Weight loss coach explains reality of low carb dieting

Richa Prasad has a great channel of diet tips that are science based. She's been helpful in helping me understand phenomena like weight loss plateaus, and how sometimes you need to eat more to lose weight.

In this video, she explains how low carb diets actually work, and what parts are only marketing. The dramatic initial weight loss is almost always water weight. She also talks about the political origins of junk foods and low carb diets (she's probably been reading Marion Nestle's work on the subject: the livestock and agribusiness industries were critical in shifting the conversation away from whole foods and dietary patterns to isolated nutrients).

What are the key issues of US Election 2024?

I cannot vote in your election though close relatives can. But it seems to me that this election is one of the most important ever. So what advice would you give my relatives as to the most important issues in this election?

From my European perspective, the following seems most pertinent. But I would be interested to learn what Americans think are the key issues:

1) POLITICAL PARTISANSHIP threatens to split the country and even provoke a civil war - much to the delight of America's rivals. So what candidate can best unite America and reconcile those on both sides? How can personality politics, abortion obsessions, lies about election fraud, and 'plan-demics' be put into proper perspective?

2) AMERICAN PROSPERITY AND POWER ARE UNEQUALLY SHARED - Your super-rich grows richer while those at the bottom struggle with high prices, debt, a lack of proper health care, and educational disparities. Social mobility continues to decline and various voices among the superrich are too loud while those of the people can hardly be heard. Seething resentment is dismissed as socialism but this just feeds the underlying discontent.

3) PUBLIC DEBT levels are at a record high and this is becoming unsustainable. The political culture seems to disallow the possibility of a balanced budget.

The Other Side of Love

I have been reading in the Psalms the last few days, and I have been sharing what the Lord is teaching me through these psalms as lessons that can be applied to our lives today. And he has placed in my mind this morning a particular theme (message) which he wants me to convey, and so this may be a little different from the usual today, but we will see what the Lord has in mind for me to share today. For I am sensing he wants me to alter Psalms 18:1-3 to make it from the perspective of someone addicted to specific sin.

From the perspective of the sinfully addicted:

“I lust after myself, O god of my flesh, my strength. The god of my flesh is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer. For the god of my flesh is my sinful addiction – my idolatries, and adulteries and sexual immorality and lies and trickery and manipulations. This is what delivers me and makes me feel good when I am down and when I am tempted with evil. I take refuge in this idol of my flesh, and my lies are my shield of protection which keep me from being found out and discovered for the evil I commit.
“The lusts of my flesh and my sinful practices are my salvation, my stronghold (sanctuary, iron grip, stranglehold, control, sway). My sexual idolatry is the lord that I call upon, which is worthy to be praised in my eyes, for my eyes are full of adultery and the lusts of the flesh and the lusts of the eyes and the pride of life. And so my enemies are those who are walking in truth and in righteousness, and not in sin, who are following the Lord Jesus, and not the lusts of their flesh. I hate them for their uprightness in Christ.”

Now, please understand this is not me speaking about myself, but this is for illustrative purposes in showing how those whose god is the flesh are really thinking, which is reflective in their life choices and in their attitudes and in their beliefs, which is evidenced in their actions and in their behaviors. And slavery to sin is also under the control of Satan, so Satan is really the one being worshipped here in addition to the flesh and the lusts of the flesh and the pride of those who will not yield control of their lives over to God.

But sadly, this speaks of many professers of faith in Jesus Christ, too, who are professing faith in Jesus Christ with their lips but who are still living under the grip (stronghold) of Satan and of the flesh. And sexual immorality and sexual idolatry coupled together appears to be the number one sin which has a stranglehold on the lives of so many people on planet earth, including a large majority of those giving lip service to the Lord, many of whom are also pastors and elders in the gatherings of “the church.”

