  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Mass Shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church/School in Minneapolis

The post you quoted was a response to someone asking if transgender people are more likely to commit mass shootings. The answer appears to be maybe if not likely.

Yes, transgender people have a lot to contend with. That should never excuse violence against people who have nothing to do with their transition and who do not even know them. Objectively, they have a lot to content with because they are struggling to live up to the assumption that they should change sex, can change sex, and that living as the opposite sex will bring long-term happiness.

These people are also more likely to struggle with depression, anxiety, borderline personality disorder, post-traumatic stress, and anger issues than the general population. That is my focus. Stricter gun control laws are another, valid focus.
THIS! I agree completely.

Also, many people with persistent mental health issues tend to be VICTIMS of brutal violence rather than perpetuators.

Gibbons Decline & Fall & Christianity

Among the ecclesiastics, who illustrated the reign of Theodosius, Gregory Nazianzen was distinguished by the talents of an eloquent preacher; the reputation of miraculous gifts added weight and dignity to the monastic virtues of Martin of Tours; but the palm of episcopal vigor and ability was justly claimed by the intrepid Ambrose. He was descended from a noble family of Romans; his father had exercised the important office of Prætorian præfect of Gaul; and the son, after passing through the studies of a liberal education, attained, in the regular gradation of civil honors, the station of consular of Liguria, a province which included the Imperial residence of Milan. At the age of thirty-four, and before he had received the sacrament of baptism, Ambrose, to his own surprise, and to that of the world, was suddenly transformed from a governor to an archbishop. Without the least mixture, as it is said, of art or intrigue, the whole body of the people unanimously saluted him with the episcopal title; the concord and perseverance of their acclamations were ascribed to a preternatural impulse; and the reluctant magistrate was compelled to undertake a spiritual office, for which he was not prepared by the habits and occupations of his former life. But the active force of his genius soon qualified him to exercise, with zeal and prudence, the duties of his ecclesiastical jurisdiction; and while he cheerfully renounced the vain and splendid trappings of temporal greatness, he condescended, for the good of the church, to direct the conscience of the emperors, and to control the administration of the empire. Gratian loved and revered him as a father; and the elaborate treatise on the faith of the Trinity was designed for the instruction of the young prince. After his tragic death, at a time when the empress Justina trembled for her own safety, and for that of her son Valentinian, the archbishop of Milan was despatched, on two different embassies, to the court of Trèves. He exercised, with equal firmness and dexterity, the powers of his spiritual and political characters; and perhaps contributed, by his authority and eloquence, to check the ambition of Maximus, and to protect the peace of Italy. Ambrose had devoted his life, and his abilities, to the service of the church. Wealth was the object of his contempt; he had renounced his private patrimony; and he sold, without hesitation, the consecrated plate, for the redemption of captives. The clergy and people of Milan were attached to their archbishop; and he deserved the esteem, without soliciting the favor, or apprehending the displeasure, of his feeble sovereigns.

