D'varim (Deuteronomy) first 3 chapters: Final discourses of Moshe

Torah Study: “D’varim” (Words) DEUTERONOMY 1:1-3:22…

The word "Deuteronomy" comes from the Greek words "Deuter" and "Nomo" (Second or repetition and "law") Not that there is a different "law" from what was received on Mt. Sinai, it is the same, yet a repetition of the same, reminding the Children of Israel of what they received from God 40 years ago.

We begin the final book of the original five books of the Torah, in which Moshe wrote down all the statutes, commandments, precepts, details, and other instructions that Adonai dictated to him to record. We must remember that Israel received the first 10 commandments directly from the mouth of Adonai, written down in stone, and given to the people, as a form of “Ketubah” or “marriage contract. Later, Adonai called Moshe back up to the mountain, and there, He dictated the rest of the Torah, the remaining 603 commandments, which Moshe wrote down on scrolls.

603 were written down by Moshe, yet dictated by Adonai, and 10 were dictated and written by YHVH himself. All in all, we must conclude that ALL the TORAH comes from YHVH, whether directly or indirectly written. This book of Deuteronomy is the last. Moshe began writing it, and it was probably finished by Yehoshuah (Joshua) or another leader.

The book recounts the travels and experiences that “Am Yisrael” undertook and endured over 40 years. Moshe retells the experience somewhat as a father would relate to his son. Let’s say that father and son travel across the USA for 6 months, then, perhaps 10 years later, the father would remind the son of their trip by remembering their “experiences” “Remember son, the time when we were traveling through Texas and, well, you insisted in exploring that abandoned house, even when I said it would NOT be a good idea…….”

The father tells both the good experiences and the bad experiences, the times when the son obeyed and the times when the son disobeyed. Moshe is doing the same thing. This is similar to last week’s Bible study, “Masei” (journeys), in which Moshe relates the journeys of Israel.

An interesting midrash is the difference and similarity between two words; “D’varim” (words) and “D’vorim” (bees) One could say that the words that Moshe spoke to the Israelites were like the “stings of bees” and after giving this message, a little later on, Moshe went up Mt. Pisgah a died, just like when a bee stings, it leaves the stinger in the victim and dies. One could also say that the words that Moses spoke to the Children of Israel were also like "bee stings" to himself, like a saddened father who has to tell it "like it is" to a disobedient and rebellious son.

What can we learn from the beginning of D’varim? Are we mature enough to receive rebuke? From elders? From others who are in authority? When a believer or even a non-believer is rebuked, it is for his or her good, either to bring that person to the knowledge of Messiah Yeshua, or to turn that person from error to walk in harmony with the Torah.

Moshe tells the people the words of Adonai: “YHVH your Elohim spoke to us in Horeb, saying, 'You have dwelt long enough in this mountain…turn you and take your journey…. (1:6)

It seems that “Am Yisrael”(The People of Israel) was in their “comfort zone”. They were at Mt. Horeb. Perhaps they wanted to stay right there, yet it was NOT the promised land. It was where they received the Torah, it was where they received instruction, but now they have to go to where Adonai wanted them to be.

The Hebrew word for "turn" in 1:6, is "P'nu" from the root word/verb "Pana." It means to "face and turn towards...with a definite purpose. The Israelites received their instruction (Torah) at Horeb; now they would have to put it into practice. This describes the whole learning institution. We go to college and sit under the instruction of professors of Medicine, Law, dentistry, mechanics, engineering, Bible studies, etc... Once we graduate, we need to put into practice what we have learned. With God's Word, we never STOP learning; there is always something new we didn't see before. We need to put our learning (understanding) into practice (wisdom).

It is interesting that the word “Horeb” is written without a “vav”. The word “Horeb” in Hebrew has only three letters: “Chet,” “Resh,” and “Beit”. These are the same letters that spell out the word “Sword,” which is “Cherev”. So we have “Chorev” and “Cherev”. The only difference is the vowels “o” and “e”. Is there a “remez” here? A symbolism? The sages say that in a way, Moshe is telling the people; “You have received the Torah at “Chorev” now, continue towards the Promised Land, the Land of Canaan, and put into practice the Torah. If you disobey, a curse will fall upon you and the “Cherev” (the Sword) will pursue you. So, it is either “Obedience” which you learned from the Torah at “Chorev” …or…the “Cherev” will destroy you for “disobedience”.