Yet, they will claim that they know love when they don’t really know love at all, for they habitually engage in what is the exact opposite of and on the other side of love, which is all about self and the lusts of the flesh and the pride of life and has nothing absolutely to do with real biblical love, the kind that we are to have for one another. For it is all about serving self, and not serving God, and not treating others with biblical love. For biblical love prefers what God prefers which is what is morally pure, honest, and faithful.

So, they don’t live in the real world, but they live in their own dream world, their world of fantasies, misconceptions, and deceptions. And that is where they dwell, not with God. And that is what controls their lives, not God. And what they call “love” is really the opposite of love, for it is selfishness, impurity, dishonesty, hatred, evil, maliciousness, trickery and deceit, etc. For these “lovers” are lovers of self, and not of God, who are the self-indulgent, the idolatrous, and the adulterous who live in rebellion against the Lord.

So the person looking at both sides of love and life is disillusioned with life and love, and so it would appear that he is experimenting with the “other side” to try to satisfy what he feels is lacking only to come to the realization (or not) that he doesn’t really know life or love at all. For all he recalls is the fantasy of what he thought was life and love, but it wasn’t all that it was cracked up to be. And in his search for love, he suppressed the truth of God by his evil deeds and by him saying “NO” to God over and again and again.

And this is an extremely sad and grievous situation that so many professers of faith in Jesus Christ are finding themselves in today. Yet they are totally responsible and answerable to God for what they do, as we all are, make no mistake. But “the church” has played a huge role in this situation skyrocketing as it has because so much of today’s “church” is altering the gospel message to make it more palatable to human flesh. And so their altered gospel is granting “believers” permission to keep living in their sin.

So, all of this is completely backwards of what it is supposed to be, which is why the Lord had me temporarily alter this passage of Scripture in Psalms 18 to illustrate the “other side” of what so many are calling “love” these days. But they don’t really know love at all, because what has been described here is the opposite, i.e. the other side of love, which is not love, but which is selfishness and self-indulgence and godlessness and hate. For idolatry and adultery and sexual immorality are not love, not even close!

And there are many married couples here in America where one spouse or the other (or both), usually the men, but not always, is living in this sexual idolatry and adultery, and perhaps for a very long time. And so their spouses pay the consequences, whether or not they are aware of what is going on, for they are not the “beloved”, but the adulterer is his own “beloved,” or his (or her) sexual addiction (idol) is his “beloved,” instead. And so the faithful spouse gets the “short end of the stick,” so to speak. And that’s not right!

But there is a way out of sinful addiction. Jesus Christ died on that cross so that we can be crucified with him in death to sin and raised with him to walk in newness of life in him, no longer as slaves (addicts) to sin, but now as slaves to God and to his righteousness. And so we are to no longer let sin reign (have control) in our mortal bodies, to where we obey its desires. For if sin is what we obey, and not obedience to our Lord, it will lead to death, not to life eternal with God (Romans 6:1-23). So we need to take this to heart.

So the way out of slavery (addiction) to sin is via us bowing the knee to the Lord in humble surrender and submission to him as Lord (Owner-Master) of our lives. We must choose to let go of our sin and to let God take control in our lives, and then daily by the Spirit we must say “NO!” to sin and “YES!” to God. And we must leave all those sinful practices behind us and we must now follow our Lord in obedience to his commands in living in moral purity, honesty, faithfulness, and godliness – all in the strength and power of God.

Broken Cord

An Original Work / August 29, 2018

Your bond is broken with your Lord and Savior
And your testimony is separate from Him.
Your words not matching your actions today.
Repent of your sin and bow down and pray.
Live what you testify in truth always.

Purity’s lacking in your life and witness,
For you profess one thing, but other you do.
Not moral, spiritual. Still of the flesh.
Not living in truth to what you confess.
Lying about it puts you in a mess.

Living a lie is your practice, ‘tis true of you.
Masquerade righteousness – none of it true.
Your heart is not given to your Lord God.
Because of how you live, you are a fraud.
Turn from your sin and give your life to God.

