  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

***Anglicans/Episcopalians only*** Confirmation vs Reception

I am a firm believer in praying other traditions prayers with them, I am using an Orthodox booklet at the moment myself, given to me by an Orthodox friend who is currently kindly praying for me from the thing. I do not think any of our differences really turn up in prayers, and most of the time by far we agree with each other in conversation too (there are points of difference, but that is OT).

My DH did this Reception into the Communion of the Church of England within a Celebration of Holy Communion during a regular Sunday Mass. His existing confirmation was regarded as valid, but he wanted to declare his affilliation to the Anglican Way in front of our local church members, so those were the prayers and vows he made.
Very nice! Thank you! :)

Does God want men to choose easy options ?

I believe God cares about many things : sparrows, the hairs of our heads (Lk, 12, 6-7)
But i 'd add, since He prescribed men to subdue the earth (Gn 1, 28), my feeling is that it's earth that's actually subduing mankind, through tornadoes, cyclones, cataclysms.
The destiny of the earth is to be destroyed by fire (2 Pe 3:11).
We aren't preserving it for anything.
However, i hope this concern for environment is not distracting men from the Word of the Gospel

Here’s the No. 1 fallacy on eternal security

I have a PhD. In History. It has not changed my opinion yet.
Well, good for you, that's quite an accomplishment. And if in the process you've studied such things as the writings of the early fathers, church councils, church histories, the wealth of theologizing that as transpired during the last 2 millenia, then you'll have a good or better idea of the true flavor of the Christian faith.

Air Force to provide funeral honors to Ashli Babbitt

As to you continuing to label Ashley a traitor. Is it not enough the lady now lies 6 foot under. Yet you seem determined to show no mercy nor respect labeling her as a traitor I guess every soldier that marched at that protest you would label a traitor as well . That’s all I say. I cannot change you and only say that there is a very fine line between justice and mercy.
Babbitt being dead does **not** mean she wasn't a traitor to her country and oath. IMG_4094.jpeg
I wouldn't bother about her at all if she weren't being given honors for her betrayal. IMG_4094.jpeg
She was there to interfere with Biden being declared the lawful winner of the election, to pave the way for the plan to submit a false slate of electors for Trump. IMG_4094.jpeg

No, it's not enough that she lays 6 foot under, as we all will eventually (metaphorically as burial isn't a certainty). IMG_4094.jpeg
She was shot as a part of a raging mob that she chose to be at the head of. IMG_4094.jpeg

Question on Gun Control - real life question asking for practical answers.

It is not a popular opinion. But i believe that just because you have a constitutional right to own guns, it doesnt mean you have the constitutional right to be an irresponsible gun owner without consequences. I am in the camp that believes that to own a gun is to assume a huge responsibility. With that comes heavy accountability. And if someone is unwilling or unable to assume that responsibility/accountability, then they probably shouldn't own a gun lest they are willing to face severe penalties.
This is why I advocate for returning gun training to public schools. If we are going to have a gun culture let's ensure we have proper training on handling and responsibility.

New on a journey looking for friends and community

Hi to everyone!

I'm Lina, 21 and from Germany. I was baptized into Catholicism but raised without faith or religion. My family looks down upon believers and blasphemious jokes are common. Until two years ago I was atheistic and very sinnful and completly lost.
I felt empty and it took me a long time to recognize my spiritual longing as Gods way of revealing himself to me, so that I can let him into my heart. Reading the Bible and the inspiring works of medieval Christian Mystics opened up a new path for me. Here I am now, I lost my old friends and have a difficult time finding new ones. I took a vow of celibacy and I'm in a state of deep contrition and feel Gods mercy through my penitence for my past sins. While I strongly identify with Catholicism, my mystic and more fringe beliefs are not mainstream anymore.

I don't regret changing my life for a relationship with Christ and am looking for friendship and meaningful talks. I'm always learning and trying to grow while I'm still at the beginning of my journey from darkness into union with God.

Are we spiritual beings or just spiritually minded and/or spiritually filled?

No

Bride and husband. Kingdom and Jesus
Rev21: 2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
Are you using Kingdom' and 'New Jerusalem' interchangeably?