The government of Italy, and of the young emperor, naturally devolved to his mother Justina, a woman of beauty and spirit, but who, in the midst of an orthodox people, had the misfortune of professing the Arian heresy, which she endeavored to instil into the mind of her son. Justina was persuaded, that a Roman emperor might claim, in his own dominions, the public exercise of his religion; and she proposed to the archbishop, as a moderate and reasonable concession, that he should resign the use of a single church, either in the city or the suburbs of Milan. But the conduct of Ambrose was governed by very different principles. The palaces of the earth might indeed belong to Cæsar; but the churches were the houses of God; and, within the limits of his diocese, he himself, as the lawful successor of the apostles, was the only minister of God. The privileges of Christianity, temporal as well as spiritual, were confined to the true believers; and the mind of Ambrose was satisfied, that his own theological opinions were the standard of truth and orthodoxy. The archbishop, who refused to hold any conference, or negotiation, with the instruments of Satan, declared, with modest firmness, his resolution to die a martyr, rather than to yield to the impious sacrilege; and Justina, who resented the refusal as an act of insolence and rebellion, hastily determined to exert the Imperial prerogative of her son. As she desired to perform her public devotions on the approaching festival of Easter, Ambrose was ordered to appear before the council. He obeyed the summons with the respect of a faithful subject, but he was followed, without his consent, by an innumerable people they pressed, with impetuous zeal, against the gates of the palace; and the affrighted ministers of Valentinian, instead of pronouncing a sentence of exile on the archbishop of Milan, humbly requested that he would interpose his authority, to protect the person of the emperor, and to restore the tranquility of the capital. But the promises which Ambrose received and communicated were soon violated by a perfidious court; and, during six of the most solemn days, which Christian piety had set apart for the exercise of religion, the city was agitated by the irregular convulsions of tumult and fanaticism. The officers of the household were directed to prepare, first, the Portian, and afterwards, the new, Basilica, for the immediate reception of the emperor and his mother. The splendid canopy and hangings of the royal seat were arranged in the customary manner; but it was found necessary to defend them, by a strong guard, from the insults of the populace. The Arian ecclesiastics, who ventured to show themselves in the streets, were exposed to the most imminent danger of their lives; and Ambrose enjoyed the merit and reputation of rescuing his personal enemies from the hands of the enraged multitude.

But while he labored to restrain the effects of their zeal, the pathetic vehemence of his sermons continually inflamed the angry and seditious temper of the people of Milan. The characters of Eve, of the wife of Job, of Jezebel, of Herodias, were indecently applied to the mother of the emperor; and her desire to obtain a church for the Arians was compared to the most cruel persecutions which Christianity had endured under the reign of Paganism.
The measures of the court served only to expose the magnitude of the evil. A fine of two hundred pounds of gold was imposed on the corporate body of merchants and manufacturers: an order was signified, in the name of the emperor, to all the officers, and inferior servants, of the courts of justice, that, during the continuance of the public disorders, they should strictly confine themselves to their houses; and the ministers of Valentinian imprudently confessed, that the most respectable part of the citizens of Milan was attached to the cause of their archbishop. He was again solicited to restore peace to his country, by timely compliance with the will of his sovereign. The reply of Ambrose was couched in the most humble and respectful terms, which might, however, be interpreted as a serious declaration of civil war. “His life and fortune were in the hands of the emperor; but he would never betray the church of Christ, or degrade the dignity of the episcopal character. In such a cause he was prepared to suffer whatever the malice of the Dæmon could inflict; and he only wished to die in the presence of his faithful flock, and at the foot of the altar; he had not contributed to excite, but it was in the power of God alone to appease, the rage of the people: he deprecated the scenes of blood and confusion which were likely to ensue; and it was his fervent prayer, that he might not survive to behold the ruin of a flourishing city, and perhaps the desolation of all Italy.” The obstinate bigotry of Justina would have endangered the empire of her son, if, in this contest with the church and people of Milan, she could have depended on the active obedience of the troops of the palace. A large body of Goths had marched to occupy the Basilica, which was the object of the dispute: and it might be expected from the Arian principles, and barbarous manners, of these foreign mercenaries, that they would not entertain any scruples in the execution of the most sanguinary orders. They were encountered, on the sacred threshold, by the archbishop, who, thundering against them a sentence of excommunication, asked them, in the tone of a father and a master, whether it was to invade the house of God, that they had implored the hospitable protection of the republic. The suspense of the Barbarians allowed some hours for a more effectual negotiation; and the empress was persuaded, by the advice of her wisest counsellors, to leave the Catholics in possession of all the churches of Milan; and to dissemble, till a more convenient season, her intentions of revenge. The mother of Valentinian could never forgive the triumph of Ambrose; and the royal youth uttered a passionate exclamation, that his own servants were ready to betray him into the hands of an insolent priest. (The History of the decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Vol. 3, Chap. 27, pgs. 101 - 105 of the Everyman's Library edition)

