Creating a Humanzee

Scientifically speaking, creating a humanzee would be no different from how we've created Ligers and Mules. So why haven't we created a humanzee yet, knowing it's entirely possible and super easy?

Many say it's an issue of morality. But why would it be, considering a humanzee would be neither human, nor chimp. What would be a worst or best case scenario in this situation? Being the eternal optimist that I am, I envision a friendly pet-like companion, like a dog, but much smarter. It's not like it would be in a constant state of pain, like some kind of groaning Frankenstein - nature doesn’t allow animals to live in perpetual pain. Perhaps they could even be trained to do our work for us? Like picking fruit in the fields? Or factory work, or other jobs humans don't particularly like doing? For thousands of years we've been using horses in similar ways - I don't see how a humanzee would be any different.

I thought Biden was a Humanzee?

“Brethren, What Shall We Do?’...

“Brethren, what shall we do?” (Acts 2: 37) Such was the response of “devout men from every nation under heaven” (Acts 2:5) to St. Peter’s Pentecost Discourse. The Holy Scriptures tell us that “that they were cut to the heart” (Acts 2:37). St. Peter had proclaimed to them the truth of the Redemptive Incarnation with these words:

Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves know — this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. But God raised Him up, having loosed the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.… This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured out this which you see and hear.… Let all the house of Israel therefore know assuredly that God has made Him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified (Acts 2:22-24, 32-33, 36).

Witnessing the transformation of the Apostles by the descent of the Holy Spirit and hearing the preaching of St. Peter, the devout men understood that the event which they were witnessing and the enduring reality which it manifested had changed their lives forever. They recognized the abiding victory of Jesus, “Lord and Christ” (Acts 2:36), over sin and death through the outpouring of His spirit, God the Holy Spirit, upon the Church, into the hearts of the faithful members of the Church, Christ’s Mystical Body.

To their heartfelt question, “Brethren, what shall we do?” addressed to the Apostles, St. Peter, without hesitation and without equivocation, responded:

Archaeologists find ancient moat fortifying biblical Jerusalem

In a groundbreaking discovery, archaeologists solved a long-standing mystery about Jerusalem’s defenses. The findings are consistent with biblical descriptions of the city’s topography.

In a groundbreaking discovery, archaeologists have solved a long-standing mystery about Jerusalem’s ancient defenses. Recent excavations in the City of David have revealed a massive moat that once fortified the Temple Mount and the King’s Palace, shedding new light on the fortifications of biblical Jerusalem.

For more than 150 years, the full extent of Jerusalem’s northern fortifications remained elusive. But thanks to recent work in the Givati parking lot adjacent to the Old City walls, researchers from the Israel Antiquities Authority(IAA) and Tel Aviv University have uncovered a moat that divided the City of David, separating the ruling Acropolis from the southern residential areas.

How the Ancient Christians Can Give You Hope and Teach You to Spread the Faith

The Church grew at a steady rate of 40% per decade,’ says Mike Aquilina, ‘and all that happened at a time when the practice of the faith was a capital crime.’

In times like these, it’s easy to despair about evangelization in the modern world. But a new Ignatius Press book by Mike Aquilina, Rabbles, Riots, and Ruins: Twelve Ancient Cities and How They Were Evangelized, not only offers some much-needed hope when thinking about evangelizing today’s culture but also serves as a guide on how to go about it.

The Register caught up with the book’s author at his home in Pittsburgh and asked if Christian hope can persist amid the despair of modern Western cities.

Children of pioneering NFP doctor follow in his footsteps

(OSV News) — In 1968, Pope St. Paul VI issued an encyclical that would change the course of Dr. Thomas Hilgers’ life.

The encyclical, “Humanae Vitae,” was an unexpected and unpopular papal condemnation of artificial contraception. But Hilgers, then a medical student, quickly embraced the teaching and committed himself to improving fertility awareness-based methods for family planning, also known as natural family planning or NFP.

“When ‘Humanae Vitae’ came out, most people rejected (it),” Dr. Teresa Hilgers, Thomas Hilgers’ daughter, told OSV News. “My dad felt like it called to him.”