The concept of men having sex with men and the word for it

Wiki:

The word homosexual translates literally as "of the same sex", being a hybrid of the Greek prefix homo- meaning 'same' (as distinguished from the Latin root homo meaning 'human') and the Latin root sex meaning 'sex'.
The first known public appearance of the term homosexual in print is found in an 1869 German pamphlet
77 years later in 1946, the term homosexual made its first appearance in the English Bible.

Recently, ESV 1 Corinthians 6:

9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality.

The Infallible Word of God versus Human Error

One thing I struggled with about Christianity is the statement that the Bible is “the infallible Word of God.” To me, the Holy Trinity is pure and perfect, yet any message passed on through human beings is bound to be flawed.

Any work done through people is bound to be contaminated by human errors. I only have to look at my own personal history to clearly see that everyone of us makes errors. So the idea that I should take the Bible word for word as the infallible Word of God doesn’t make sense to me.

How do you see this? And more in general, how do I talk to Christians who take the Bible word for word literally, and who see any idea that there may be little flaws in there as blasphemous? Any feedback appreciated. And the message of Christianity is still the best message out there. God bless!

Stock buybacks....so much...

Stock buybacks! Helping Americans?

Well helping rich Americans. Yes they could be giving that money to employees, they could be managing prices better. But nope.
Why?

GM announces record $10 billion stock buyback—more than it’s spending on UAW raises—as its electrification push stalls
Cigna does the same.
It seems any given week billions of dollars suddenly exist and get socked away in the dragon hordes instead of given to people who will spend it to survive.

Enriching stock holders is more important than customers or employees.

Reading sacred scripture.

I want to say, first off, that by sacred scripture I mean the 73 canonical books in Catholic Bibles. I do not mean 66 books, or Jewish Tanakh, or a larger number of canonical books according to some other tradition.

When reading sacred scripture there are a number of ways one can approach the text. One is called "historical critical method" and it involves learning the nuances of the languages spoken and written at the time in which particular passages being read were written. It also means learning about the literary forms in use and identifying the form used in the passage under study. Further, it means attempting to discover the intended meaning of the author of the passage.

There is a great deal to be gained from this approach. Some may see it as "the right way" to read the sacred scriptures. But is it? Really?

We should not care about XYZ people harmed by <insert ZYX here>, because Jesus didn't overthrow rome, who was harming ABC people"

anyone else seen this argument made, indirectly or directly by a lot of christians in the west?

we don't need to dredge up specific examples.
of course it stinks.

but, would you confront one of your neighbors if they killed another one of your neighbors? (lets assume there are no other authority around)

What purpose is God carrying out during the Millennial Kingdom?

Many believers do not have a passing thought about the Millennial Kingdom, so let's get started with some basics:

We see the timeline of this 1000-year reign of Messiah in Revelation 20:4 - 6 "Then I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was given to them. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony of Jesus and because of the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received the mark on their forehead and on their hand; and they came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were completed. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is the one who has a part in the first resurrection; over these, the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with Him for a thousand years."

So for those blessed individuals who will "Rule and Reign" with our Messiah, this event is known as the "First Resurrection" and will be for the ones who "Overcome" "He who overcomes, and he who keeps My deeds until the end, TO HIM I WILL GIVE AUTHORITY OVER THE NATIONS; AND HE SHALL RULE THEM WITH A ROD OF IRON, AS THE VESSELS OF THE POTTER ARE BROKEN TO PIECES, as I also have received authority from My Fathe" Revelation 2:26-27
Included in this ruling class of resurrected and glorified saints that will "Rule and Reign" with Messiah would be the 144,000 messianic saints as they will be the "first fruits to God and to the Lamb" Rev 14:4

But more will be included other than these select few in the ruling class. All of those true believers who live through the tribulation will be brought into the Kingdom.

Mat 25:31 - 34 “But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on His glorious throne. “All the nations will be gathered before Him; and He will separate them from one another, as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats; and He will put the sheep on His right, and the goats on the left. “Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world."

