  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

When 70% of churchgoers don't open their Bibles daily

I read the entire new testament 3x. I've read most of the old testament. I sometimes listen to the bible on YouTube.
I've read the Bible cover to cover at least once. Probably read most of the NT countless times. Some of the OT is too dry for me, and I have problems comprehending it. I still need to study it more often, though.

When 70% of churchgoers don't open their Bibles daily

I wouldn't be surprised if the RC church is close to 90% that don't. I do, but I have just recently rejoined the faith. I also really enjoy saying the Holy Rosary every day. It is a great way to meditate.
During Holy Mass, we have an old testament reading, a psalm, a new testament reading, and the Gospel. Not to mention, many of the prayers of Mass are straight from Scripture. If one attends Mass faithfully, they will hear a HUGE portion of the Bible read to them for most of tier lives. Of course, it's important to read and study it on you own, too. :)

Charlie Kirk's Memorial Service: Let's Talk About That.

I was mocking Trump, not God. The line between them may be blurry for a good number of people, but it’s still there.
I never said you were mocking God. Just in general, this country would do well if there was a revival of the Fear of the Lord. Another Great Awakening if you will. I remain hopeful that Charlie Kirk's death sparks a movement that brings the nation to its knees in prayer and repentance.

The Son of Man and the Throne Room

I'm not in disagreement with you. I've said the same before, although I'm not a Preterist. Like Preterists I've argued that many signs Jesus gave in his Olivet Discourse were fulfilled in his generation as warning signs prior to the 70 AD judgment. Preaching the Gospel in throughout the Roman world may have been part of this, since Jews may have been scattered throughout that world and needed to be warned, as well.

However, I also believe that the Great Commission extended, in a different form--by principle, beyond the time of the Apostles and that generation. Jesus said that the Jewish Tribulation would extend until his return. This means that the Church would continue to exist, and would have to continue witnessing to the world.
Where did Jesus say this? Please cite Scripture passage.
And it wasn't just to the Roman world that the Church was to witness. The Roman world was to be broken up into different states, each one requiring a Christian witness. So the mission of evangelizing the world continued well past the age of the Apostles. I think also that the Gospel is to be preached to all nations, and not just to the Roman "world."

Yes, it continued, but this doesn't have anything to do with the original command Jesus spoke to the original apostles. They personally fulfilled their special commission during their lifetime.
I do not agree with "Replacement Theology." The promises of God stand independent of the Law of Moses, the latter being temporary. The promises of God are eternal. What God promised Abraham concerning Israel and the nations is a permanent and eternal promise, in my view.

There isn't any replacement. Jesus' church is the fulfillment of the promise made to Abraham. The Jews may join Jesus' church at any time.

Genesis 17:4
“On my part, behold, my covenant with you: you will be the father of many nations.

All nations unite under Jesus' New Covenant. All peoples unite under Jesus' New Covenant without distinctions between nationalities. Galatians 3:28

Romans 4:16-18
Therefore, the promise depends on faith, so that it may be a free gift and the promise may be guaranteed to all descendants, not only to the adherents of the Law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham. For he is the father of all of us, 17 as it is written, “I have made you the father of many nations,” in the sight of God in whom he believed, the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being what does not exist.
18 Though he hoped against hope, he believed that he would become the father of many nations, in fulfillment of the promise, “So shall your descendants be.”

Except for its historical value, there isn't any religious purpose for geographical Jerusalem's continued existence. All faithful Christians are now the temples of the Holy Spirit, and so they are also spiritual partakers in the assembly of saints in the heavenly Jerusalem. 1 Corinthians 3:16-17

Hebrews 12:22-23
But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. You have come to myriads of angels in joyful gathering, 23 and to the assembly of the firstborn whose names are written in heaven, and to God the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous who have been made perfect.

Israel's fall was an opportunity for other nations to enjoy the Kingdom of God as Israel had. After all, Israel had benefited from the Kingdom for 1500 years before their hearts became so hardened that they were relegated to those virtually without a name.

But I believe that if God has saved the pagan Gentile nations, forgiving them their sins, He can also forgive Israel after 2000 years of wandering in their sins. The hardness of heart can be broken by a combination of judgment and chastisement. The judgment has been put off to give time for the Gentile nations to repent, if they so choose to do so.
God's original plan was to send his son to save all people, not the Jews only.
His plan included Jesus' lineage from a particular nation to bring notice of God's salvation plan through prophecy. Romans 5:12, 1 Timothy 2:3-6

I think perhaps Enoch and Elijah will return to preach to the Jews shortly before Jesus' second coming. Neither have physically died. Malachi 3:23

When 70% of churchgoers don't open their Bibles daily

But it only takes a few minutes a day to study scriptures, As a deacon in my church I can tell you that many finish services on Sunday and put their bibles in their car and not open it again until the next time they go to church. The writer of Hebrews warns us that:

“For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the actual words of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food. For everyone who partakes only of milk is unacquainted with the word of righteousness, for he is an infant. But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to distinguish between good and evil.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭5‬:‭12‬-‭14‬ ‭NASB2020‬‬

Make a Bible reading plan. It doesn’t matter how much you read as long as you are reading the Word of God daily and praying to the Lord to lead you. Get off the milk and into solid food.
I disagree on the time commitment, since in my view to give it proper study involves understanding the context, textual issues, etc. Most simply reading it a few minutes a day is more likely to have the reader come away with unsupported understandings that have imported modern biases into the text.

