Many yrs ago we went to the DC zoo with my 2 or 3 yr old daughter.
So we stayed at a local Dc area hotel and at the pool, my daughter got excited when she saw a black man. Ran up to him and pointing a finger, gleefully said look at the monkey! its a monkey!

We apologized to him, said we had been to the zoo and she had not seen many black people, especially ones only in a bathing suit. He actually did not get upset al all and pretended to be a gorilla with her.

But I can imagine today in the wrong situation with the wrong type of people, something different could have happened.

I went a mostly all white middle school and high school . It was sorta understood that if they used the n word they’d get a beat down even from people who would not normally fight . That was 50 years ago. None of them did it ( thank God). But I don’t see that that “rule” has changed . I see some ignorant people still think it’s ok to verbally abuse others. Thank you Trump, for your profound lack of either discretion or leadership in this issue . even Bush jr told people to leave law abiding Muslims alone

Unfortunately, a large portion of our culture thinks that only whites can be racist. By definition, they believe, minorities cannot be racist. This serves as a cover for evil, and incidents like this, and they are too numerous to count, are what we get. This is what happens when virtue is reckoned on external, even statistical parameters, as a function of group identity rather than individual character. Racism is alive and well, and oftentimes is committed by the very ones decrying it most loudly.
