Worries over sudden ocean warming spike

1682698712390.png
The world's oceans have suddenly spiked much hotter and well above record levels in the last few weeks, with scientists trying to figure out what it means and whether it forecasts a surge in atmospheric warming.
Some researchers think the jump in sea surface temperatures stems from a brewing and possibly strong natural El Nino warming weather condition plus a rebound from three years of a cooling La Nina, all on top of steady global warming that is heating deeper water below. If that's the case, they said, record-breaking ocean temperatures this month could be the first in many heat records to shatter.
From early March to this week, the global average ocean sea surface temperature jumped nearly two-tenths of a degree Celsius (0.36 degree Fahrenheit), according to the University of Maine's Climate Reanalyzer, which climate scientists use and trust. That may sound small, but for the average of the world's oceans — which is 71% of Earth's area —to rise so much in that short a time, “that's huge,” said University of Colorado climate scientist Kris Karnauskas. “That's an incredible departure from what was already a warm state to begin with.”
Climate scientists have been talking about the warming on social media and amongst themselves. Some, like University of Pennsylvania's Michael Mann, quickly dismiss concerns by saying it is merely a growing El Nino on top of a steady human-caused warming increase....
“La Nina's temporary grip on rising global temperatures has been released,” NOAA oceanographer Mike McPhaden said in an email. “One result is that March 2023 was the second highest March on record for global mean surface temperatures."
If El Nino makes its heavily forecasted appearance later this year “what we are seeing now is just a prelude to more records that are in the pipeline,” McPhaden wrote.
Karnauskas said what's likely to happen will be an “acceleration” of warming after the heat has been hidden for a few years.

As someone in the field, the oceans are not boiling. We have just completed a 3 year La Nina stint which is actually a cool patch that goes from Peru to Australia. The remains of this patch now in retreat may have partially contributed to the cold rains & snow on the west coast. Normally it is El Nino which brings Ca any rain. Cool SSTs are now in retreat & it appears an El Nino might be advancing. This is caused by weakening of the trade winds & downwelling off Peru. In the subtropical latitudes ocean waters are fairly warm as it is while in the tropics will get well into the 80s.

Frank the sun heats up the ocean all the time, what's the big deal?
Are we ready for climate change refuges?
It's already become an issue, and even more so with with the rise of sea levels. Even with out the ice melts, which will happen, the expansion caused by the increase in temperature is a big deal in lives lost from the rise in sea levels. And on top of that, add in the damage from even more violent storms than typically experienced. It is a pretty bid deal.

Can you give me an example of a region or country that is being flooded or submerged due to climate change currently?

According to past conversations I've had here, God splitting Pangaea (Eden) up into five major continents would have created enough energy to boil the oceans dry.

Yet, in His protective way, God protected the earth from its own fiery furnace.

Daniel 3:27 And the princes, governors, and captains, and the king's counsellors, being gathered together, saw these men, upon whose bodies the fire had no power, nor was an hair of their head singed, neither were their coats changed, nor the smell of fire had passed on them.

Does anyone really think God can't do the same with the earth?

By your question, are you suggesting that there will be no sea rise as the oceans warm and the ice melts? The concern is our future, or I'd sure hope so.

But to answer your question, other than all of the abnormal rain caused floods going on all over the Earth, I can't point to any actual submerged area. That said, today there are areas that have a measurable sea level rise. It has begun.

Oh no, the ocean is heating up by half a degree. It's the end of the world.

The ocean is what we physicists call "very large" and each cubic centimeter has a heat capacity that's roughly 5,000 times that of an equivalent volume of air. The time-honored illustration is to imagine sticking your hand in a 100 Celsius oven versus sticking it into a 100 Celsius pot of water.

The amount of energy pumped into the earth to make this happen is staggering.

So if the oceans increase their temperature by 1 degree Celsius then they will start boiling? Like what do you mean here?

No, but it might mean a lot of people die in heatwaves, super-sized storms, and a lot of coral reefs might bleach.
But hey - it's all fun and games until someone loses an eye right? Or in this case it could be a family member that dies in a heatwave or flood. (El Nino is a global weather phenomenon that sometimes breaks records when it's big. This one looks BIG! As in record breaking!)

I remember once seeing a comic strip that showed a woman looking out the window at an approaching tornado.

Husband: Quick! Let's get in the basement!
Wife: Can't! Radon gas!
Husband: Then let's get in the bathroom!
Wife: Can't! Lead in the pipes!
Husband: Then let's get in the attic!
Wife: Can't! Asbestos in the ceiling!

So they just sit down and ride it out.

You’ve just been told in the very post you are replying to. Which means either you are deliberately ignoring it or you do not understand it.