The neighborhood and REO Speedwagon

Someday soon we really will fly away!

He shall fly away as a dream, and shall not be found... Job 20:8
The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away. - Psalms 90:10
We will fly away to Jesus in Heaven, and yes, I have used Psalm 90:10 in a devotional, when discussing human lifespans. :) Remember that hymn, "I Will Fly Away" covered by Jars of Clay? It was a good cover.

Trump Organization's accounting firm says 10 years of financial statements are unreliable

Judge getting snippier.

'You were warned': Judge reprimands Trump's lawyers in New York AG's $250M fraud case

"When I first heard those arguments, I thought that was a joke," said Judge Arthur Engoron, who added that he has repeatedly ruled on and been upheld on some of the arguments rehashed by defense.

Engoron did sanction the lawyers $7,500, but some of them are fighting it, saying Engoron improperly imputed Alina Habba's nuttiness to them.

The Transfiguration

I am a new follower in Christ and am trying wrap my mind around one particular concept in the scripture and I could be way off with my interpretation. In the Gospels they speak of the Transfiguration of Christ. I understand what it was and what happened. However, my question is does the Transfiguration count as a sign that Jesus is the Lord and Son of God? There are many instances where He preaches that a sign will not be delivered because of the wickedness and sinful nature of the current generation and they don't deserve a sign. I could be way off in this thought but wanted some opinions. Thank you all.
I always found this quote rather interesting:

2 Peter 1:16 For we did not follow cleverly devised tales when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty. 17 For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, such an utterance as this was made to Him by the Majestic Glory, “This is My beloved Son with whom I am well-pleased”— 18 and we ourselves heard this utterance made from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain. 19 So we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts.

When Peter was teaching Christians about believing him, Peter didn't refer back to seeing Christ raised from the dead or His ascension into Heaven. Instead, Peter referred back to the Transfiguration as witnessing the majesty of Christ. So I would say yes, the Transfiguration is a sign of the majesty of Christ. But Christ choose only to reveal this sign to three apostles, James, John, and Peter. And then He commanded them not to talk about it until after He was raised from the dead.

Just some advice, don't get wrapped up in signs. Signs are often quickly forgotten (e.g. after Israel passed through the Red Sea they began to gumble against God). The greatest sign that God has given us in these end days is His Word and Spirit. Study the Word and pray the Spirit will grant you wisdom and understanding. Trust the Word even if you don't understand it. I've found that many things I didn't understand as a new Christian became clearer 30, 40, or 50 years later.

RAN Mental Health Working Group meeting - The attraction of conspiracy theories and disinformation: A mental health perspective, Bucharest 30-31 May 2

Details

Publication date 29 July 2024
  • Mental health issues

Description

The belief in conspiracy theories is not a new phenomenon, but it continues to pose a key challenge for the prevention and countering of violent extremism (P/CVE) in Europe, since they play vital roles within extremist ideologies, recruitment and radicalisation. In order to efficiently plan P/CVE interventions, it is necessary to understand how people are attracted to conspiracy narratives and the factors that can make a person more vulnerable to the attraction of conspiracy narratives, such as mental (ill) health. To do so, the RAN Mental Health Working Group invited mental health and other relevant professionals to meet in Bucharest on 30 and 31 May 2024.
The meeting’s outcomes are as follows:
  • A conspiracy theory is an explanatory belief that “they” conspire in secret to harm “us”. Here, “they” are, e.g., national governments, foreign nations, minority groups, companies, secret service agencies, etc.
  • The belief in conspiracy theories can be seen throughout human history. However, in current times, social media makes them spread faster and makes it easier to reach a large audience.
  • Conspiracy theories thrive in times of crisis and social upheaval (e.g. economic recessions, revolutions, wars, natural disasters, terrorist attacks). Also, a personal crisis can lead a person to believe in conspiracy theories (e.g. losing a job, or divorcing).
  • They can lead to violence when there is a perception of imminent, significant threat (threat control override symptoms) to oneself or close environment, strengthening the belief that action is urgently needed to remove the imminent threat (i.e. violence is self-defence); belief that one has special power and duty to remove threat; tunnel vision: deep immersion in narrow information and no counterinformation; cohesive group, group think and normalisation.
  • Although most people who believe in conspiracy theories do not have a pathology, some mental health disorders can create a heightened vulnerability to conspiratorial beliefs. For (mental health) practitioners it is important to understand and mitigate the vulnerability that a mental disorder creates to extremist conspiratorial narratives.
This paper summarises the main takeaways of the discussion, including the description of conspiracy theories and in what way they can be harmful, the most common themes across extremist narratives and how they can be related to mental (ill) health. This is followed by some general recommendations, a description of four different cases from practice and a description of a relevant practice.

