  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is this appropriate? Reading material

Hello,

I am currently (very slowly) reading the LDS (Latter Day Saint AKA Mormon) Quad (OT+ NT KJV Bible, Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price).

It might take me years to get through the dry reading, and it's not exactly "easy reading."

Do you think it's spiritually harmful or neutral for a Catholic to read that material?

Peace
I don’t know but if I were to guess I’d say that it depends on how strong one’s Catholic faith is. Yours seems to be very strong.

Peace
As I have said before:

I spent 2024 (and some 2023) studying this history of Monotheism.

That's a hard read.

I read stuff written by Zoroastrians, Early Jews, Middle Jews and Rabbinical Jews. I read defenses of Hindi and Buddhism and Confucianism.

I read A LOT of Muslim Rational and Mystical thought. (I highly recommend the Sufi's, btw - they are the highest thinking on a Rational defense of the existence of God).

I didn't read any LDS, maybe I should have - it just looks so made up on it's face it's hard for me to take seriously.

My question is :

Why would any of this be harmful ?

Knowledge is power.

It's also paradoxical and I'm sure that's what bothers you.

The more you learn, the less you know for sure. (That's why a lot of your social conservative types don't like education - it's to force you to question the society in which you learned in the first place, and we can't have THAT, can we?)

You know what a paradox is ? It's a mystery you haven't solved yet.

If you hit a paradox, it means you have an incomplete understanding of the subject. And, of course, the more you know, the less you completely understand.

Don't be afraid of that, it is just part of the learning process.

Jesus & Social Justice

1758919056489.png

And that’s the problem with assuming. I used the world “strictly” to qualify my statement. The government taking the main role of providing charity through entitlement programs does not preclude the churches to provide charity. I stated in my previous post that some of the largest charities are from Christian churches.

Never had I said that. You are once again assuming that just because I debated your incorrect analysis of the restoration of land by Israel every 50 years that I somehow are opposed to entitlement programs.

Here, I’m going to surprise you. I am for universal health care. I don’t follow the liberal playbook of calling everything I don’t like “evil” though.

I am an immigrant from Cuba and arrived as a child with only the one suitcase that we were allowed to take. My parents worked their fingers to the bone to give me and my brother the best upbringing possible so don’t get me going on the shortfalls of socialism and communism. Spare me the “evils” of capitalism. If this country is so bad then why do we have an immigration problem?
Sorry guy but being a "better option than a central american coutry" isn't not something to puff your chest about.
If my family could make it everyone else can to.
That's where you're wrong.
1) You said "your parents worked theri fingers to the bone to give my brother the best upbringing possible". Do you know how many children do NOT have that priviledge? There's plenty of American kids who don't have that...and it IS a priviledge.
2) If your parents could work that hard, they also had their health. Lucky them! Do you know how many children are burdenned with parents who are physically, mentally or emotionally unwell? That takes a toll and children too and having healthy parents is another privledge.
If we sat together and talked about your upbringing I would guarantee that we could find other points of priviledge too.
3) Migrant parents, IMHO will ALWAYS Be hard workers (mine were as well). It's also a priviledge to have parents who instill values like that. Many don't have that either.

I'm not saying these things to make you feel bad or that you don't deserve it; that's irrelevant. I'm saying it so you can appreciate that even in your situation, there are plenty of people who are FAAAAAR behind you guys.

Anyone in this country has the opportunity to grow and make as much money as they want. But they have to have the desire to make decisions that advances their position. Anyone can go into any community college and get a free education using the Pell grant and other economic help programs. They can even get a job at the school to help with their expenses. I know this because I taught community college for a bit.
Hold on. Are you suggesting (I'm not American so I'm asking for clarity)....the Pell grant can get you post secondary schooling COMPLETELY FOR FREE...and you are saying ANYONE can access that? because I didn't know that to be true. And if you don't qualify for those grants to those in extreme poverty and you have to get a student loan, that is a handicap....

Anyone below the poverty line can get food stamps and snap.
There are cuts here.
Cuts cuts cuts.
All schools provide lunches for children.
Not free. Who pays? Plenty of stories of kids who can't get cause they can't afford it....
and when someone tries to help?
Lunch lady fired for giving student free meal refuses offer to be rehired
And thoughts on Trump cutting these budgets?

There are programs to help people get a job.
Neurodivergence is a thing and some people struggle mightily with getting AND THEN ALSO KEEPING a job.
Cuts here.
There are programs that allow people to get clothes and other essentials. There is also a large underground black market that buys entitlement program benefits, like food stamps, from the beneficiaries.

The programs are there but people abuse them.
People abuse every program. That doesn't make the program bad; it means you need more punishment. Keeping in mind the amount of abuse that was happenning at the corporate level. IT DWARVES what poor people are "taking" from you.

