We will hear many a man (or woman) say what they personally think should or should not constitute lust, or what their father (or mother says) of some experience they have seen when they were young. People will even cite what they learned from reading the dictionary or a psychology book. Natural man may throw in a few choice euphemisms (words have meaning) around to mock God's name while they argue for their position in favor of God's truth. We may try to convince ourselves that we can control themselves (alone, by ourselves) using the psychology of man to justify our claim. But, here's truth. Here's what God says [to answer the basic question of whether or not lust is always a sin]:
Matthew 5:28: [Jesus Christ declares,] "But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart."
Galatians 5:16: I [the apostle Paul] say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
2 Peter 2:10: [T]he Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment, and especially those who walk according to the flesh in the lust of uncleanness and despise authority. . .
1 John 2:16-17: For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.
Romans 1:27: [T]he men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.
The Bible makes it sufficiently certain that lust involves a longing or a desire to do something that is sinful, generally pertaining to illicit sexual relationships such as adultery and homosexuality. The Bible also indicates that lust can pertain to matters other than those having a sexual connotation. And, since the Bible teaches that it is a sin for us to do anything that keeps us from living in accordance with the will of God, lust is always a sin, because it invariably prevents us from living according to God’s will. Furthermore, even if a longing or desire does not involve lust, it is sinful if it prevents us from living in accordance with the will of God.
There's good news though people. God saves sinners. He sent his Son, Jesus Christ into the world to be the salvation for those who would believe on the name of the LORD. God welcomes those who repent and turn from sin, those who trust and obey the LORD.
