  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

In principle, health care can be paid for, since there's enough money now going into health care to pay for it. But making a transition work in practice is going to be really hard. What worries me at least as much is that it requires sensible long-term decision-making. I worry that the first time Republicans take over again they'll intentionally sabotage the system.
Or more realistically, the next time they take over they'll try to sabotage it again.

This kind of behavior more than anything is why these sort of proposals "can't" work.

And our system is working well? Without the changes from the ACA we have millions of Americans without access to healthcare, we pay almost 2X more per capita for healthcare of any developed nation on earth but don't have better health outcomes. We have an entire generation that will likely NEVER have a time in their lives when they aren't paying off student loans.

Well yeah, but who cares if I don't have health care or an education now. When I magically become a multi-billionaire, think of all the imaginary taxes I won't imaginary have to pay then. Did you think of that, Mr. Smart-pants :)

Oh, and also can't vote for the party who is looking out for the middle class because FEMA Death Camps and SOCIALISM!

Wait, how is that not what Republicans offer the rich? LOL.
Add in the promise of stopping people they'll never meet from getting married and you also have what they offer to get people to vote against their best interests.

That's the main danger to a single-payer system. What happens when Republicans do the same thing to all of us, hoping they can convince people that the system has failed?
Who do you trust more with your health care - GOP politicians or some bean counter at the company you work for trying to pick the cheapest insurance that won't get them sued? Tough choices.

I have heard folks on Medicare complain about copays, costs, and being complicated...trying to figure out which plan to get...

I've heard people complain about private insurance as well, but you'd never accept that as an argument for a complete government takeover of it.

I'd rather base public policy on research and valid statistics rather than random anecdotes.

also know a pastor refuses to get Medicare because he would rather his church foot the bill for regular insurance

People make bad decisions, film at 11.

Medicare can be very confusing, especially trying to gamble on which Medicare Advantage plan will work best. But it could be a template for expanding coverage. BTW, I’ll reiterate that private insurance companies do all the network development and claims processing, not the government. I have regular Medicare and have more provider choices than my employer plan did. And my deductible isn’t three months take home pay.

Wait til pastor has a nice big bill. I would love to see how the congregants respond. Unless this is a cult, it won’t be pretty.

And insurance companies make billions in profits every year. 20 million going to one CEO of just one health insurance company, several years ago, pretty much says it all.
and those programs are great, but just free college education just for being a citizen of a particular place no. The place for that is k-12 ( which of course is already in place) If the parents/student want any before and especially after that pay for it or at least otherwise be required to put in some effort to EARN assistance.

Disagree with that. JC and vo-tech should be free for up to two years.

One man does not a host make, unless he is Samson.

I do love my VA, and I have used it since 1991, and have completely relied on it since I retired. I have no complaints.

Hi jacob,

That's good, but I'd have to assume that you haven't seen a lot of the uproar concerning the VA and the level of care a lot of veterans believe they are receiving. Sure, I'm ok with their being, out of several million veterans, some, and perhaps a lot, who receive what they believe to be reasonable care. But there does seem to be a growing number of veterans who aren't so happy with that care.

God bless,
In Christ, ted

I agree some are unhappy, miamited, but I don't know that it is "a growing number . . .".

My VA in SLC is better than what I have seen at Shreveport and Dallas.

On the other hand, the outpatient clinics in Lufkin and Tyler, both in Texas, are outstanding, and they are generally better than the private practices (of which I have some familiarity) in those two towns plus Nacogdoches and Jasper.

I’d like to see more apprenticeship and technical education earlier than college

We need to get out of the education box and train young people based on their aptitudes instead of college prep being the assumed best track.

Tennessee —under a GOP administration — is now providing free community college for everyone eligible for admission.

Free post high school training could actually pay off in a better skilled more adaptable work force.

In effect, we'd be extending our public school system by two years.
why though? If you are not going to REQUIRE that then no public school pay for it earn it or do not expect it. This by the way includes pre-K ( I know there are some government funded of those too). It would suit me if they ONLY had public school provided for schooling that is mandated. This by the way this could even include upper high-school old enough to drop out earn it or pay for it would be OK.

I have no problem with that as long as there are requirements for getting/maintaining it. For example, in GA we have HOPE ( the way it works is we have HOPE and ZELL Miller). Both are funded by the lottery to get Zell one must have I believe a 3.7 coming out of high school AND have earned a certain score on the SAT or ACT. For HOPE one must have a 3.0 and either I believe have a certain score on the test OR have a certain class rank ( like top 50% or something. HOPE pays for school meanwhile ZELL I believe covers school and books. To keep HOPE once you are in college you must maintain a 3.0 ( with an hours cap) to keep/get ZELL you must keep I believe it is a 3.2 or 3.3GPA ( with the same hours cap) If you fall off of the GPA requirements ( checked every so many hours) you lose the scholarship and may regain it only one time, so if you lose it a second time that is it. I am fine with such programs that require something of the students for the "free" money.