Here’s the No. 1 fallacy on eternal security

Tell you what, since you accuse me of not addressing scripture that you have posted (which is small) let’s take one of the last ones that you posted. You posted John 15:5 out of context and I countered with John 10:25-30 and asked you to consolidate the interpretations (exegesis) and you ignored it. Exegess these two passages to prove your misguided assertions. You either can or you can’t and I lean towards you can’t. I don’t think you can separate your opinion from valid literary criticism.
Well, the two compliment each other nicely as well as both being consistent with other parts of the bible. His sheep are those who remain in Him, who don't visit for awhile and then stray, or who return if they do stray. They're the ones who will persevere to the end, proving to be good soil. They also produce good fruit such as those sheep in Matt 25 who did for "the least of these", meaning that they love, as John tells us they must in his letters, and that they overcome sin by the power of the Spirit as John also tells us tells us they must as well as Paul in Rom 8, as love and sin are mutually exclusive.

Salvation Wars

Never read it and never will, but he is a little late to the game. People have been redefining belief to include works (commitment, obedience, etc..) for a very long time.
Yeah, see Galatians 3:12 ("Yet the law is not of faith") and Romans 4:4 ("Now to him who works, the wages are not counted as grace but as debt").

I do believe thats the ethic one should have re gun ownership.

But the wording of the 2A does seem to indicate that any legislation toward responsibility is prohibited. "Shall not be infringed". So any conditions attached to this right would be out of bounds. Scotus disagrees with this plain reading of the words, thankfully.

Mass Shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church/School in Minneapolis

I didn't personally select the countries, I merely prompted Perplexity to include a combination of North America, South America, Europe, and Asia. My goal was to get a somewhat balanced cross-section.

If I were going to specifically cherry pick in order to make a point, I would've chosen the US, and then tossed in Haiti, Honduras, and a bunch of African nations.

I don't think anyone would say "I don't want to reduce gang membership".

However, there does seem to be a concerted effort to not discuss any other aspect than the guns. I believe it was either Mayor Jacob Frey or Jen Psaki who was on a news program recently discussing strategies for "Here's how we need to approach it if anyone tries to talk about anything other than the guns", I'll see if I can find the exact quote.
Don't do it for my sake, your first plot and statement about it rubbed me the wrong way. Either the data (in the plot) is different with what you later presented, or Perplexity AI can't do linear regression (if that was Perplexity too) or both. When it comes to trying to stop school shootings in the US, the only input I have is that firearms are tightly regulated in Sweden but everyone without recent criminal convictions can easily get a 2-4 rifles and a shotgun (on a hunting license) if they want to. The idea that you would need them for self-defense is wild to me.

Salvation Wars

Thanks for the feedback, @St_Worm2! I got through the CT article by using the "Read Only" setting on my browser, but thank you!

I think, next month, I may order it. I've been noticing a few books out lately by folks who are (technically) Protestant, kind of questioning Sola Fide, or, at least, questioning what it means. There was a book out by Paul A. Rainbow a while on the same topic. I might need to get that one, too.

I do see that Lordship Salvation models can be a bridge. Perhaps, in some ways, many of us are saying the same things in different ways. Perhaps this can be described as justification and sanctification being seen as part of a whole, instead of separate, or one springing from the other.
It's a slippery slope... No, not really. You're walking off a cliff when you take salvation away from Jesus and make it something you earn and deserve.

Heavily armed ‘Angel of Death’ from Alabama charged with threatening SoCal church to "do the Lord's reaping"

An Alabama man who claimed to be Michael the Angel of Death has been charged with multiple felonies after he threatened to “do the Lord’s reaping” at a Catholic monastery in Orange County and then traveled to the church with a sizable cache of weapons, authorities said.

On Wednesday, Joshua Michael Richardson, 38, was charged with felony criminal threats and possession of six high-capacity gun magazines, brass knuckles and a sword, according to the Orange County district attorney’s office. Investigators also found knives, a stun gun, body armor, duct tape and rope in his truck.

On Aug. 19, St. Michael’s Abbey in Silverado Canyon received an email from Richardson in which he claimed to be the “rider of the pale horse,” the last of the four horsemen in the Book of Revelation, who personifies death. He also said he was Michael the Angel of Death, referencing the Archangel Michael, who is tasked with escorting souls to the afterlife, prosecutors said.

[Richardson traveled to SoCal, attended a church service, entered private areas of the church and was escorted out. Later picked up by Sheriffs.]

Richardson’s arrest took place just one day after a shooting at a Catholic school in Minneapolis killed two children and injured 21 others.

Not your typical archangel gear:
