“Women have served in and alongside the Armed Forces since our nation’s founding,” the lawmakers wrote. “While American men are required to register for the military draft and fight if needed, these requirements have never been applied to American women. Where they have fought, they have done so freely.”

“This approach has served our nation well, and it retains broad bipartisan support,” they said.

Mr. Hawley, Missouri Republican, was joined in the letter by Sens. Tom Cotton and John Boozman of Arkansas, Marco Rubio of Florida, James Lankford of Oklahoma, Roger Marshall of Kansas, Cindy Hyde-Smith and Roger F. Wicker of Mississippi, Steve Daines of Montana, Mike Lee of Utah, Ted Cruz of Texas and James E. Risch of Idaho.

If a woman can shoot someone or drive a tank or fly a plane why not?
If they lost it they'd lose the come back:
"Oh yeah? IF you Feminists want equality so bad, why don't you want to be drafted? Huh?"

Correct me if I'm wrong, but being drafted doesn't necessarily mean that you fight on the front line.

If someone weighs 8 stone soaking wet and is scared of his own shadow and someone else is a mean mother of an Amazonian who could break you in two, then who do you want alongside you if things are going badly? And who do you want answering the phones back at HQ?

No-one should be forced to go to war.

However, why shouldn't the draft apply to all able bodied citizens willing to go into military roles, both combat and non-combat? The Senate has already voted once (85 to 13, I might add) to expand the draft to women - https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...ft-for-women-as-conservatives-try-to-undo-it/

I don't agree with the stance that women can do every military role as well as men - in field experience from several nations in Afghanistan and Iraq suggests that the general ground infantry role is probably best left to men. This is mostly based around physiological issues related to the weight of the general issue combat load. As it's proportionally higher for women, they ended up with greater rates of in-country march related injuries (mostly ankles and lower back) and long term joint damage (particularly hips/pelvis and knees) and skeletal/bone density issues.

However, I'd suggest that women can serve in the vast majority of military roles just as well as male counterparts, including most combat roles (even front line trigger puller roles, such as special forces). Several studies - US and other countries - even suggest that unit cohesion and problem solving improve with the inclusion of female soldiers.

The National Commission on Military, National, and Public Service concluded roughly the same in 2020. They recommended that women be made eligible for the draft, the same as men.

This is nothing new - to my knowledge the US first looked at drafting women in non-combat roles in the 1930s (maybe even earlier). During WW2, a majority of the public supported drafting unmarried women over married men.

Back in my early 20s I had a girlfriend who met this description. She was an amateur weight lifter. (this was in my experimental relationship phase).

Apart from the interesting musculature, I recall she was as bright as a broomstick. Given the choice I would have preferred a female version of the 8 stone weakling who at least understood which end of the gun was up.

Historically, women have the freedom to choose to fight but men don't.

What's up with that conscription thingy in Israel? If they can do it, our women can too.

Nothing to see here but conservatives trying to be as regressive as they can be.

In other words; you can't defend your assertion.
If you don't know the difference, I cannot help you. My brother spent four years in the Marines, yet he never went to war. My father spent four years in the navy, yet he never went to war.

The draft is implemented when there is a war.

Were your relatives drafted; or did they serve voluntarily?

You really know so little of the draft, don't you?

Here is something to learn.
Remembering Conscription in the United States – Marquette University Law School Faculty Blog
For American males who turned 18 between 1946 and 1972 (several of whom currently serve on the Marquette law faculty) the German action is a reminder of the powerful role that the “peace-time” military draft once played in the United States.
