Trump has transformed the Republican Party into the TWERP's, The Trump, W(you fill in), Evangelical, Republican Party.
This is a legitimate party, every bit as much as the other populist parties in the world. It is much more transparent than most. 18 states and over 100 Congressmen favored abolishing the election. Literally thousands of crooks were put in positions of power. Trump has collected over $200M since the election for his personal leadership PAC. He controls the former Republican Party. Few can win without his base.
==========
THE WORST EVER?
Hardly! I remember 1969. History shows us much worse times.

WHERE WE ARE
Presuming that the Republicans hold one seat in the Senate, very little legislation will be passed. This will be up to McConnell. He has a real choice. He can blackmail into deal that favor his personal agenda and that of the few in the Senate who might follow his lead. Or, he can simply follow Trump's orders for 4 more years. This is McConnell's last hurrah. He has an opportunity. At very least, several bills will be passed every year to keep the government running and to increase the debt limit. he can get his pound of flesh then.
============
THE NEXT FOUR YEARS
Much can and will be done by Biden without the Congress. Obama and Trump have been models for increases in presidential power. If McConnel chooses, all the cabinet members will be Acting, as many were under Trump. No judges will be approved.
==============
MOST IMPORTANT
The republic has survived. Many Republican state governors and other leaders have rejected Trump's attempting to sabotage the results. Republican appointed judges has uniformly chose the rule of law and the Constitution over Trumpism. The Supreme Court and the appellate courts have laughed at Trump's law suits.
============
The next 3 decades are likely to be a move back to more control by the states, many of which are as large as many countries. A Conservative Party could win nationally, but that can't happen for at least a decade, so thorough has been the scourge of Trumpism.
And in the end, I am OK with power coming back to the states, AS LONG AS, the federal government protects the rights of the people, especially voting rights. In the end, if the people of Idaho refuse to pay for many services for the poor, that is their choice. But, I am greatly impressed with the robustness of the system, especially the example in Georgia, where specialists in voter suppression decided that Trumpism was just to much to accept. The Republican state government stood firm against Trump.
