness and humanity towards others.

The Golden Rule is active and positive, while the Silver Rule is passive and negative.

There is a more active one in Analects, 6:30: 己欲立而立人,己欲達而達人; If you want to stand yourself, help others to stand. If you want to reach your goal, help others to reach their goals.

Still, it is not as selfless as the Golden Rule which is based on love.

There is a more general proverb: 施恩莫望報; Perform good deeds without expectation of reward.

Still, 愛 "love" was not a central term in Confucian teachings.

Mk 12:

28b “Which commandment is the most important of all?” 29 Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
The English word "love" appears 551 times in NIV and 232 times in ESV which is a more literal translation.

Survey: US Catholics have little to no idea what ‘synodality’ is

I don't know what "synodality" is either.

As far as I'm concerned it's an eccelesiastical buzzword.

It hasn't been explained very well. And I suspect a lot of Australian Catholics would be no better informed than I am or our US counterparts are.
My thoughts exactly.

Nothin' Sweeter by TobyMac and Jon Reddick

There's been so many times I got it so wrong
And a couple that I got just right
I've seen the view from the top of the world
And the sorrow by the bitter graveside

I've seen some prayers get answered
And I've heard my share of no's
But there's never been a moment that You let me go

I've been uptown, I've been downtown
In the spotlight, I've been broke down
I've seen so much, might not know much
But there ain't nothin' sweeter than His love
In the good times, through the hard times
Filled my pockets full of sunshine
I've seen so much of the good stuff
But there ain't nothin' sweeter than His love

I graduated from the school o' hard knocks
But there's some lessons that I haven't quite learned
One thing I know is You've been so kind to me
Sweeter than a man could ever deserve

'Cause we got that love from up above
And if it's all we ever get, we got enough (we got enough)
Better hold on tight, y'all, no matter what
We got that 'never gonna leave us' kinda love (oh-oh-oh-oh)

I've been uptown, I've been downtown
In the spotlight, I've been broke down
I've seen so much, might not know much
But there ain't nothin' sweeter than His love
In the good times, through the hard times
Filled my pockets full of sunshine
I've seen so much of the good stuff
But there ain't nothin' sweeter than His love
Nothin' sweeter, no (no, no, no)
No, there ain't nothin' sweeter than His love

That sunset on those Tennessee hills got me counting a blessing or two
Those moments in time, the best in my life, they all come from You (You, You, You)
I've been uptown, I've been downtown
In the spotlight, I've been face down
I've seen so much, might not know much
But there ain't nothin' sweeter than His love
In the good times, through the hard times
Filled my pockets full of sunshine
I've seen so much of the good stuff
But there ain't nothin' sweeter than His love

Ain't nothin' sweeter, nothin' sweeter, no
Ain't nothin' sweeter, nothin' sweeter, no
Ain't nothin' sweeter, nothin' sweeter
No, there ain't nothin' sweeter than His love

Trump Warns Hostile Migrants Have Machine Guns Beyond 'Military Scope'

There's a recent report about the growing tension between Venezuelan and local gangs in our city. The piece included former and active members who spoke candidly about the problem. They acknowledged the severity of violence and likened them to MS-13. Crime is rising and a standoff is imminent and they're admitting that.

It isn't a hoax. Gang members crossed the border.

If any man thirst

Brother Zoidar,

Good question that really hits at the heart and soul of who is saved and who is not saved, but think they are, which appears to pertain to many professing Christians; for many will say in that Day, "Lord, Lord". . . But he will say to them 'I never knew you,' 'depart from me you workers of iniquity.'

The only faith by which we are "born again" includes repentance, and a firm decision to turn from serving sin to serving God by following Lord Jesus into a sanctified life of righteousness and love, just as Lord Jesus taught us by example and by teaching.

The Faith,” as the Scriptures teach, is not a work that earns our salvation; rather, faith includes repentance, and is the sinner’s plea to God for the salvation offered to him by the Gospel so that he may be justified and born again of the Spirit before one work is ever done.