A coup, fake signatures and deepfakes are the latest conspiracy theories about 2024

President Biden’s decision to bow out of the 2024 election followed weeks of pressure from Democrats concerned about his age and ability to win and serve another four years. But conspiracy theorists, right-wing influencers and even some Republican politicians immediately cast Biden’s resignation from the campaign as evidence of something more sinister.

The flurry of unverified rumors, speculation, and conspiracy theories comes as people are reeling from an onslaught of high-stakes political upheaval, from the assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump on July 13 to Biden’s withdrawal from the race eight days later.

On the most extreme end, Charlie Kirk of the conservative youth organization Turning Point USA and far-right activist Laura Loomersuggested, without evidence, that Biden may be dying or already dead.

Others, including billionaire hedge fund boss Bill Ackman, raised doubts over the president’s letter announcing his decision, baselessly suggesting his signature wasn’t really his.

MISLEADING TESTIMONY FROM FBI DIRECTOR CHRIS WRAY:

Director Wray just testified . . . that the FBI questions asked below were only asked by an outside contractor for the FBI's Security Division who is no longer with the FBI. But Director Wray is hiding the ball on this.

The FBI knows better than to ask political questions when interviewing. This is outrageous.

German Zoo Honors Little Lynx’s Wish to be Free After Repeat Escape Attempts

Despite being brought up in the Nuremberg Zoo a young Carpathian lynx named Chapo was born to be wild.

Respecting his wishes, the German zookeepers abandoned their intention to raise him to eventually contribute his genes to a vital captive breeding program and release him into the wilds of Germany.

Now residing in the forests of Saxony, he joins a steadily growing population of wild lynx across Germany and Switzerland that are slinking back across the acreage they prowled long ago.

The Carpathian lynx is a subspecies of the Eurasian lynx, which while being listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List, is nevertheless extinct across large swaths of its former habitat.

Botanists Vote to Remove Apartheid Slur from Plant Species Names in Africa

Over 200 plants will have their species name changed to remove an offensive South African apartheid-era racial slur after the results of a vote from the International Botanical Congress.

In a thoroughly debated session in the recent meeting in Madrid, the vote passed 351 to 205 to rename all current botanical species with the species name caffra to affra.

Margherita Bassi, writing for Smithsonian, explainsthat this means the coast coral tree Erythrina caffrawill be called Erythrina affra and that the decision marks the first time taxonomists have voted in favor of changing offensive scientific names.

Trees are just Awesome: A NEW reason

Interesting. There are some nuances:
  • The authors are more cautious than the cover article implies. "Our findings indicate that the climate benefits of tropical and temperate forest protection and reforestation may be greater than previously assumed." Emphasis added.
  • The lower stems of trees are net methane emitters.
  • To arrive at their conclusion they made certain assumptions. (See the paper for details) These appear to be reasonable, but were not - as far as I could see - validated by further experiment.
  • Different trees have different capacities for uptake and while there are some suggestive data it is insufficient to be edifnitive. This has important implications for species selection in reforestation projects.

Grace and Truth by Jesus Christ

The Gospel begins with Jesus as Creator! Then moves on to Jesus as Savior

John 1:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. 8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. 9 That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.
10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.
11 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. 12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: 13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

The Word Becomes Flesh

14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
I agree God became flesh, blood, and bone.
