Philippians 2:13 does not say that continuance in the faith is a gift of God.
Context:
12 "...work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
13 For it is God which works in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure."
(Philippians 2:12-13).
Why would God's Word tell us to work out our salvation with fear and trembling if it was some kind of automatic thing? There is also no words in this passage that says, "continuance in the faith is a gift of God." That would be adding to Scripture. No Bible verse says that faith is a gift of God. Grace is a gift of God (Ephesians 2:8) (John 3:16), but we have to have faith (of our own free will) to access it (under the drawing of God).
Jason, we have libertarian free will, but Phil.2:12-13 makes no mention of anything "automatic", nor does it speak of "free will". The only reference there to any "will" is that - God - works in you "to will...". Without that - gift - of His grace "willing" you you could neither "will" or "do" - anything - "of his good pleasure". It's only - if & when - He does such a "work in you", that His "good pleasure" may be done.
Where does Scripture say "we have to have faith (of our own free will)"? Faith & repentance are gifts of God:
Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent." (John 6:29)
John 6:29 doesn't say "This is the work of Jason's free will, that he believes...". Glory be to Jason.
When something is revealed (made known) to you by God, as a gift of His grace, you believe it:
Mt.16:16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. 17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
Jesus didn't say, "blessed are you, Peter, for you made a freewill decision to believe. Praise Peter."
Faith is a gift of God:
"Paul knew that the abundant grace of God was the source of his own faith. He said in
1 Timothy 1:13-14, "I was formerly a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent aggressor. Yet I was shown mercy because I acted ignorantly in unbelief; but the grace of our Lord overflowed [for me] with the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus." He was an unbeliever. But then grace overflowed to him with faith."
"So he knew this was the case with every other believer too. He said to the Philippians, "To you it has been given for Christ's sake, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake" (
Philippians 1:29). This is why he thanked God and not human resourcefulness for the faith he saw in his churches: "We ought always to give thanks to God for you, brethren, as is fitting, because your faith is greatly enlarged" (
2 Thessalonians 1:3). We thank God for the enlargement of faith because "God has allotted to each [his own] measure of faith" (
Romans 12:3)."
God Has Allotted to Each a Measure of Faith
"God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith" (Romans 12:3)
Romans 12:3
For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but think of yourself with sober judgment, according to the measure of faith God has given you.
1 Cor.4:7 For who makes you any different? And what do you have that you did not receive? And if also you did receive
it, why do you boast as not having received
it?
John 3:27
John replied, "A man can receive only what is given him from heaven.
1 Corinthians 15:10
But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which
was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.
1 Corinthians 5:6
Your glorying
is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?
Does faith come by freewill or by hearing? Rom.10:17.
Luke 22:31-32. "Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded to sift you like wheat; but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned again, strengthen your brothers."
"I believe; help my unbelief" (
Mark 9:24). "Increase our faith!" (
Luke 17:5).
Repentance is a gift of God:
Acts 11:18b God has given to the Gentiles also the repentance that leads to life.
2 Tim.2:25 in gentleness disciplining those opposing, lest ever God may give them repentance unto a knowledge of
the truth,
Acts 5:31 God exalted Him to His right hand
as Prince and Savior, to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.
James 1:16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers.
17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, with whom there is no change or shifting shadow.
18 He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we would be a kind of firstfruits of His creation.
