  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Per capita rates don't matter. China is still responsible for a staggering 40% of emissions. The air quality in many areas of China proves this. You cannot significantly tackle climate change if China isn't on board.
Air quality in cities does not probe that at all.

"Per capita doesn't matter" ?

Maybe rethink that

Per capita doesn't matter. If the country is putting out 40% of global emissions they are responsible for 40% of global emissions. Doesn't matter if it's 20 people or a billion.

And you cannot see how that makes no sense

Per capita rates don't matter.
Scientifically speaking - of course - the entire accumulative amount amounts.

But you asked a political objection about China getting 'off the hook.' Which raises questions of ethical and moral nature - where per capita rates DO matter when trying to evaluate how responsible each nation is for things. So if you could make up your mind what you're talking about, that would be great!

So now we're in the realm of accepting the science, and discussing what to do about it and who is responsible to do what.
Good to have you on board! ;)

Some resort to the IGNORE button when they realize they're getting more Scripture or doctrine than science.
Some should realise what forum they are in and, you know, try to practice some manners.

Well, if a usofan puts out twice the carbon as a Han, then the usofan should look to his/her behavior before trying to solve the world's problems on the backs of the poor.
Funny since most of those trumpeting Climate Change alarmist are usually the ones who leave the biggest carbon footprints.

Again with the whining about perceived political sleights and trying to insinuate it's all someone else's fault!

What CO2 does is old science. It’s something you look up in a text book, like the boiling point of water at sea-level. Good luck to any conspiracy theories trying to lie about what CO2 does. Watch this next test. Variations of it can be replicated in any physics lab on the planet!

Do a little maths - and the CO2 is trapping 4 Hiroshima bombs worth of heat every second - but spread out across the entire planet. The basic physics of how CO2 traps heat is known.

Worries over sudden ocean warming spike

The world's oceans have suddenly spiked much hotter and well above record levels in the last few weeks, with scientists trying to figure out what it means and whether it forecasts a surge in atmospheric warming.
Some researchers think the jump in sea surface temperatures stems from a brewing and possibly strong natural El Nino warming weather condition plus a rebound from three years of a cooling La Nina, all on top of steady global warming that is heating deeper water below. If that's the case, they said, record-breaking ocean temperatures this month could be the first in many heat records to shatter.
From early March to this week, the global average ocean sea surface temperature jumped nearly two-tenths of a degree Celsius (0.36 degree Fahrenheit), according to the University of Maine's Climate Reanalyzer, which climate scientists use and trust. That may sound small, but for the average of the world's oceans — which is 71% of Earth's area —to rise so much in that short a time, “that's huge,” said University of Colorado climate scientist Kris Karnauskas. “That's an incredible departure from what was already a warm state to begin with.”
Climate scientists have been talking about the warming on social media and amongst themselves. Some, like University of Pennsylvania's Michael Mann, quickly dismiss concerns by saying it is merely a growing El Nino on top of a steady human-caused warming increase....
“La Nina's temporary grip on rising global temperatures has been released,” NOAA oceanographer Mike McPhaden said in an email. “One result is that March 2023 was the second highest March on record for global mean surface temperatures."
If El Nino makes its heavily forecasted appearance later this year “what we are seeing now is just a prelude to more records that are in the pipeline,” McPhaden wrote.
Karnauskas said what's likely to happen will be an “acceleration” of warming after the heat has been hidden for a few years.
La Nina brought a cold patch, El Nino simply brings the reverse & it has been doing so since the oceans were in their present contortion. However, other things are the same--the ocean's photic zone depth has not changed. A topic we handle in geology is that the bottom water of any ocean is always quite cold-just above the freezing point of saltwater. Dotted along the ocean floor in many places are the presence of geological chimney stacks known as black or white chimneys. These are reef like structures that are cultivated by chemisynthetic organism. The stack arises from sulfur & magmatic fluids seeping upward in the ocean crust so the immediate region around the stack is expected to be quite warm for that depth.

And your proposed solution is what? Carbon taxes? Carbon taxes that grind the faces of the poor and working class people? The real culprits behind climate change will never be addressed because that would require corporations to stop selling product, people to stop driving automobiles, people to stop eating meat completely, volcanoes to stop exploding, etc. Not going to happen.

Nice deflection. It's sure as heck not my fault, that's for sure.

Did you watch the 90 second video?
Do you know how many times I have addressed the "Gonna send us back to the stone age!" myth in this forum? Another denier ran this myth just a few weeks ago in the last thread on the oceans. If you're going to sing from the denialist hymn sheet - try at least to pick an original song - this one's getting really tired.

Sure thing.

That moment when the alt-troof American Christian tries to comfort the poorer nations that will be suffering even worse as a result of their indifference.

James 2
14 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? 15 Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

The average person has no noticeable impact on climate change. It's people flying in private jets, sending products on tanker ships, factory farms ect. That is what is causing anthropomorphic climate change. Not the average person. Prove me wrong.

Billions of us and our modern lifestyles do - so our accumulated concern and campaigning and voting about it are required to fix it. Fortunately, 95% of our modern tech can be electrified to run on clean power from nuclear and renewables. The last bit are the airlines, but they're working on electric planes for short haul and hydrogen for long haul. In the meantime if we decarbonise everything else we'll be well on the way. There will also be less deaths due to particulate pollution.

The real cost of coal and fossil fuels? Double what you pay in your electricity bill or at the pump. Because that's what you're paying AGAIN in your taxes or health insurance premiums.
