  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What he did was illegal, plain and simple.

Do you deny that his actions were illegal?
What he did appears to have been a mistake not entirely of his own making. On the other hand, what Bergdahl did seems to have been entirely of his own making

Because I don't know that it was illegal.

Guns are Illegal in Mexico | U.S. Consulate General Tijuana, Mexico

Don’t bring firearms or ammunition across the border into Mexico.

Don’t carry a knife, even a small pocketknife, on your person in Mexico.

You may become one of dozens of U.S. Citizens who are arrested each month for unintentionally violating Mexico’s strict weapons laws.
If you are caught with firearms or ammunition in Mexico...

  • You will go to jail and your vehicle will be seized;
  • You will be separated from your family, friends, and your job, and likely suffer substantial financial hardship;
  • You will pay court costs and other fees ranging into the tens of thousands of dollars defending yourself;
  • You may get up to a 30-year sentence in a Mexican prison if found guilty.
Now that you've been educated on the subject, will you call what Tahmooressi did illegal?

He ended up in Mexico because the signage misled him. He attempted to return to the US rather than enter Mexico and he notified authorities of his intent and the weapons. So no, I cannot say what he did was illegal.

The double standards you produce are stunning.

You have no problem calling any Mexican who crosses the border into America as being illegal.

Sorry, but you're making that up. I've never said nor suggested any such thing.

But when will you address the Bergdahl situation?
I guess it's safe to say never (speaking of double standards)

Sorry, but you're making that up. I've never said nor suggested any such thing.

Not only have you said it, you've probably said it dozens of times. I have posted two of the times you've accused border crossers of being illegal simply for crossing the border.

The double standard is now documented for all to see.

If you're driving illegally, you're an illegal driver. If you're in this country illegally, you're an illegal alien. In the case at hand, the illegal alien is dangerous and should be deported to Peru ASAP

Nice strwman. the suggestion was to use the military to enforce the border, not to root out illegal aliens already here. :wave:

Those posts don't support your false assertion. Please do not tell lies about me.

You call people who cross the border without legal immigration credentials as being illegal, even though they have never had their day in court, yet here you tell us that you cannot claim illegal against the captive SGT until he has had his day in court.

A blatant double standard if there ever was one.

You claimed that Tahmooressi was very likely not committing a crime, yet Mexican authorities claim he did.

Here is your quote:

Except you got it backwards. Bergdahl was very likely committing a crime whereas Tahmooressi was not

This is what I am discussing with you, because you are the one who made the claim. I am under no obligation to change this discussion to something else simply because you continue to ask me to discuss something else.

Why do you call people who cross the border into America as ILLEGAL before they've had their day in court? There is your double standard.

If a Mexican drove to a border crossing and told the guards he took a wrong turn and did not want to enter the US, I would fully support allowing him to make a U-turn and return to Mexico. So no double standard exists. Sorry to burst that bubble :wave:

How about if the Mexican had a small arsenal?

He'd be arrested and you'd blame Obama.

If a Mexican drove to a border crossing

He drove through a border crossing with an arsenal of weapons....which is illegal.

You call undocumented border crossers illegal without giving them the benefit of a trial.

Yes, a double standard it will remain.

I find it interesting that you know his intent. You must have exceptional mind reading skills.
