If he was truly remorseful he would have deleted the tweets.

I'm pretty much underwhelmed by our collective evolution in regards to social media vs the real world.

Think about the whole of your life and all of the stupid things you have said and done. Imagine if you were held responsible for a bad joke you said a decade ago? I mean, seriously, are you really going to sit behind your computers and tell us all you've never said or done anything just remarkably stupid? Similarly, that you did not learn from your stupidity.

When I was 13 I said a crass and hurtful and disgusting joke/comment to a girl that liked me. It completely destroyed our relationship and we were never friends from that day forward. I learned from that incident, that was a watermark moment for me. I became a different person because of that mistake.

I would hate for someone to dig up that joke decades later and use that as a basis to fire me.

but that is the current climate of social media, it is disgusting and it needs to stop.

Uhhggg. i just hate how everyone is an expert on human behavior online while simultaneously forgetting what it means to be actually human. I can't stand all these logical fallacy arguments, false equivalencies, ad hominems, strawmen, uhhggg, I hate it so much.

Collectively, we are all in a stone throwing war despite us all living in glass houses. It needs to stop.

I wonder how many on the left will take your advice regarding Trump.

Actually quite the opposite. Having publicly apologized for them, to delete them could have easily have been seen as trying to cover up a past fault. By leaving them there, he was accepting his culpability. The only people who are going to see years old tweets, are people who go looking for them.

Wow, you're really obsessed with Trump in this story, despite it not being about him.

I actually watched a big chunk of this happen in real-time on Friday morning.

From what I gather, Gunn was shooting his mouth off and moralizing on certain things, so people went back looking through his social media history. When it was determined that there were a *massive* amount of these postings, it was made public.

Some prominent people on Twitter heard of his and gave it a signal boost, and off it went.

I'm not obsessed with the man at all. I just marvel at the duplicity of the left, i.e., how they complain so bitterly when they fall prey to the toxic environment they create.

Like I said, this is a Sam Seder moment and has nothing to do with a "toxic environment." This is not related to left-right politics except to rapists like Mike Cernovich, who ironically is guilty of the conduct he condemns (i.e., jokes about rape).

I have no idea who San Seder is, but this is exactly about the toxic environment the left has created. It's coming back on them now, and they don't like it. Too bad.

Sam Seder made a joke, Mike Cernovich tried to get him fired, he was fired, but upon finding out it was Mike Cernovich trolling, he was re-hired. The irony of your repetitive use of "the left" and "toxic environment" is that the last person fired due to statements about pedophilia was Milo Yiannopoulos, who was run out because conservatives went after him.

Nothing to do with Rosanne... never watched the show. I was referring to the Hollywood's defense of Polanski...

Btw, why do you keep referring to his tweets as "jokes"? Do you find them funny? Or are you just repeating what he said in his defence. You've never heard of someone excusing their bluntness with allusion to humour..."I was only joking!" when in reality all they are doing is avoiding conflict for being caught saying something inappropriate?

Sincere and shameful would be the right response for putting those vile comments online for others to read, not deflecting to avoid responsibility.

Your opinion of whether a joke is funny is irrelevant. I do not appreciate anti-Semitic jokes, but they are jokes, you cannot deny they are meant to be humorous even if you think those jokes are not funny.

    Case and point:

If you're comparing James Gunn to Roman Polanski, you're simply being libelous because one person actually raped someone, the other didn't. And it still comes back to the irony that the person that started the campaign to have him fired is a rapist, so there's that. The other bit of irony is that there is currently an online petition to have Gunn re-hired (the petition itself acknowledges it will likely not do anything); less effort got him fired, but more than that won't get him re-hired.

Regardless, word is that /pol/ is now looking to "pedo-hunt" a handful of other celebrities who are alleged to have made similar jokes over the years, so stay tuned.

Seems like an odd double standard....

Should someone be held responsible for their statements in a public forum or not?

How much time has to pass between someone doing/saying something offensive and now for them to no longer be held responsible for it?

I hate that people keep calling him a pedophile. Its insulting to victims of real pedophilia like my mother whos dad was a actual pedophile. One of his comments was "The hotel shower was so weak. It was like a little kid peeing on my head.". I really don't see that is pedophilia. Just a really cringy use of words. Now some of his tweets were a bit more weird like a monkey "self-pleasuring" itsself on a little kids body. While thats REALLY disgusting and offensive, it still does not equal pedophile. Just equals man with gross twisted sense of humor.

BUT.... again these tweets were made almost a decade ago. He apologized for them years ago. And he since then has changed his humor style for this many years. Heck even some comedians say alot of "funny" people try dark humor to be edgy, but most realize dark humor is wrong and they stray away from it after.

And I still point out the fact the group that pointed out the tweets was a far right wing group who admits they don't care about ANYTHING. They just brought up the tweets to cause trouble because its funny to them. That and they were mad about Rosanne. James wouldn't have been fired if not for that Fox deal they have going on. It was more important for them to fire James to make sure nothing stood in the way of the deal. EVen despite the fact James apologized for all this years ago. In other words Disney saving face. Which might I add is ironic since Disney has a history of being into pedophilia anyways. Look up the true story of what the Pinocchio movie was really about. It was about old men in hollywood promising little boys amazing things in return for pervy pleasures.

Should they be made responsible for their statements. Yes, of course. In this case he was held responsible years ago and apologized back then. Its why many are confused as to why its being brought up again when we went through this years ago with him.

As for how much time..... I'd say around 10 years is plenty. We humans are always changing and growing. 10 years is a decade of change.

    I agree completely....

But I also think Roseanne's Planet of The Apes comment was more about her looks than anything deliberately racial.

Uh huh....and Louis CK's sexual harassment was years ago....which he promptly admitted to and apologized for.

Didn't stop his career from being ruined.

I don't see why motivation matters....

Should we only condemn inappropriate behavior for when those bringing it to light do so for altruistic reasons? There was a lot of the MeToo movement which was brought to light without any attempts at justice or recompense for the victims. For many, it was about nothing more than bringing inappropriate behavior to light.

I would imagine it's because now he has real consequences for it. What exactly did he lose when it was brought to light years ago?

So Kevin Spacey shouldn't have lost his career due to the allegations he faced from behavior more than 10 years ago?