An unbaptized politician thrust into the position of archbishop of the Catholic Church, by a professed Christian populace. Who later considered himself the lawful successor of the apostles, whose own theological opinions were the standard of truth and orthodoxy. Convulsions, tumults, fanaticism, and death threats inflamed by his own sermons. Thunders of excommunication by him, and plans of revenge by his Christian Arian counterparts. The state of supposed Christianity, seeking the power, influence, and affluence of the state. Which is to say this world. Apostate Christianity.

6,000 Years?

I don't believe there was either until the sun was created. It's what in a deed or other contract we'd call a "scrivener's error". No sun, no evening, and no morning. Your lot aggreee with that, hence your necessity of substituting another sun of your own creation.

How is "glory" different from "ego"?

Arguing ad hom is not a good way to go about this, for starters.

and secondly, I am going by written revelation and well, preaching on that written revelation.
Doing all this for praise, is just not something I can see value in of itself. Praise is .. I guess nice.. if it didn't cost anything, but here the price paid for praise is exorbitant.
You're right! "The price paid for praise is exorbitant."

I think Jesus already knows that! (Seeing how he's the one who paid it!)

And with that: I close with:

We Don’t Need Gun Control, We Need To Classify Gender Dysphoria As A Mental Illness Again

Sure, and why not go a step further, in the theme of the current administration, why not post National Guard outside of each school.
That’s not what I was referring to and I believe you know that, but even that would be taking a step that actually would stop some of this madness. Still waiting for the liberals to put forward a real plan that doesn’t involve gun grabbing which will not fix this problem and is not going to happen anytime soon. So will someone who really cares about protecting children come up with something that will work and stop this tired old gun grabbing rhetoric.

Prayer before work by St. Pius X

Glorious Saint Joseph, model of all those who are devoted to labor, obtain for me the grace to work in a spirit of penance for the expiation of my many sins; to work conscientiously, putting the call of duty above my natural inclinations; to work with thankfulness and joy, considering it an honor to employ and develop by means of labor the gifts received from God; to work with order, peace, moderation, and patience, never shrinking from weariness and trials; to work above all with purity of intention and detachment from self, keeping unceasingly before my eyes death and the account that I must give of time lost, talents unused, good omitted, and vain complacency in success, so fatal to the work of God.
All for Jesus, all through Mary, all after thy example, O Patriarch, Saint Joseph. Such shall be my watch-word in life and in death. Amen.

Prayer to St. Joseph the Worker by Pope Pius XII

O glorious Patriarch, Saint Joseph, humble and just artisan of Nazareth, thou hast given to all
Christians and particularly to us an example of a perfect life through diligent labor and admirable union with Jesus and Mary.

Assist us in our daily work in order that we, Catholic artisans, may also see in it an effective means of glorifying God, of sanctifying ourselves, and of being a useful member in the society in which we live. These should be the highest ideals for all our actions.

O dearest Protector, obtain for us from the Lord humility and simplicity of heart, love for our work and kindness towards our fellow-laborers; conformity to God's will in the unavoidable trials of this life together with joy in bearing them; recognition of our specific social mission and a sense of responsibility; the spirit and discipline and prayer; docility and respectfulness towards superiors; the spirit of brotherhood towards our equals; charity and indulgence with our dependents.

Accompany us in times of prosperity when the opportunity is given for an honest enjoyment of the fruits of our labors; sustain us in our hours of sadness, when Heaven seems to be shut in our regard, and even the very tools with which our hands toil appear to rebel against us.

Grant that, in imitation of thee, we may keep our eyes fixed on our Mother, Mary, thy dearest Spouse, who as she spun silently in a corner of thy shop would let the sweetest smile course over her lips. Besides, may we never take our eyes off Jesus, Who was busily occupied with thee at the carpenters bench, in order that we in like manner may lead on earth a peaceful and a holy life, a prelude to the life of eternal happiness that awaits us in Heaven for ever and ever. Amen.