We could also look at the two words in another way. The Torah came down to "Horeb" to be given to Israel, and amid the Torah, there was a "Cherev" (Sword). The Torah or the Bible is the "Sword of the LORD." Do we know how to use it?

Now, the Israelites were right at the border of Moab and Canaan; the Jordan River separated the two nations. It was time to leave their “comfort zone” and “cross over” and conquer the pagan peoples, and lay claim to the land! They had fought giants before, you know, the bigger they are, the harder they fall, especially if Adonai “falls” them.

Remember that it all starts in Egypt (Mitzraim) the land of “restriction”, Moshe leads them out, symbolizing a sort of Messiah, leading them to Mt Sinai, they receive the Torah, for 40 years they undergo instruction, go through both “good times” and “bad times” sometimes, “very bad times” when YHVH chastised and killed many of them for disobedience and rebellion. Yet now, it is time for the promise to be fulfilled, the “Promised Land.”

We go through the same thing in our lives. We start out being liberated from our “Egypt,” we are liberated from the “lost world and the ways of the lost” by accepting Yeshua as our Messiah and LORD. We grow in faith, in spiritual maturity, or…perhaps fail in our relationship with YHVH, going through valleys and dark places, yet always emerging into the light of Torah again. Sometimes we get comfortable in one place, or doing one thing, yet God is saying…” turn now and take your journey” or “continue your journey and continue to grow in faith, expose yourself to different situations, yet always trusting in The LORD.

The Love of God

Many thousands more than 3000 may have heard at the same time, in the same city, and continued to deny Jesus, to oppose God and God's Way.
When the ministers of the Gospel went to a city and preached, shared, taught the Good News, they were told to continue doing so until they were run out of the city, and then to go on to the next. It is or may be still very much like that today worldwide.

You missed my point which is made clearly in Jesus prayer in John 17.

There was a loving community in unity of faith which demonstrated the Character of God backing up every word Peter spoke about the Kingdom of God.

That evidence of the validity of the Gospel is almost extinct in this age.

Acts 2

44 And all the believers were together and had all things in common;
45 and they would sell their property and possessions and share them with all, to the extent that anyone had need.
46 Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart,
47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved.

ICE raids Italian restaurant in San Diego; deploys flash bang grenades to disperse the gathered crowd

Just a little update on this sidebar. Sheriffs don't like it.

Noem’s Sanctuary City List Backfires —DHS Forced to Remove It After Law Enforcement Revolt

“The list violated the core principles of trust, cooperation, and partnership with fellow law enforcement,” the National Sheriffs’ Association said. “This decision by DHS could create a vacuum of trust that may take years to overcome.”
Another update. The list is back, but a lot shorter. San Diego County [tying in to the OP] is on it, but LA County is not.

Justice Department releases a new list of sanctuary jurisdictions.

The Department of Justice published a new list Tuesday of “sanctuary” jurisdictions that it claims have policies, laws or regulations that obstruct enforcement of federal immigration laws.

Although the list includes the Trump administration’s typical targets — the city of Los Angeles and the state of California — it is much shorter than a previous list issued by the Department of Homeland Security. And at least one local area that has become a major battleground over immigration is not on it: L.A. County.

The previous Homeland Security list, which included most of California’s 58 counties, sparked ridicule for its errors. It even included the conservative city of Huntington Beach, which declared itself a nonsanctuary city a few days after Trump took office and sued the state of California over its sanctuary policies.

The Little-Known Story of Saint John Paul II's Secret Trip to Montana

Did you know Pope Saint John Paul II visited Montana after the 1976 Eucharistic Congress in Philadelphia before he became Pope?!

pope john paul ii young

Karol Wojtyła was an avid outdoorsman. Here he is on a kayaking trip in Poland. / Public Domain, Wikipedia

While serving as the Archbishop of Krakow, Cardinal Karol Wojtyla came to America to participate in the Eucharistic Congress held in Philadelphia in the summer of 1976.