Included among those who will transition over to the Millennial Kingdom will be every living Israeli (Romans 11:26) who has been saved at his coming (Rev 19)

A tragic period for Orthodox Christians - Attu Island, Alaska - 1942

Death of last surviving Alaskan taken by Japan during WWII rekindles memories of forgotten battle

Greg Golodoff’s wife of 50 years, Pauline, said he never spoke with her about his experience in Japan or about being the last living resident of Attu.

“I tried to ask him, but he didn’t want to talk about it,” she said.

Japanese soldiers landed on Attu Island on June 7, 1942, when residents were attending services at the Russian Orthodox church.

Those Who Love God...Soldiers or Agents?

God has equipped each person to perform the works He wants that person to perform. That person has a choice as to whether or not to perform those works, but if that same person has chosen to love God, his choice is made for him as described in Romans 8:28. The choice is made to act on God’s behalf if we love Him.

There is a song called ‘Onward Christian Soldiers.’ Question is, are we soldiers, or agents of God? Does it matter which one we are?

A soldier is generally defined as someone who fights when there is a war. Those of us who love God are fighting a constant war against Satan. But does it stop there? Depends on the degree we’re fighting him. If we as soldiers spend all our time fighting him while disregarding the needs of our family, friends and neighbors, since as soldiers we cannot go AWOL at any time to look after them, is Satan not winning the war against the human race?

What is an agent? An agent is defined as a person who acts for or represents another...Seems an agent of God is involved in a lot of things, not just fighting Satan. Our righteousness include our commitment toward God. Our righteousness includes treating other people as God would want us to, for the specific purposes we have. Jesus in Matthew 22:37-39 has given us two great commandments: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind...And... You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” As far as the treatment of other people goes, inasmuch as God loves us he would expect us to love eachother as He would love us, and in His Name. This is what would make us His agents.

Our commitment to God, and to no other Gods, is what makes us His soldiers. Seems that at the end of the day, we have a dual purpose as soldiers and agents of Him.

International Perspective on 2024 American Election

America has its domestic reasons for electing a president and it is their choice whom they elect but because they are the current leader of the free world the result matters to the rest of us also. So I wanted to start a thread on the potential international repercussions of the 2024 election. especially since Trump now seems to be the preferred candidate of most Republicans.

1) This election is a choice between isolationism and internationalism. Isolationism would mean Ukraine being conquered by Russia with possible further advances to follow and most likely an unopposed invasion of Taiwan to follow that with the loss of the main advanced chip industry to the Chinese. It could mean the end of NATO as a security alliance with the repercussion of less world stability, loss of American influence both military and economic and with the increased global instability the onset of more wars, economic depression (following increased protectionism), and a loss of global cooperation on key issues like the environment, pandemics, and global organized crime.

2) Trump is perceived as being unfit to govern by just about everybody in the Western world outside the USA. His election would result in an immediate loss of American credibility (he is a proven liar (e.g. election fraud claim) and will probably be convicted of crimes before the election). Trump as president might spell the death of American global leadership, and the failure of the Europe-US alliance that has kept the peace for the last 77 years.

Loving Vain Words and Seeking Lies

“Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness!
You have given me relief when I was in distress.
Be gracious to me and hear my prayer!
“O men, how long shall my honor be turned into shame?
How long will you love vain words and seek after lies? Selah
But know that the Lord has set apart the godly for himself;
the Lord hears when I call to him.
Be angry, and do not sin;
ponder in your own hearts on your beds, and be silent. Selah
Offer right sacrifices,
and put your trust in the Lord.
“There are many who say, “Who will show us some good?
Lift up the light of your face upon us, O Lord!”
You have put more joy in my heart
than they have when their grain and wine abound.
In peace I will both lie down and sleep;
for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.” (Psalms 4:1-8 ESV)

If we are true followers of Jesus Christ, it should grieve us greatly to see so many people today professing his name, but not honoring him with their lives. They give lip service to the Lord, but they do not obey him. For they are still walking in their sins, still doing what their flesh desires, and their lives are not committed to obedience to the Lord and to holy living. And some of this is due to the false gospel that is being spread, but all people have a choice to obey the Lord or not, so they are without excuse.