Go fight the GOOD battle. Punch UP...not down.

As I stated before, I have no problems with entitlement programs but only for those that really need it.
Well, those programs are designed to be given to those who really need it. But either way, we seem to always seen a lot of side comments like this when these types of incidents are very rare. And yet the companies and third party groups who work with these entitlement programs will commit fraud in the millions and get just a "finger wag".

I am an independent because I can’t stand the drama and non action of both parties in the US. Both parties have gone to the extreme so no one benefits and there is no possibility of compromise. If you want change to happen then get off your far left liberal high horse and start voting people in that are more toward the center where maybe communication and compromise might be possible.
I don't know Via that great but I don't think he identifies as "far left".

Either way, most of the programs you are using as examples of ways that the US helps the poor are LEFT IDEAS that LEFT leaning government support and properly fund and that this and other subsequent Republican governments will continues to chip away at so that their billionaire buddies can pay less taxes. So, if you say you like those programs (since you cite them as you do in this thread), I would guess that you want them properly funded right?

Mid Acts Dispensationalist Only WE GRACE BELIEVERS HAVE BEEN ASSIGNED. ??

the same Greek word OU. !!

Right, but the decision for the word choice depends on grammar which is why the translations don't use "cannot" in that verse. Greek is more flexable when you have a word placement. This is why if you revert back to my first picture I posted, there are 4 options of the same greek word "OU" because depending on the word choice, depends on the definition and translation word. example : οὐ, οὐκ, οὐχ are not all the same. But they are options with different endings of the same word which changes the meaning.

ABC pulls Jimmy Kimmel Live after comments on Charlie Kirk

Oh, so Trump or the FCC didn’t censor anyone or take anyone off the air. Glad that’s been resolved
Nothing's changed just because Disney and Sinclair have backed down. Nothing at all. Just because Trump had to bring Garcia back didn't absolve him from sending him to San Salvador in the first place.

Looks like Carr is going to have to front up on his promise to 'do it the hard way'. Stay tuned and watch when absolutely nothing happens.

Mid Acts Dispensationalist Only WE GRACE BELIEVERS HAVE BEEN ASSIGNED. ??

But the word is Ouk/OU (G3756) so to say it's translated as "cannot" is incorrect.
View attachment 370680

The main definition is "no" or "not". While "cannot" is used as a translation, the reason it isn't with this verse is due to grammar.

View attachment 370682
Notice "cannot" has its own separate greek reference of "G1410".
So the reference of "cannot" (ever) placed inside this verse changes the point Paul was trying to make. To say cannot/ever, is essentially striping the identity within the body. Paul was trying to make a point, but not make it into a finite point of completely striping our singular identity in a complete, literal way.

But, the original tree that Paul referenced the Gentiles being grafted into, started with the Jews. So we can't say that we both were placed into one body which goes against Pauls point of the tree and being grafted in. So its the idea that the promise of inheritance was started out to be Israel when God made a promise to Abraham, but since we Gentiles are grafted into the family/body, we then are able to accept that inheritance. I know I'm being a stickler for word choices, but I think it's important because falsely using wrong wording can strip the point the biblical writer intended to make.
And it. uses CANNOT / 57 x and NOT /. 1210 X and NO /. 147 x and I use BLUE LETTER BIBLE. and we are using

the same Greek word OU. !!

We Are Not The Same

If we look at the examples from the Left leaning, when someone is killed who fits their narrative, they usually burn, destroy, hate, kill, loot, riot, violence, etc. in various areas across the country.
Charlie Kirk was murdered by one of the Left leaning. Now that murderer is being defended by some on the Left.
But how did the Right leaning handle one of their own being killed by a Left leaner?
Since Kirk's murder have they went out and burned, destroyed, looted, rioted and done violence, etc across the country?
If so, please share video of Kirk defenders doing so, because I haven't seen any rioting by the Right leaning so far since Kirk was murdererd.
I’m so sick of reading about ”the Left” vs “the Right”. People are people.

We Are Not The Same

It's not "wild claims" but it is facts. Of which no Left leaner has yet to prove otherwise.

If we look at the examples from the Left leaning, when someone is killed who fits their narrative, they usually burn, destroy, hate, kill, loot, riot, violence, etc. in various areas across the country.
One example...months of riots during the summer of 2020.
These aren't facts above. It's pure conjecture based in vacuous content. Who was killed that "fits their narrative"?
Charlie Kirk was murdered by one of the Left leaning.
Robinson more likely killed Kirk because he was having a relationship with a trans. And by the way you can lean left and still be on the right.
Now that murderer is being defended by some on the Left.
His own family and friends have said he leaned Left politically. I trust them more than Left leaning deniers online

But how did the Right leaning handle one of their own being killed by a Left leaner?

