It has to do with everyone whose ancestors were/are immigrants that produced offspring. If you get your head out of you know where, you will see that it is only the natives who were already here when Europeans arrived that are legally here in the U.S. Imagine if the natives rose up and told all of European descent that they were no longer citizens even if they were born here.
If you get your head out of you know where, you will see the difference between legal and illegal. Trump's proposal is directed at those in the country illegally. It doesn't have anything to do with legal immigrants. So unless Trump's ancestors or my ancestors were illegal aliens, you're making a false equivalency.

What has changed? The only thing I have seen is the political machine has pretty much given up on compromise and tolerance, while using poor immigrants who are simply seeking stability as pawns in a vicious game which ends up killing people.
There's a difference between an immigrant and an illegal alien. The idea is we're supposed to pretend there isn't a difference.

Today, the right doesn't see a difference. Florida and Texas took asylum seekers, called them illegal aliens and transported them to democratic states.

The lack of empathy from the right is amazing.

The lack of empathy from the right is sickening.
What's the difference between those coming into the US from the same foreign countries calling themselves asylum seekers and illegal aliens? How do you separate the two?

One is legal, the other is not. It is really easy to understand.

They call themselves asylum seekers, but it is up to the USA to grant that asylum, making them legal.

NO! The American experiment is based on NOT having a dictator.
A dictator could base all his decisions in righteousness rather than having to compromise with the portion of the population who are sinners and infidels and dangerous foreigners.

So the difference between those coming into the US from the same region being here legally or illegally, is whether or not they say "I'm an asylum seeker".

Hitler was a strong man who knew nothing about righteousness. Once a dictator is put in place, their words are law.

Sorry, but nothing in that says anything about being legal or illegal. Do you have another thought about the words?
That poem was written in conjunction with immigrants coming into the US through Ellis Island where they were processed into becoming legal citizens of the US. Also it's simply just a poem written by a private citizen in the 19th century. It's wasn't crafted by the US government and its entire citizenry.

By court proceedings that evaluate their claim of asylum.

I know the history. And I also know that the words are meaningless today considering half of the nation wants to close it's borders...shut the door and become isolationists.

The need for immigrants today in America is just as strong as it was back in the day. The immigration system needs reformed to allow people in to fill the jobs Americans are unwilling to do.

no. I explained it but you miss the point.
You're right. You said it's up to the US to grant them asylum. But you also brought up those who were not granted asylum, calling it a sickening lack of empathy. So is that it's a sickening lack of empathy for the US to not grant asylum. And aren't asylum seekers required to become legal citizens if they intend on staying in the US? How many of those asylum seekers do you think were actually planning on going back home?

Wow, you took what I wrote and made it whatever you wanted it to be.

I suggest you take some time and research what asylum in America really is.
