New Research Suggests Some Climate Data May Be Tainted

Al Gore likes to say that the science of climate change is “settled.” But of course, science, almost by definition, is never settled.

A
study by meteorologist Anthony Watts found that almost 90 percent of the 1221 weather stations in the U.S. did not meet the National Weather Service’s setting standards, which requires that they be at least 100 feet from any artificial heat source or radiating surface. You can see some of the most egregious violators here. To deal with this defective information, climate scientists, have “adjusted” the data to solve this problem. Invariably, these adjustments have made earlier data show lower temperatures, and recent data show higher ones.

To develop reliable data, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) placed 114 state-of-the-art weather stations relatively evenly spaced about the lower 48 states. They were carefully sited to be away from urban areas, which are heat islands, airports, which can be affected by jet exhaust, etc.

The system became operative in 2005. Now, realclearenergy.com is
reporting that there has been no increase in average temperatures in the continental United States over the last 14 years, as measured by these new stations. If anything, overall temperatures are slightly cooler than they were.

^ That the name of the blog the link goes to & also a heck of a good expression for global warming deniers. It is true that science is never "settled" but it does get to the point where it's sufficient to become established. We know the Earth isn't flat, for example. Though some folks still insist that it is.

A couple of points here:
1. The "corrected" data for the same timeframe generally agrees - since 2005, the temperature in the US has been relatively stable.

2. You're only looking at land temperatures for the contiguous US. Contrary to popular belief, the United States does not constitute the entirety of Planet Earth. The global average temperature is rising. And before you attribute that to "heat islands" as well, we can see the physical effects in the melting of glaciers and ice caps. Not to mention that the world's largest heatsink, the ocean, is getting warmer as well.

This is a good article to read if you're interesting in the actual science behind error analysis and temperature data adjustments: Thorough, not thoroughly fabricated: The truth about global temperature data

1) Anthony Watts knows little about climate though he plays a meteorologist on TV. No schooling though. At least, he didn't even manage to finish his meteorology degree.
2) This hard hitting piece of work is copywrited 2009. Is there a reason this is on CF at all? I mean, this has also been addressed ad naseum.
3) GLOBAL warming is not USA warming. That truly basic understanding will get figured out though. I'm not worried.

Is the USA a part of the globe? How does one separate one country from the rest of the world and isolate in terms of warming? Besides, the Universal Church of AGW believes as a basic tenant that the US is experiencing global warming. All of your favorite leftwing news sites agree. So if the US has trouble with an aging and inaccurate temperature system, what about the rest of the globe? There's a lot of money to made with the pseudoscience of global warming. So much so that they had to change the name of the agenda to "climate change" to account for the fact that there is in fact cooling going on.

That oughta suggest to you something about the quality of the author's scholarship.

As an amusing aside, he wrote a book call "An Empire of Wealth", which he describes as:

https://www.amazon.com/Empire-Wealt...060505125/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

Throughout time, from ancient Rome to modern Britain, the great empires built and maintained their domination through force of arms and political power. But not the United States. America has dominated the world in a new, peaceful, and pervasive way - through the continued creation of staggering wealth.

The Spanish, Mexicans and Hawaiians would probably disagree with that.

I hope there's some extra context in the book that make that statement less ridiculous than it seems.

The 'study' is from 2009. Once again we can use our powers of hindsight to see how it all turned out.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) investigated the matter. While acknowledging the suboptimal conditions of many stations, NOAA concluded in 2010 that any bias had been nearly eliminated by their models, which compared stations over regions and time.[54] To the very limited extent that there was any measurement bias, it was in the opposite direction of what Watts expected: stations that were considered poorly situated reported slightly cooler temperatures.

Yes, but the study by Watts that it cites is from 2009 and has been thoroughly debunked.

The first "study" is by Watts, but the "new report" is an essay by the director of the Heartland Institute, James Taylor (also not a climate scientist) at RealClearEnergy.com:
JT said:
The USCRN has eliminated the need to rely on, and adjust the data from, outdated temperature stations. Strikingly, as shown in the graph below, USCRN temperature stations show no warming since 2005 when the network went online. If anything, U.S. temperatures are now slightly cooler than they were 14 years ago.