Really? Christians on here make judgements about people’s salvation all the time.

Really, though, I’m not pessimistic about salvation, just dubious of the claim that event attracted people who weren’t already Christians to begin with. It’s like going to a football game and marveling at the home team’s popularity.
I have never seen a single Christian on these forums casually dismissing a person coming to the faith. At least, up until now.

The Venting Thread

Last week, my mom made a comment that made me mad.

I've been having trouble with my job. She accused me of wanting to be lazy and go on welfare. That was not even on my mind at all.

And I find it hypocritical because she has financially helped a particular relative for decades. I'm the bad guy because I want to quit my toxic job but you're always helping someone that you've trained to be dependent on you?
Some of the older generations hide how much help they actually got or gave.

Also,
I'd be lost w/out my parents, but also, I remember when I was job hunting my parents expected me to have work pretty much right away. & that's just not how it works, & it all got me very upset, you don't just apply to a job & get it, or even jobs & get it. It takes time sometimes & they didn't get that at all. Sadly, I think a lot of parents just think it s/b easy for their kids

Media Ignores Another Random Stabbing by Criminal of Innocent Woman on Public Transit

Witnesses, including the bus driver, told police that Rhoades and the 43-year-old victim boarded the bus at the Walmart stop at 81st and Lewis. Rhoades sat directly behind her, and they had no prior interactions or verbal exchanges. As the bus arrived at the main station, Rhoades reached around and allegedly assaulted the victim by slicing her throat before leaving the scene.
He is also being held on a fugitive warrant out of Missouri.

Man, idk why Fox and the NY Post aren’t all over this one. Maybe it’s because the victim didn’t die. Maybe it’s because her attacker is white and a fugitive from a red state. Who knows?
Awful. So sick of all this violence. Enough is enough.

Not my circus. Not my clown.

AMERICA’S COMPETING FOR-PROFIT PRIVATE HOSPITAL MODEL PREVENTS BULK TENDERS
The USA’s competing private hospital groups do not have the financial muscle to DEMAND a smaller-price-per-pill. They approach Big Pharma like Oliver, ‘Please sir - I would like some more!” But Big Pharma demands they buy brand name instead of generic, or extorts the hospital in higher costs even for generic.

Compare that to Australia - where half our hospitals are government owned and operated. This cost is shared between the Federal government and the States, but the Federal government co-ordinates massive tenders for medical kit and pills through our Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme - aka “The PBS”.

American big pharma HATE our PBS! The PBS not only demands generic where possible, but because it is THE Australian medical tender going to market - the PBS not only demands lower price per unit - but it demands RESPECT! They HAVE to get that tender - and have to seriously COMPETE with the other suppliers! (I thought that was the whole point of going to the market for something?)

And, predictably, under Trump’s self-serving MAGA philosophy - Big Pharma are getting in on the act and trying their luck. They complain to Trump about our PBS. Meanwhile - Australian’s enjoy VASTLY cheaper meds through the PBS.
US pharmaceutical giants urge Trump to put further tariffs on Australia

In those maybe 3% of cases when a medicine we need is not YET listed under PBS, people go home and hug their loved ones with tears in their eyes - and say “I had to pay AMERICAN prices!”

ABC pulls Jimmy Kimmel Live after comments on Charlie Kirk

They thought he did.
They thought wrong, didn't they?
A lot of people thought that Kimmel was having a go at Kirk. He wasn't. He was showing Trump to be the person he is. His comments were about Trump and some of the rusted on MAGA people trying to divert any attention away from the possibility that the kid was a right wing nut.
No one on planet Earth actually considered the possibility that the murderer was right wing. Why do you entertain political liars?

Citing Charlie Kirk murder, Tennessee pastor demands removal of 'Hate Has No Home' signs

You don’t have to support them. Just don’t say any thing about it. Is that too much to ask?

When I meet people I don’t start telling them how to live their lives or that they are abominations etc.
I'm in agreement with you, then. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. From Disney's great classic, BAMBI.

Exactly. And if someone has been invited to my home and they are introduced to a gay person or a person who is trans, if they then say anything derogatory about them they'll be immediately escorted to the front door. If they can't be civil to my friends and family then they are persona non grata.
Agreed. Shouldn't adults act like adults?

It's going back a few years (to Trump 1.0), but this made no more than a ripple in the national news cycle, and certainly not much of a cause celebre.

[Oregon Senator] Merkley urged President Trump to "speak out personally against the rising tide of Islamophobia and other forms of bigotry and racism in our nation that he has provoked through his numerous statements, policies and appointments"

President Trump delayed commenting on the stabbing attack, leading to public pressure on him to do so. Later, a message was posted on Trump's presidential Twitter account, stating "The violent attacks in Portland on Friday are unacceptable. The victims were standing up to hate and intolerance. Our prayers are w/ them."

Here’s guessing the majority were already Christian and this was simply preaching to the choir.
That's true, but maybe they wanted to re-commit themselves and be more fervent? Who knows? Or their emotions were very running very high?