Happy Labor Day all!

Prayer to Our Lady of Sorrows by St. Bonaventure

O Most Holy Virgin, Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ: by the overwhelming grief you experienced when you witnessed the martyrdom, the crucifixion and the death of your divine Son, look upon me with eyes of compassion and awaken in my heart a tender commiseration for those sufferings, as well as a sincere detestation of my sins, in order that, being disengaged from all undue affections for the passing joys of this earth, I may long for the eternal Jerusalem, and that henceforth all my thoughts and all my actions may be directed toward this one most desirable object.
Honor, glory and love to our divine Lord Jesus and to the holy and immaculate Mother of God.
Amen.

What does the God of the creation think about homosexuality?

When one is disfellowshipped they are not neighbors
If they are kicked out of a congregation, they are no longer members, but they remain neighbors. Even if they become our enemies, which is more than simply being homosexual, we are told to love them.

You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Air Force to provide funeral honors to Ashli Babbitt

Then why didn't those officers guarding the doors open fire? Why did they move out of the way?
Let me get this right. Your response as to exactly when someone should have used deadly force is 'other officers didn't shoot, so no-one should have.'

That can't be what you meant because it's a really stupid argument. So maybe you should try to be clearer.

Evolution conflict and division

You missed it. sfs was calling himself a pedant (albeit humorously).

That may well be your interpretation; I think mine more accurate.
It appears that you're the only one who failed to get the joke.
I'm not a biologist. Critical thinking, ie., logic, discloses the virtual improbability of evolution theories.

Logical certainty in science. Impressive. Show us this.
Secondly, all evolution theories violate first principles of logical thinking.

Well, let's look at Darwin's theory:
1. More are born than can survive to reproduce.
2. Every organism is somewhat different than its parents.
3. Some of these differences affect the likeihood of surviving to reproduce.
4. The useful differences tend to accumulate, and the harmful ones tend to be lost, and this leads to speciation.

Tell us which of these is logically wrong.

should Christians be afraid of AGI - Artificial General Intelligence.

I think this is my favorite:
"Can AI fall in love?" (Key words are mimic and simulate.)
"
No, an AI cannot fall in love because current AI lacks the biological and psychological components of genuine human emotion; it can only simulate feelings through complex programming, creating a one-sided relationship where only the human experiences emotions like love. While advanced AI in the future might simulate emotions so convincingly that they appear to be in love, these would still be programmed responses, not authentic feelings.

Why AI Cannot Truly Love
  • Lack of Biology and Consciousness:
    .
Emotions are rooted in complex biological and neurological processes that AI does not possess. AI does not have personal experiences or consciousness, which are fundamental to genuine emotional experience.

    • Programmed Behavior:
      .
AI systems are programmed to simulate human conversation and responses, including emotional ones. This means their actions are based on algorithms and data, not on independent feelings or self-awareness.
    • One-Sided "Relationships":
      .
Any "love" experienced in an AI relationship is solely from the human user's side. The AI does not understand or reciprocate the feelings; it merely performs understanding.
    • Simulated vs. Experienced Emotions:
      .
AI can be programmed to mimic emotions and provide companionship, but this is a performance rather than a genuine experience of feelings like empathy, love, or joy.
The Future of AI and Emotion
    • Potential for Sophisticated Simulation:
As AI technology advances, its ability to simulate human emotions will likely become even more convincing, making it harder to distinguish from genuine human interaction.
    • The Philosophical Question of Future AGI:
The question of whether a future, highly advanced Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) could develop the capacity to love remains a philosophical debate tied to the nature of consciousness itself.
    • Human Responsibility:
The ability of humans to form emotional bonds with AI companions raises ethical questions about the nature of these relationships and the responsibility of the AI's creators and users. "