That's a fair point. However we have obliterated the substance at least 4 times since I arrived back in Canada (which was this studies copyright date by the way) and you didn't seemed swayed by a substantive discussion with facts and data and stuff.
In the meantime, a broken clock IS right twice a day, but it is wrong 3598 times a day.

The article in the link is dated 09/03/2019
that's nice. Click the link to the study that you yourself linked to.

Is the USA a part of the globe? How does one separate one country from the rest of the world and isolate in terms of warming
good question. Could you answer it for me? Because this study only discusses the US which is being isolated in terms of warming.

Besides, the Universal Church of AGW believes as a basic tenant that the US is experiencing global warming
Your verbiage use is distressing and confusing. They are experiencing the effects of global warming. The GLOBE is experiencing global warming.

So if the US has trouble with an aging and inaccurate temperature system, what about the rest of the globe?
I do want to acknowledge and let you know that i appreciate your inclusion of the word "if". Because it doesn't so the question is moot.

There's a lot of money to made with the pseudoscience of global warming
.
Teehee. Really? More than the 4.65trillion that the entirety of the fossil fuel industry is worth?

So much so that they had to change the name of the agenda to "climate change" to account for the fact that there is in fact cooling going on.
I'm curious if you remember any of the other times this simplistic, incorrect argument has been dealt with on this site. Because it comes up in every AGW thread and then all the skeptics go into hiding.

You all better not DARE suggest Global Warming 1) is flawed, and 2) is not anthropogenic. With the way humans have dismissed and admonished people for disagreeing with the status quo, for there to be any academic or social shift away the current paradigm set up for the last 60 years would mean humans, and humanity wasted this time allowing other people to tell them what is right.

Humans will learn one day... in the far future... how NOT to be intellectually and psychologically tossed around like ocean debris. Humans let other humans dictate their lives, and then complain when it doesn't add up, and when the time/energy they have invested doesn't work out. Or, some people just don't care and ignore their exploitation by other humans.

Debate and logic are psychological carapace; distractions that satisfy self instead of confronting what is destroying us all. [Human] logic is what handicaps most people and allows them to be easily exploited and caught off gaurd. We won't ever stop repeating history.

Hi friend. That's right.

All the time, every week -- some big areas around the globe are hotter than average for that time of year, and other parts are cooler than average for that time of year.

Always. Because big masses of air move around, carrying warmer air some places, and cooler air some other places.

Here's a map of temperatures compared to normal for a certain day:

nasa-map.jpg

See how most of the U.S. (most of North America) is on this day cooler than average for that particular day of the year?

But over in Eastern Europe/Russia, on this day the temperature was warmer than normal for that day of the year.

You couldn't conclude much about the global temperature for that day in the graphic based on only the continental U.S. alone any more than you could by having only the temperature from Russia alone.

...
Where I live:

One interesting thing that has happened in the last few years here where I live in the Upper Midwest is cool summers.

That means that cool air from the north came down during the summer here in the Upper Midwest more than normal in the past 125 years.

When cool air from the north comes here....

...then that same air that left an area up north to come down here....is being replaced up north by air that itself came from somewhere else.
(sometimes further north and still cool, but sometimes instead from the east or west and warmer; it's not predictable).

Make sense?

Ok, if that does make sense, then you still have entirely open the question of how much global temperatures are changing, on trend, from the average.

One kind of measure is by measuring from around the whole world, and over an entire year.

The 'global' temperature is made by using all measurements from around the globe, and also since the 1970s additionally depends on satellite measurements, which of course are not ground based, and aren't subject to local heat sources changing the temperature of the thermometer.

Here's information from the U.S. NOAA for global temperatures:

I hope that answer just above was helpful, but let's talk a minute about what really matters. :)

Christ said:

Luke 21:25 There will be signs in the sun and moon and stars, and on the earth dismay among the nations, bewildered by the roaring of the sea and the surging of the waves.

He said it. Therefore it will happen.

As a 100% certainty.

I consider man-made global warming to be the biggest con game in history.

(Genesis 8:22 [KJV]) While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.