Luke 5:32 (WEB) I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

The sinner is redeemed and saved from the guilt, punishment, and slavery to sin that crushes and burdens him, so that he may have fellowship with God, serving him, that was lost by sin - the Rebirth. And this all starts with godly sorrow over our sins.

Luke 18:13-14 (WEB) 13 But the tax collector, standing far away, wouldn’t even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

2 Corinthians 7:10 (WEB) 10 For godly sorrow produces repentance to salvation, which brings no regret. But the sorrow of the world produces death.
  • We receive eternal life by "believing" in Lord Jesus because of the Gospel of Christ (John 3:16).
  • "Believing" includes "repentance" to receive forgiveness of sins and to be saved. (Luke 24:46-47; Acts 17:30; 2 Corinthians 7:10)
  • A genuine "repentance" must lead to "conversion" to be saved, which is a firm decision to renounce serving sin to instead turn to God, serving him in righteousness. (Acts 3:19; Acts 20:20-21; Acts 26:19-20; Romans 6:1-6)
  • We serve God by following Lord Jesus into a sanctified life of righteousness and love to be saved (Matthew 28:19-20; Matthew 10:38; John 10:26-29; John 15:10; 2 Timothy 2:19; Acts 11:26; 1 John 2:3-6; Hebrews 5:9).
  • Faith, therefore, is manifested in a commitment to a sanctified life onto God by following Lord Jesus in righteousness and love to be cleansed from all sins we commit in weakness and to be saved (1 Thessalonians 4:1-8; Romans 6:19-22; 1 John 1:5-7; Acts 26:15-20).
Therefore, by faith, as expressed, we commit to walk in that new life of Salvation that Christ purchased for us – a life by which we repent and renounce slaving for sin that condemned us, and commit to follow Lord Jesus in obedience, as he instructed us, to possess this salvation – to follow in His steps into a new life.

Matthew 10:38 (WEB) 38 He who doesn’t take his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me.

Hebrews 5:9 Being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him.

Romans 6:2-4 (WEB) 2 May it never be! We who died to sin, how could we live in it any longer? 3 Or don’t you know that all we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him through baptism into death, so that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we also might walk in newness of life.

By this faith commitment we possess the new birth of the Spirit.

The Spirit indwell, seals, and leads to a new life (the new birth) of righteousness and love to all who manifest their faith in repentance and a commitment to obedience to Christ, just as the Scriptures teach us.

Acts 2:38 (WEB) Peter said to them: Repent [change of mind and purpose], and be Baptized [a public confession to die to the old life of sin, and rise to a new life, following Lord Jesus: 1 Peter 3:21], every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 5:32
(WEB) 32 We are his witnesses of these things; and so also is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.

John 14:15-16 (WEB) 15 If you love me, keep my commandments. 16 I will pray to the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, that he may be with you forever: 17 the Spirit of truth

John 14:21
(WEB) One who has my commandments and keeps them, that person is one who loves me. One who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him, and will reveal myself to him.

John 14:23If any man loves me, he will keep my word. My Father will love him, and we will come to him, and make our home with him.”

According to the above Scriptures, by what "faith" will the Spirit indwell to seal and lead us to a new life of salvation - the New Birth?

We are "Born Again" by this Gospel Faith.

This is "The Faith" in Lord Jesus by which we "drink" of the "water of life" (The Spirit) so that the Spirit gives this Eternal Life in us - the New Birth.

As one continues in "The Faith" he continues to "drink" or "sow" to the Spirit, and this is the only faith by which the Spirit {{{gives}}} the person who believes eternal life welling up inside of him.

Galatians 6:7-9 Paul warns the Galatian Christians 7 Do not be deceived. God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. 8 For he who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption. But he who sows to the Spirit will {{{from the Spirit}}} reap Eternal Life. 9 Let {{{us}}} not be weary in doing good, for {{{we}}} will reap in due season, {{{if we}}} do not give up.

