Ahh yes lets make more gun laws, the shooter broke most of what is currently in the book and any that some might dream up in the future "but we just gotta have more useless laws"...
bingo. Gun laws only affect those who intend to follow the law.

Maybe do something about the culture but that does not mean gun control.

That's kind of like telling Sid Vicious that we don't want him to die of a heroin overdose so we're going to give him some Lego's to give him something to do to distract himself and keep busy.

Well, the ideal situation for the US (AFAIC) would be to ban private gun ownership.

Not that that would be perfect, but it would go a long way to helping solve the current problem.

However, from discussing guns with folks from the US, I realise that this is unlikely to happen, and I'll just settle for feeling safe living in a country where gun ownership and gun culture isn't widespread.
The second amendment makes that not the answer on two fronts legally nor reasonable for a few reasons.

thank you. Children LEARN behaviors ( for the most part. )
Yes, as written, as seen by observation...

"Fear" seems to be one of the most common things babies and children and adults are taught.

"Dishonesty" too.

I don't believe private gun ownership needs be banned. But a few sensible safety regulations and oversights could slash their mortality figures.
If people would follow those regulations.

That would have helped in the Las Vegas shooting, would it?
You mean have the hotel punish this fine American by telling him to leave his suitcase of rifles and ammo at home?

Not in my free country!

No guns would still prevent mass shootings.
but that is not reasonable to expect when well over 300 million guns are around. Most of which have never been used to commit a crime.

As in "If My people get on their knees, and pray, and turn from their wicked ways ...."
THen when His people prayed , in the early century(-ies),
even though they would not take up a weapon against another man,
their prayers provided (apparentliy)
for the greatest PEACE, ("about the culture") ,
in the Roman area of control (even though the Romans/ gentiles outside of Christ continued themselves unsaved, unregenerated)
than they had in any time previous or future....

The prayers of the few righteous ones (ekklesia immersed in Yeshua's Name),
were fervent and effective at the time for PEACE around them.

You can go places without a car too. What's your point?
that depends on where you live. It is AWFULLY hard to get around the west without some type of transportation other than walking and animals.

Simple, if you want to prevent another mass shooting stop giving everyone and their grandmother a gun. I have a mental health diagnosis and I can go out and buy a gun in this country, it's ridiculous. Canada has on average three mass shootings a year mostly in the bigger cities. Ottawa had a mass shooting three years ago where Parliament Hill got shot up. Here in the US however there are mass shootings every single day. Why? Because, we let ANYONE go out and buy a gun regardless if they're criminals, mentally ill, or just plain wacko let's give them a gun. There's no gun control in this country at all and then we're shocked when a school gets shot up or a local Walmart gets shot up and then we wonder why. If they didn't let anyone own a gun there would be a lot less shootings. But, we can't do that It's too logical and people would complain because they have to have their precious guns. After all It's one of the amendments to the constitution .
Actually, there are laws forbidding several groups of people from having LEGAL access to guns (including the mentally ill, by the way. ( assuming of course that it is known and documented).

So what you're saying is it's the inanimate object that is dangerous not the person who wields/operates it???
thank you a gun sitting on a table will do NOTHING by itself except maybe a VERY rare accidental discharge.

Hi, I don't own a gun but I always thought that I could just go out and buy a gun? I could be wrong.

Only if enforceable. There should never be gun free zones where you don't have control of the borders. Let me use some examples:

A government building: Yes! Armed security is common here and entry points are controlled.

A city: No! You don't control the borders, there is no one preventing entry and no screening of those entering.

A country: Yes! You can control your borders and screen those entering.

A state: No! There are no mandatory and universal stops at state borders, nor state border security.

A college campus: Maybe! If you can strictly control access and have armed security, than sure. If you lack control of the area though, no.

A college building: Yes! You can easily control and screen people entering.

Basically the goal is to never have it so that a criminal can bring in a gun (at least without considerable effort and risk of being caught) into an area where law abiding citizens are disarmed.

What I don't understand is in some states (like Texas) we're allowed to own automatic weapons. What the heck do we need to own an automatic weapon for unless it's shooting up a school or something? Shouldn't a 9MM be good enough for most people instead of having to own a gun that's made and designed for warfare?
because the second amendment just because someone has it does not mean they mean harm. I know people have SEVERAL guns who have never shot and killed anyone in their lives and at least one of them is pushing three score ( 60 years old.)

If people would follow those regulations.

You could make similar arguments about things like speeding. The fact that people speed does not mean we should remove speed limits. Regulations do not always stop people from doing things, but they do mean that we can slap extra penalties on people who fail to follow them.

I didn't mean to imply that everyone that owned a gun was a risk But, if we want to lower the chances of shootouts happening shouldn't we be controlling guns instead of just giving a gun to everyone? That was my point.

Who says I'm advocating for guns? Just showing the gun control crowd how silly their argument is cause if someone wants to hurt/kill someone else they will find a way, no matter what laws are in place or are enacted in the near future. Seems to me the guy driving the truck was more efficient, death toll over 80 and accomplished in less time and he spent way less money...
another "option" if someone REALLY wanted to kill many people would be lethal gas in a very public place.

Amazing coincidence? Or planned :) ?

Just like God's Word , TORAH, - it's not important to those who ignore God, only to those who are His children.
