And now ponder a little what that means. What Tolkien - a man who had both studied mythology and wrote "mythology" ("mythology" that he himself identified as "fiction") - meant to convey in that statement.
Take into account that stories of that kind contain obvious "untruths"... consider that not every "story" is a "myth" or a "legend".
Consider the different levels of "truth" that can be conveyed by stories... from factual statements about the real world to allegories.