Therefore, a Christian is admonished to remain in the same faith he had by which he received the Spirit so that the Spirit continues to give him Eternal Life welling up inside of him. The one who "drinks" (lives, walks, sows) the Spirit (River of Life) is the true believer in whom the Spirit wells up inside of him unto eternal life.
Thanks Setst for laying out Scripture to me. At the time I don't have much to comment on. Christ love!

What does the Catholic Church teach about embryos?

According to Donum Vitae: Human embryos obtained in vitro are human beings and subjects with rights: their dignity and right to life must be respected from the first moment of their existence. It is immoral to produce human embryos destined to be exploited as disposable “biological material”.
That's EXACTLY what IVF does, therefore, it's wrong, according to Moral theology.

“For Your Good”

As a Christian, do you believe that “All things work together for good to those who love God” (Ro 8:28). This means that no matter what occurs in your life, God is using it for your benefit. The primary issue in a believer’s life is always that which concerns the strengthening of one’s faith! One way or another, even when we do not see it “working,” God causes it to be an advantage “to” us.

If you’re reborn, there’s nothing that you have to allow to “trouble” you (Jn 14:1, 27), because of the Ro 8:28 promise. What we may see as a problem is in reality for your “good.” Thus there is much truth in the phrase, "it’s all good”—if you’re saved. Regardless of what transpires in the life of a believer, it will truly be a benefit in one fashion or another. Even if we think God only keeps this promise when we are good, He still honors what He has said—it’s His Word; and with God, He always sees believers as “good,” because He knows they always want to “please” Him, as He “works” this in them.

The Father uses everything to teach believers His desires for them. All things are lessons and transpire according to how God wants them to construe to us. We must understand that this “promise” is to all who are saved, regardless of one’s level of maturity in Christ. It’s just a matter of time when a believer matures in Him (Eph 4:15), as God is always causing the believer to “will and to do of His good pleasure” (Phl 2:13).

Believers can see everything as blessings, because God ensures they receive benefit from everything in His way—“For all things are for your sakes” (2Co 4:15).

St. Therese podcast

A new season of a “Catholic Classics” podcast is inviting people to encounter St. Thérèse of Lisieux by listening to her world-famous autobiography, “Story of a Soul,” beginning on her feast day, Oct. 1.

Pope Francis warns against ‘pernicious ideologies’ in Luxembourg

Humanity needs to be motivated by spiritual values if it is to avoid being thrown into dangerous exploits and useless massacres, Pope Francis said.

The world, even in Europe, is seeing a return of “rifts and enmities that, instead of being resolved on the basis of mutual goodwill, negotiation and diplomatic efforts, are resulting in open hostilities, leading to destruction and death,” the pope said in Luxembourg during a meeting with authorities, members of the diplomatic corps and local representatives. It was the first day of a four-day trip Sept. 26-29 to the small nation and nearby Belgium.

“It seems that the human heart does not always remember the past and periodically goes astray and returns to the tragic path of war,” he said in his speech at the meeting held at the city’s main administrative building, the Cercle Cité.

“To heal this dangerous syndrome, which causes nations to become seriously ill and risks throwing them into exploits that bring with them immense human costs and further useless massacres, we need to raise our gaze upward,” he said, calling on citizens and leaders to be “motivated by noble and profound spiritual values.”

Legalized Sports Gambling is a Mistake

The prediction is that in 2024, gamblers will place 24 BILLION in bets on NFL games
alone.

Apparently, Americans have forgotten that the Italian Mafia made a lot of its
criminal income on illegal sports gambling.

Just as those sttes which legalized all sorts of illegal drugs, are now
finding out that the resulting mess of addiction, is not worth it, so too
I think that states that legalize sports gambling, will suddently find out that
ADDICTION to gambling is a terrible thing.
The Italian Mafia was hit when sports betting became legal. They make their money off promotion
of illegal activities, not legally regulated activities.