At the conclusion of the congress, Cardinal Wojtyla traveled off the beaten path to the mountains of Montana to visit his friend, Monsignor Joseph Gluszek.

The two men had corresponded through letters since Wojtyla’s installation as the Archbishop of Krakow in 1958. They had met a handful of times in Poland during Gluszek’s visits to Krakow, and had become great friends over the years. In fact, Wojtyla even petitioned Pope Paul VI to make his good friend a monsignor.

Wojtyla’s visit to rural Montana was brief but monumental for the people of Geyser and the surrounding towns. A cardinal had never visited their town (and perhaps won’t ever visit again), given that Geyser is nothing more than a dot on the map. With a population of about 66 people, the town is easily overlooked.

An open letter to Pope Leo XIV

Open Letter to Pope Leo XIV
June, 2025

Your Holiness,

It is too good to be true, and yet it’s true. This could be the catchline for your whole papacy so far.

Consider this: You could have been elected in the middle of the American night, but instead you were elected in the middle of the American school day. A++ to the Holy Spirit. I cannot tell you how much more amazing this made the whole thing – my Sisters teach in all corners of the United States and we have been sharing stories. Children ran through halls with balloons in Texas. They made posters in Phoenix and nearly caused someone to pull a fire alarm (turns out yelling “SMOKE!” is a bit dangerous in this way). The second graders of Sacramento started chanting “U-S-A!” the moment they learned you were an American. And so on and so on. I’m so grateful that instead of being deprived of all of this awesomeness, the American Church was awake, together, and huddled around live feeds.

Holy Father, you don’t know me, but I feel as if I did know you. This is what your life is like now – that phrase times around 1.4 billion. Welcome to life in the Chair of St. Peter where you suddenly belong to all the world.

'A toll on your psyche': Jewish students recount mistreatment, harassment on college campuses

WASHINGTON — Shoshana Aufzien was studying for her finals on May 7 in the Butler Library at Columbia University in New York City — her usual study spot — when she heard shouting and was soon to be disrupted by dozens of anti-Israel protesters who stormed and took over the reading room.

She happened to be seated near the doorway. So she took out her phone and began to film as the activists screamed into their megaphones and repeatedly refused requests from public safety officers for them to leave.

One video of the Butler Library protest shared on social media shows multiple keffiyeh-clad demonstrators yelling chants and pounding on drums. Another video shows an anti-Israel spray-painting "Learn From Palestine" on the library shelves.

Salvation is in your hands, Jesus did his part

Let’s go to 1 John 4: 10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. 12 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. 13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit. 14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world. 15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God. 16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. 20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? 21 And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.

So this is a very good example on how love is distribute. Jesus is the propitiation for our sin, meaning Jesus paid for our sin, our past sin. He was the ultimate sacrifice for us. So we should look at our brother and Sisters as in the same love as Jesus has for us. Who is my brother and my Sister? All of the children of Adam!

Let’s go to Romans 13: 8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. 9 For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

And that is what God’s holy commandments are all about; the first four tells you how to love God and the last six tells you how to love your neighbor. If you love your God you will not do any thing to offend him, like having other gods before him. You will do as he says like remember the sabbath day to keep it holy on the seventh day of the week. If you love him you will obey him when he tells you not to eat certain meats etc…

And the same goes for your fellow man, if you love your neighbor you wouldn’t steal from him, you wouldn’t kill him, you wouldn’t try and sleep with his wife and so on and so forth. This is God’s definition of love and it is perfect in its ways. (See exodus 20: 1-17)

A new movie on VHS ?

Be kind, please rewind.

-CryptoLutheran
I grew up in the 2000s and still remember that line! I think I only went to Blockbuster once in my lifetime ;) The pizza parlor (now sadly closed) and gas station in my hometown had VHS tapes they rented as well as video games. By the advent of DVD's, it went away. The library also had an abidance of VHS tapes. I wonder where they are now?
