  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Kamela Harris had made her priorities clear. She wants

1) Medicare for all
2) free college education for all
3) a middle class tax cut
4) the rich to pay for the above
5) some amount of gun legislation

===========
IMHO, Democrats must not propose a corporate tax increase. A modest increase in top individual tax rates is fine (note that some want it to be 70%). I believe that any plan must add up, be revenue neutral.

And in addition to the above, there must be a focus on opioid addiction, job training, dealing with climate change, and criminal justice reform.

This is why I always vote Republican. Otherwise, the promise is, "Vote for me and I'll give you lots of stuff at the expense of whoever my party can demonize as the bad guys". It's division politics.

The Republicans borrowing to give a trillion dollar tax gift to the rich wasn't any better policy.

"Common income" is already being used or tested in several countries, and some cities and states of the USA.

The methodology/ system / of the beast is almost ready to be enforced further.

The government shutdown made millions of more citizens , men, women, and children, more ready for 'free' government money/assistance,
even at the cost of their souls.

I agree. It won't work. During the last few presidents, Democrats have actually done better with the budget than Republicans (because Republicans do tax cuts that they can't pay for). Let's hope that happens in 2020 as well.

Rich? You mean businesses that employ people?

I can't argue much with a 70% tax on any income above the first $10 million made in any given year. It is important that that first $10 million in income is taxed at the lower rates. I see even less issue with it since people who make that much money will find loopholes that will substantially cut that 70% rate.

Looks like a good platform. Will no doubt need to be balanced with spending cuts elsewhere. Maybe if the US could pull its troops out of expensive overseas conflicts (Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen), that would help?

Hi all,

I just don't understand when people say that things will never work that seem to work pretty well in other places. Why is that?

Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Slovenia and France are all nations that offer 'free' higher learning, (this means college or university level education). These are all reasonably well off countries as far as the standard of living of their people.

There are literally dozens of nations that offer some kind of 'free' overall medical care.

Are we really just not as smart as them? Can we really not figure out how to do good things for our citizenry as they have done? Why is it that we can build the strongest and most expensive military to fight wars and kill people, but we can't figure out how to help people better?

God bless,
In Christ, ted

The services will work. Every other civilized country does them. It's the coupling with a tax cut that I find hard to believe.

Depends how you define "middle class" and how you structure taxes overall. Australia does most of the above (university isn't free for everybody but our system does make it affordable for everybody), and while our overall tax system isn't perfect, it seems to be able to carry this sort of approach reasonably well.

I agree. We can and I think we should do it. But we need to be honest about the difficulty in financing it. There are also going to be tremendous lobbying and other political muscle opposed. I'm not sure the other countries faced quite what the US will.

Democrats pretty much all support these goals. The question is which one can convince people that they can actually deliver, and run the country effectively.

The first two particularly the second should not be. There is no such thing as free, and moreover people are more likely to care if they have to pay for it. In other words, not all people are like this, but like college people that pay for it or at least have to maintain a certain GPA for a scholarship they will pull their own weight and want to do well.

In principle, health care can be paid for, since there's enough money now going into health care to pay for it. But making a transition work in practice is going to be really hard. What worries me at least as much is that it requires sensible long-term decision-making. I worry that the first time Republicans take over again they'll intentionally sabotage the system.

As I understand it, if you set up a government run health system it would actually be much cheaper than what you have now, where medical providers try to profit from insurance companies...

I think it's a great platform, and I fully support a 70% tax for billionaires.

It's funny that this is popping up because I had a very similar conversation with a family member this afternoon. He thought it was an "outrage" that Liz Warren pointed out that if you're wealthy enough to afford a superyacht, you should pay more in taxes.

My response was "cry me a river". There are people who graduate college in debt and who can't afford health coverage, but we're worried because billionaires and corporations might pay more in taxes? Give me a break.

Yes, but it's not quite so simple. More people would be covered, and existing people would be covered for more things.
