“You know what I love? I love seeing some young conservatives because I know it’s not easy. (Crowd applauds and shouts.) Keep up that fight. Bring it to your schools. You don’t have to be indoctrinated by these loser teachers that are trying to sell you on socialism from birth. You don’t have to do it. Because you can think for yourselves. They can’t.” (Crowd applauds and shouts again.) – Donald Trump Jr. in Texas on Feb. 11, 2019

For teachers around the globe, this was a chilling moment.

In a stadium filled with people chanting “USA, USA,” the son of the president of the United States called for hostility toward teachers because of their so-called political leanings. This is a message you would expect in an authoritarian regime, not at a rally for the U.S. president.

Is the USA really this close to the abyss?

It sounds like he was attacking teachers who promote politically liberal views.

"these loser teachers" is painting with a very broad brush.

"these loser teachers that are trying to sell you on socialism from birth" is a little more specific.

Apparently the apple didn't fall far from the tree because he's just like his father in regards to insulting and disparaging the people he doesn't like, particularly liberals in this case. Speaking as a liberal and as a mother of seven children, I don't think children should be indoctrinated one way or another in a public school. I think both political views and religious beliefs should be left out of the public school system. One of the reasons why I removed my three oldest children from public school some years ago was because I didn't want them indoctrinated in the Americanism nonsense that I saw being pushed while they were in school. There were also a couple of teachers who were much too vocal about their personal evangelical Christian faith too. I don't think teachers should be allowed to push their personal religious beliefs or their political views onto young children in a public school.

The Trump family is clearly anti-education. Trump demonstrates this every day.
Education by gov't based schools is called indoctrination - the very definition of anti-education.

Its always amazing to me how people can become very offended if someone like Donald Trump, Jr. refers to a general category of people as "losers" but, judging from the reaction, it is perfectly all right with all manner of Americans to have the president of the United States called a fascist, racist, imbecile, subhuman, and the like. :sigh:

Are you suggesting we disband publicly funded education? That way only the wealthy will be able to educate their children and we can perpetuate our very own class system in America.

I think I will continue to support public education.

The president has done or said things to earn all those epithets (except subhuman - I never called him that).

However, generalizing an entire group of people without evidence is not appropriate. But, also very Trump-like.

I didn't write we should all abandon it; I merely pointed out that that which you support is anti-education. If you wish to support anti-education/indoctrination, that is your prerogative. I supported home-schooling and taught my children from the Word of God.

I also have a home schooled child, but not all parents are able to do that for their children.

So, it would also be all right to attack teachers who promote politically conservative views? Comments like Trump Jr.'s have the effect of undermining the educational system. And, just to be clear, teacher's at the elementary and secondary level should not be promoting any particular political philosophy.

I agree; that is why we cannot abolish public education but we must remember that parents have the ultimate responsibility to educate their children. We cannot leave it to the public schools to inculcate our children.

Don't worry about that. It's already a 'done deal' in most schools.

Those horrible liberal ideals like reading, writing, math, science ...

The horror!

I agree. The problem is that the number of parents who leave it entirely to the schools is far too large. In my 40 year career in public education almost every time I encountered a problem student there was also problem parenting.

Amish proverb --- "Children are wonderful imitators. They will almost always turn out to be just like their parents in spite of our best efforts to teach them good manners."