But it is true that many lies are being spread today in the name of Christ, and in the name of the gospel of our salvation, and large numbers of people are flocking to these lies because the lies do not demand that they repent of their sins and that they follow Jesus in obedience to his commands and in holy living if they want salvation from sin and eternal life with God. For the lies grant them permission to keep on in their sins while they are being given assurance of salvation from sin and of eternal life with God.

But the truth that Jesus taught and that his NT apostles taught is the opposite of what so many of these liars and deceivers are teaching the people as the “gospel” message. For Jesus said that if anyone would come after him, he must deny self, take up his cross daily (die daily to sin) and follow (obey) him. For if we hold on to our old lives of living in sin and for self, we will lose them for eternity. But if for Jesus’ sake we deny self, die daily to sin, and follow Jesus in obedience, then we have eternal life.

And Jesus also said that not everyone who says to him, “Lord, Lord,” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one DOING the will of God the Father who is in heaven. For many will stand before him on the day of judgment claiming him as “Lord,” and claiming all that they say they did in his name,” but he is going to say to them, “I never knew you. Depart from me you workers of lawlessness,” because they would not obey the Lord, but the flesh, instead (see Luke 9:23-26; Matthew 7:21-23).

For it isn’t those who profess faith in Jesus Christ who are forgiven of their sins and who have the hope of eternal life with God, but it is those who are doing the will of God, in practice, who are obeying our Lord’s commands (New Covenant), who are walking in his ways, and who are living holy lives, pleasing to the Lord, by the grace of God, in the power of God. They are the godly whom God has set apart for himself, who listen to the Lord and who then follow him in obedience (see John 10:27-30). They have eternal life.

“Be angry, and do not sin,” is repeated for us in Ephesians 4:26-27. We are not to let the sun go down on our anger, and we are to give no opportunity for the devil. And how does that work, exactly? Because when we get angry, which could be anger based in sin, or anger based in righteousness, it stirs our emotions to the point to where we might consider revenge or getting even or treating those who wrong us in ways which are ungodly. And unresolved anger can lead to bitterness and hate and to sinful practices.

And to offer right sacrifices to God is to put our full trust in him. For we are to present ourselves to God as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to him. And this is our acceptable worship of God. For we can sing and raise our hands and not be in true worship. And we are to no longer be conformed to the ways of this sinful world, but we are to be transformed in heart and mind of the Spirit of God so that by how we live for the Lord we discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect (Romans 12:1-2).

So true worship of God involves us surrendering our lives to the Lord to do his will, and it involves us letting go of our selfish desires which want to please self, instead of pleasing God. It involves us dying with Christ to sin, not just once, but daily, and us being raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in him, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness, no longer as slaves to sin but now as slaves to God and to his righteousness, for this is God’s will for our lives (Romans 6:1-23; Ephesians 4:17-32).

I Surrender All

Hymn lyrics by Judson W. Van De Venter, 1896
Music by Winfield S. Weeden, 1896

… Lo, we have left all, and have followed Thee. (Mark 10:28)

All to Jesus I surrender,
All to Him I freely give;
I will ever love and trust Him,
In His presence daily live.

All to Jesus I surrender,
Humbly at His feet I bow;
Worldly pleasures all forsaken,
Take me, Jesus, take me now.

All to Jesus I surrender,
Make me, Savior, wholly Thine;
Let me feel the Holy Spirit,
Truly know that Thou art mine.

All to Jesus I surrender,
Lord, I give myself to Thee;
Fill me with Thy love and power,
Let Thy blessing fall on me.

All to Jesus I surrender,
Now I feel the sacred flame;
Oh, the joy of full salvation!
Glory, glory, to His Name!