Since Kirk's murder have they went out and burned, destroyed, looted, rioted and done violence, etc across the country?
None of that happened from the Right.

If so, please share video of Kirk defenders doing so, because I haven't seen any rioting by the Right leaning so far since Kirk was murdered.
You all can't share videos of them doing that.
In a left/right dichotomy you need to fill in the blanks with substantive and valid opposing subjective views that represent valid issues in the interests of good policy. Otherwise, it's not analytical.

Wouldn't it be dumb for the blank meaning you call "The right" to riot and protest the killing of Charlie Kirk by some 22-year-old kid who didn't like Kirk's anti-trans stance? What could it hope to accomplish? It's not like Kirk was murdered by police. It's not like the guy isn't in custody.

We Are Not The Same

I think there is a difference between people who lean left, vs people who are far left. I wouldn't consider the shooter "leaning" left by any standard based on the evidence I've seen and would put him more toward the far left instead. No matter if its far left or far right, both have a history of doing bad things. But also there is evidence that FBI agents instigated riots on both sides, so I'm not fully convinced that a lot of these riots/instances regardless of what side you're on, isn't just people trying to push for a civil war.

Karoline Leavitt rebukes Democrats for not condemning Charlie Kirk's murder: 'Truly a sad moment'

Sure it does. Republicans are being petty trying to use this to make Democrats look petty.

That's right and I've said that already BUT Democrats have no need voting on a resolution which both honors Charlie Kirk and condemns violence because they've already condemned violence after Kirk's murder. If Republicans would have left the honor Kirk off of the resolution, Democrats would have voted for it

Yes it did since she was condemning Democrats for not voting for the resolution to condemn violence. She knew that she was lying.
Lying? I’m done with this. You just keep doubling down on your own error

The significance of Paul

You received some good answers here, but I thought I would add, Paul‘s writings did come with a very significant warning 2 Peter 3:16 as he is hard to understand. Some Christians use his writing against the teachings of Jesus Christ and the commandments of God, which I believe this is a huge mistake.
Don't confuse your personal theology with Paul's freedom from the curse of the law.

What do You Mean by Believe?

The NT follows the OT, not replaces it. The sons of God are real entities (elohim) and the prime opponents in God's warfare with adversity. We are simply servants of one or the other.
In the NT, there is no son of God who does not believe in Jesus Christ.

Trump Calls For Ilhan Omar’s Removal From Congress

Right wing violence is down.
For the first time since the 90! Kudos.
Trumps rhetoric is based on personal attacks by the left.
IT's disappointing when "observations" are classified as attacks. But that is just another masterstroke for Trump; that's he's convinced people of that.

The attacks to destroy him and his family.
Which observations were those? When he said he'd date his daughter?
Where we remind about how he raped Ivana, when they were married?
When we remind that he's slept with prostitutes while married?
OR that his very good friend is a pedophile?

Which of these observations was an attack?

REAL attacks from democrats to destroy his life and put him in jail. Including two attempts on his life.
Again...what do you mean "real attacks". There has been nothing 100% conclusive that either of those attempts were from hardenned democrats. Or was the 2nd one proven? The one that didn't get the shot out; where he was rooting around in a hedge?

When you start decrying the violence and rhetoric from the left I'll take you seriously.
Nice try. For the last 3 years we've been putting up data that show an increase in Far Right violence....NONE of you have acknowldged it. You've all tried to obfuscate, downplay or in other ways excuse it. Or suggest the definitions are all wonky. Nothing close to responsible.

And now, ONE year of the left getting more violence and this is your attitude?

Physician, heal thyself.

And I can't take you seriously with such a ridiculous conspiratorial question you raised about the bullets.
I'm sorry? Which "question" was that?

Does "equality" even matter to Jesus?

The equal treatment I find in scripture is thus.

Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord God: and not that he should return from his ways, and live?

24 But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked man doeth, shall he live? All his righteousness that he hath done shall not be mentioned: in his trespass that he hath trespassed, and in his sin that he hath sinned, in them shall he die.

25 Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear now, O house of Israel; Is not my way equal? are not your ways unequal?

It pertains to salvation.
Or, where do we put this?

As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.

14 What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid.

15 For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.

All of creation is God's.
He let's the weeds grow with the wheat.

One will be harvested and the other burned.

Keeping in mind;

James 2:14
What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? 17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

The work believers perform is not about salvation, it is an outflowing of the grace of God.
God sees all the things we don't see. So, He's able to judge us according to what measure we use to judge others. And Jesus qualifies that by saying that the merciful shall receive mercy.
