Should I put a Background on this Drawing?

Hi,

I have recently started to rework some of my old drawings (I finished this portraitt in April of last year). Although I'm not too happy with how it turned out (there are a lot of mistakes ), I do think I can improve it a little by adding some sort of design or blur to the background.

Staedtler Mars Lumograph Graphite Pencils (layered, 2H, HB, 2B, 4B, 6B) and General's Charcoal Pencil (4B), Strathmore 400 Series Drawing Paper.)

Should I draw some sort of background?

No. I don’t think so. I like it as is. I’d be more likely to invest in it like it is now versus a competing background of the subject.

This is excellent work. It doesn't need any background. Maybe just finish the arms, at least with an outline. Sometimes deliberately unfinished drawings or paintings are more interesting than full renderings.

I would not add the background. It looks good as is.

By the way, how do you like the Staedtler Mars Lumograph pencils, I hear good things bout them, but have not tried them.

I concur with the other posters about a background, as it would distract from the subject. Very impressive rendering, by the way.
