There are many parts to banking and lending is only one. A more lucrative part is management and consulting. The Mortgage may be a loss leader with the actual profit being in the management and consulting fees. You see this very commonly among accounting firms that take a loss on the audits but a giant profit in other services.

And no, Donald has not paid off his debts. They were often forgiven in pursuit of greater gains elsewhere.

You're forgetting something. James didn't just walk into court, declare Trump guilty and that was it. She did what prosecutors do: she compiled evidence. And she showed that evidence to the judge and the jury, and they evaluated it. They also listened to Trump's legal team mount Trump's defense.

After all that, they decided the evidence was enough to show Trump's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, and that's the verdict they rendered.

That's how criminal trials work.
