  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Scott Wagner blames body heat, earth moving closer to sun for global warming

Wagner, R-Spring Garden Township, had told his audience, "I haven't been in a science class in a long time, but the Earth moves closer to the sun every year -- you know, the rotation of the Earth. We're moving closer to the sun."

He also said, "We have more people ... you know, humans have warm bodies. So is heat coming off? Things are changing ... but I think we are, as a society, doing the best we can."

Wagner is a Pennsylvania state senator and the republican candidate for governor.

The Earth is not spiraling toward the Sun. In fact, it's moving away by a tiny 5 inches or so every year. And human body heat has absolutely no effect on global temperatures.
Wow. Maybe he has something here. Perhaps when NASA tells us that the Universe is still expanding and we are moving incrementally away from the sun, they are just simply lying in an effort to support the leftist commie pinko agenda of Climate Change warnings. It makes sense, if the sun seems hotter, then we must be getting closer (assuming the sun isn't getting hotter). I'm not quite sure what the rotation of the Earth has to do with any of this but it must be a factor if Mr. Wagner says it does. After all he should know what he's talking about as he spent one semester at Williamsport Area Community College before dropping out. That makes him an expert don't you think?

As for body heat, there are more people giving off more heat (some more than others) each year. What is his solution to this issue. Should we begin mass killings of people to lower the Earth's temperature? Who should we start with? Might I suggest a government survey to find the hottest individuals and start there?

This is true. He's just a quack.
So, Patrick Moore is just a quack? And Scott Wagner is an expert in Climate Change? Patrick Moore has a PhD in Forest Biology while Scott Wagner attended one semester of community college before dropping out. Who should people believe when it comes to climate change, a PhD or a Community College dropout?

False Dilemma fallacy right there. It's not as though they are the only choices, it's not as though there isn't more information out there.

False Dilemma fallacy right there. It's not as though they are the only choices, it's not as though there isn't more information out there.
I never said they were the only choices for anything. There's always many choices or voices on subjects such as this. I was just comparing the two that were presented by the original poster and the poster to whom I replied. There's many volumes of information out there and I have researched and studied much of it on both sides. I don't believe in making a decision on any matter without researching all sides of the issue. Did you have any particular information you would like to discuss or are you simply trying to stir dissension? A false dilemma fallacy presents two options as if they are the only possibilities, when other options indeed exist. In this case, I made no such statement but simply compared the two options that were being discussed by previous posters. I made no illusions to the exclusion of other options but since you bring it up, on this issue there are hundreds if not thousands of experts.

For instance, there's Waleed Abdalati, former Chief Climate Scientist at NASA, who has written extensively on the subject. Then there's Myles Allen, head of the Climate Dynamics group at University of Oxford's Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics Department and lead author of the IPCC Third Assessment Report. Not to mention Robin Bell, polar geophysicist and President of the American Geophysical Union, Richard Betts, Head of the Climate Impacts strategic area at the British Met Office Hadley Center, Jason Box, professor of glaciology at Ohio State University, Andrew Dessler, atmospheric scientist and professor at Texas A&M University, Robert Dickinson, climatologist, professor at the University of Texas, Tasmin Edwards, professor of Climate Science, Kings College, London, Christopher Field, climate scientist with the Carnegie Institution for Science, David Hodell, paleoclimatologist and professor at Cambridge University, David Caroly, professor of meteorology at the University of Melbourne in Australia and Michael Mann, professor of meteorology and director, Earth System Science Center, Penn State University. I would use the same comparison between any of these people and Scott Wagner, just so as not to make this about a binary choice. Any more questions? Do you have any names to add to the list?

Third option. Moore is a climate skeptic. Wagner is a climate skeptic. They're both quacks.
Yes, Mr. Moore is a skeptic. I was simply pointing out that he is a much more qualified (and less outrageous) one than Mr. Wagner. I don't know all there is to know about climate change and don't pretend to. All I know is that Christ never told us to worry about it so I just take shots at those who do. I believe it's real and I also believe it's a little too late to do much to slow it. I believe we should do what we can and otherwise let God decide how it all plays out. My best suggestion is as Christians, we should concentrate on what Christ did teach and that is doing God's work by helping those less fortunate than ourselves and sharing the gospel with everyone regardless of what they think of Climate Change or any other political or environmental issue for that matter.

This article shows that it's just not China and India which got greener, but the US and rest of the globe as well. See the picture in
the article.

From the article; (Bold is my emphasis)

"One explanation is air pollution. Carbon dioxide is not only a pollutant but a fertilizer — a key ingredient in photosynthesis that helps plants grow. Some farmers inject CO2 into their greenhouses to accelerate plant growth. But now we’re fertilizing plants on a global scale: In the last two centuries, NASA reports, humans have increased the CO2 content in the air by roughly 50 percent. All that extra CO2 is accelerating leaf growth, and satellites can see it.

These trends are especially prominent in China and India. Together, these two countries account for roughly one-third of all greening, the study found."

China and India's planting accounted for 1/3rd of the earth's increase greening, but overall, 5% of the earth is greener, which is a lot
with relation to the size of the earth and the useable farm land,