I surrender all,
I surrender all;
All to Thee, my blessed Savior,
I surrender all.

Sharks circling in feeding frenzy

I'm not sure if this should be posted here or in the news section, but the following news item has a video of sharks circling bait fish near a place called 1770 on the Queensland Coast. It's actually about a shark attack, the second in the last week in Queensland waters. The moving dark shadow in the water is the school of bait fish.

If you're wondering about the town with a number for a name it has to do with Captain James Cook's voyage up the east Australian coast in 1770.

The town of Seventeen Seventy is so named because on 24 May in that year, Lieutenant James Cook, captain of His Majesty's barque HMS Endeavour, came ashore and landed on the beach of Round Hill Creek in the vicinity of the present village.

Many years ago I was on a fishing trip with a Christian group called "Scripture Union". We were on Fraser Island which is south of 1770 and Agnes Water. I was standing on the shore but I could see a feeding frenzy about 100 metres off shore. A bunch of shark fins were moving around and it was obvious they were excited.

So is it generally Methodist leaders' belief to call what's happening in Gaza, Genocide?

A service focused this morning on the plight of the Palestinians. A Palestinian Methodist leader on video used the words genocide referring to the current action by the Israelis. This was just accepted by the service leader. Indeed, she only referred to October 7th once as a burning down of homes and implying that this was contiguous to what is happening in Gaza. The two huge and relevant differences are that Oct 7th directly caused the Israeli response and that Hamas's actions were sadistically carried out.
The dangerous use of the word genocide ignores also that the IDF are seeking out Hamas, NOT seeking to destroy the Palestinian people.
If pastors are going to 'DO' the current Palestine tragedy then there needs to be at least some political nuance and certainly some theology.

Is the mouth a muscle?

...or does "talking" act like a muscle?

For reference: It seems when I say certain written prayers out loud over a period of time, I can easily memorize them without looking them up.

Does our "mouth" get stronger as we repeat the same thing over and over? Is it considered a "muscle" in a sense?

mRNA vaccines may make unintended proteins, but there’s no evidence of harm

New study published in the journal Nature have shown that in some cases mRNA vaccines can lead to the formation of unwanted proteins. The scientists, however, reassure that no connection with side or negative effects has yet appeared, but during the development of future vaccines, it would be appropriate to correct this error.

Time passes in Revelation 6-19

Revelation chapters 6-19 content is about events that will take place in the 7 year 70th week. Let us begin...

---------------------------------------------

In Revelation 11:3 time passes - the two witnesses testimony time is 1260 days. Exactly half of a 2520 day 7 years.

The first half of the 7 years.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then moving into the second half, in Revelation 11:7-13 time passes - the two witnesses are killed and the bodies lay dead for 3 1/2 days before coming back to life and ascending to heaven. That same hour an earthquake hits Jerusalem, and 7,000 die. Then the 7th angel sounds. So all together, I think we can say 4 days.

Then in Revelation 12:7-9 time passes - when the 7th angel sounds, that signals Michael and his angels to cast Satan and his angels down to earth from the second heaven. The amount of time for the war is not stated.

Then in Revelation 12:14 - time passes - the woman given refuge in the wilderness, as Satan's little time left to persecute her is a time, times, a half time.

In Revelation 11:2, time passes - Jerusalem is trodden down by the gentiles 42 months.

In Revelation 13:5 time passes - the beast king rules for 42 months.

----------------------------------------------------

So what we have is...

First half

1260 days - the two witnesses

Second half

first, 4 days - for the two witnesses called up to heaven/the earthquake/the 7th angel sounding. Leaving 1256 days left in the 7 years.

then, unstated time - for the war in the second heaven between Michael/his angels against Satan/his angels

then, time/times/half time - that Satan will have left

other activity in the Second half...

42 months (1256 days) of the beast king's rule, unhampered by the departed two witnesses. Concurrent with the 42 months (1256 days) of the gentiles treading down Jerusalem.
