What gets me are the ones who claim that if the ice caps melt, there'll be massive coastal flooding.

If you fill a glass that has an ice cube in it up to the rim, then let that ice cube melt --- not one drop of water will spill over the edge.

That's because water, unlike anything else, expands when it freezes, and actually takes up more space than in its liquid state.

Thus, should the ice caps melt, the ocean level would actually decrease.

(And yes, I know Antarctica is a continent, not an ice cap.)

And that is the point, the ice on Antarctica and Greenland melting will rase the oceans levels because the ice is on land. As it is the ice water from Greenland is threating to disrupt the warm water conveyer that brings warm water up from the tropics to the US Northeast.

Please learn how physics work before trying to sound smart. The glass of water with a melting ice cube doesn't run over because the ice displaces water equal to its weight.

No, that's not why the water doesn't run over.

First of all, the water doesn't run over because the person who put the water in the glass stopped pouring water in the glass when the glass reached its maximum capacity.

Second of all, as the ice cube melts, it frees up more space as a solid, than it is using as a liquid.

In other words, when it is done surrendering its space as a solid, the liquid that it turned to does not occupy as much.

Look at it another way: suppose you had a glass half-full of snow, and you filled the glass the rest of the way up with water.

When the snow has completely changed to water, the level of the glass has dropped by 1/10th (I believe it is) its volume of snow.

If I do my math right, the glass should only be 55% full.

Yes, that is probably the correct math, but that's still not the point of the previous post. You were claiming that if you filled a glass with an ice-cube already in it to the brim, and then let the ice melt, the glass wouldn't run over. That is correct. However, water taking up more space as a solid has nothing to do with it. It wouldn't run over even if water took up exactly the same amount of space as a solid as a liquid.

AV1661 you ignored my post if the ice is hanging over the water like it is on the ice shelfs then it doesn't matter it will raise the water levels if it drops in
AV1661, would you please answer this girl?

If not, I'll do it.

Yes, and don't forget those evil physicists with their fancy mathematics.

ice is still melting from the little ice age. it has nothing to do with cabon from man. cap and trade and all the GW madness will hurt the poor the most. the whole GW thing reeks of the devil.

Yes, totally. All the physicists and climatologists agree... right? Oh, wait. I forgot, you're the ultimate authority on these matters. Not the scientists.

Yup --- blame the media.

So global warming is not a problem after all?

Is that what you're saying?

We had to give up our fluorocarbons for nothing?

That was about ozone zone depletion, and removing CFCs sorted it out. Not global warming.

But hey, carry on being indignant if you think it accomplishes something.

So NASA is misinforming people too? I saw a talk by an astronaut who's been up into space many times, and she said that she's seen the ice shelfs falling into the ocean. They've been monitoring it for some time now. What makes you qualified to claim she's just lying to somehow make environmental companies rich or something? That's just silly.

Oh, that's right.

I get my reasons to not sleep at night mixed up.

I'm getting too many reasons to look at my neighbors suspiciously.

One is using fluorocarbons, one is driving a car, one won't get the asbestos out of his house, one lets his kids play with toys painted with lead paint, one is using DDT, and a couple of my neighbors have the audacity to drive right past our apartment w/o their seatbelts buckled!

This neighborhood is getting too dangerous to live in.

No, but I'd say if all the ice and snow on this planet melted today, the ocean level would be lower tomorrow.

Just an uneducated guess.

Yeah, AV, that doesn't really work when you're essentially listing off confirmed poisons.

Life is dangerous, and fnorting and rolling your eyes at the scientists who established them as such won't stop those substances from being toxic towards you.

Nice dodge though - you were wrong again. Compelling argument!

Well, like I said, I'm surprised we're still here.

If just one of these doomsday scientists would have been correct, we'd be gone now.

What makes Y2K any different than Helter Skelter?
