  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Pope Francis says he has experienced ‘Christian joy’ amid ongoing illness, recovery

Pope Francis shared on Monday that he has experienced the gift of Christian joy during the challenges of his current illness, as the Vatican says the pope’s condition has continued to improve after his monthlong stay in the hospital.

In a message to an Italian synodal assembly March 31, the pontiff said joy “is God’s gift — let us always remember it; it is not an easy joy, it does not come from convenient solutions to problems, it does not avoid the cross, but it springs from the certainty that the Lord never leaves us alone.”

“I have experienced this myself in hospitalization, and now in this time of convalescence,” he added. “Christian joy is reliance on God in every situation in life.”

In an April 1 update about the 88-year-old pontiff’s continued recovery from double pneumonia and other lung infections, the Holy See Press Office said Pope Francis’ lung infection, mobility, and voice continue to improve, with the pontiff concelebrating daily Mass every morning and working from his desk.

Catholic university in Oregon offers students 'queer theologies' in place of 'biblical texts'

'Faithful Catholics have been dispossessed of their own institutions'

A private Roman Catholic university in Oregon is reorganizing its theology department next fall, enabling students to substitute a mandatory upper-level biblical texts course with classes that explore subjects such as "queer theologies."

The University of Portland, which was founded in 1901 and is affiliated with the Congregation of Holy Cross, is expanding its department of theology to include "religious studies," allowing students the "autonomy" to align their studies with their faith traditions, according to The College Fix.

The Beacon, the university's student newspaper, explained earlier this year that theology students must still take a 100-level theology course — or THE 105— that includes biblical text study as a core requirement.

A letter to JD Vance about alleged Israeli atrocities, censorship at American colleges

Dear Vice President JD Vance,

"America First" is a good guideline for our government, but it is not enough by itself - God requires that we also be just to our neighbor nations, and even that we love our enemies.

I have read with some distress that Israel is accused of various atrocities in Gaza, including the execution-style murder of 15 Red Crescent paramedics and civil defense workers <Israel killed 15 Palestinian paramedics and rescue workers one by one, says UN>, and the forcing of innocent Palestinians into buildings in Gaza to check for militants and booby traps <In Gaza, almost every IDF platoon keeps a human shield, a sub-army of Palestinian slaves | Opinion>,<Redirect Notice>.

These are not acceptable practices, even as means to the end of pressuring Hamas to release American hostages. As a Catholic, I am taught that good ends cannot justify evil means, such as willful harm to innocent people.

This problem may be compounded by the crackdown on non-citizen student protesters in the United States, sometimes described in the media as "Pro-Hamas". If such a person calls for the killing of Jews, fine, give him or her the boot. If they physically intimidate Jewish students, again, give them the boot. But I fear that this crackdown will reach students who rightfully, and merely, protest Israeli violence against innocents. Please ensure that this doesn't happen, and that the Administration publicly states that it won't happen - otherwise, there may be a chilling effect - not only on students themselves, but on university administrators, who may repress morally good speech out of fear that their universities will lose federal funding if they don't.

Yours in Christ,
Ben S.

Labor Department secures eye-popping sum to return to American taxpayers

U.S. Department of Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer announced on Monday that her department will return over $1 billion in unused COVID-era funding back to the taxpayer amid the Trump administration's push for the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to slash waste, fraud and abuse in the federal government.

In a press release, the Labor Department said $1.4 billion of unspent COVID funding will be "returned to taxpayers through the U.S. Department of Treasury’s General Fund" and added that "action" is "being taken to recover the remaining $2.9 billion."

"The roughly $4.3 billion was intended for states to use for temporary unemployment insurance during the pandemic," the press release states. "Instead, several states continued spending millions of dollars despite no longer meeting necessary requirements, which was uncovered in a 2023 audit conducted by the department’s Office of Inspector General."

Make Known to Me the Path of Life

“I will bless the Lord who has counseled me;
Indeed, my mind instructs me in the night.
I have set the Lord continually before me;
Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
Therefore my heart is glad and my glory rejoices;
My flesh also will dwell securely.
For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol;
Nor will You allow Your Holy One to undergo decay.
You will make known to me the path of life;
In Your presence is fullness of joy;
In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.” (Psalms 16:7-11 NASB’95)

This was a Psalm of David, who was a man of God. Did David ever fail? Yes, he did. But he repented of his sin, and he went right back to following the Lord in obedience to his commands. Was he then perfect in every way? No. But he was a man of God who served the Lord, who followed in the ways of the Lord, and who took seriously the commands of God. He didn’t live for the sinful pleasures of the flesh, but for God who truly was his Lord.

So, this Psalm is coming from the lips of a man of God who served the Lord with his life, who followed in the ways of the Lord, and who heard the Lord speaking to him, and who listened to the voice of the Lord, even if it was in the middle of the night. So, how did he hear God speak? Through His Spirit, I would presume, in his inner being. And how do we hear God speak? Same way as he spoke to David, and also through the written word of God.

But the voice we hear speaking to us in our inner being must not contradict with the Scriptures, and it must not contradict with the character of God, and who he is, and what he is about, and with his design and purpose for our lives. So, we must test the spirits and our inner voices to see if they are of God or not before we accept them as the words of God. For God is not going to lead us to anything that is sinful or that is against his will.

But we must also guard against quenching the Spirit’s voice out of fear of hearing the voice of God in our spirits leading us in the way in which the Lord would have us go. Does the Bible teach us the ways of the Lord? Absolutely! And we need to be students of the Scriptures who obey the word of the Lord intended for us under the New Covenant. But we need to know God’s specific leadings in who to speak to and when and where, too.

And we need to be able to hear the Lord speaking to us in calling us to specific areas of ministry which he has designed for us individually to do so that we know where he has gifted us and what our body part assignments are from God within the universal body of Christ. For we will not all have the same gifts and the same body part assignments. And these are to come from God and not from our own fleshly desires and choices.

So, we need to let the Holy Spirit, living within us who follow Jesus with our lives, to counsel us, even in the middle of the night, in what he wants us to do, and where he wants us to go, and regarding what ministries he has for us, and to whom he wants us to minister, and in what ways. For he may wake us up in the night to pray for someone or to write to someone or to write a poem or a song or a devotion or whatever he desires for us to do.

And when we follow the Lord in walks of obedience to his commands, and in a love response to his callings upon our individual lives, and we become the people of God who he wants us to be, doing what he planned for us to do even before he formed us in the wombs of our mothers, and so sin is no longer what we practice, we will be opposed, even by others who call themselves Christians. But we are not to let this unsettle us (shake us).

But please know that faith in Jesus Christ, which is biblical faith, will lead us to deny self, put sin to death in our lives daily, by the Spirit, and follow our Lord in walks of obedience to his commands, and in surrender to his will and purpose for our lives. We will be those who not only obey the written word of God but who follow the leading of the Holy Spirit in our lives in ministering to the body of Christ in our God gifted and given body part assignments.

Lead Me Gently Home, Father

By Will L. Thompson, 1879

Lead me gently home, Father,
Lead me gently home;
When life’s toils are ended,
And parting days have come,
Sin no more shall tempt me,
Ne’er from Thee I’ll roam,
If Thou’ll only lead me, Father,
Lead me gently home.

Lead me gently home, Father,
Lead me gently home, Father,
Lest I fall upon the wayside,
Lead me gently home.

Lead me gently home, Father,
Lead me gently home;
In life’s darkest hours, Father,
When life’s troubles come,
Keep my feet from wand’ring,
Lest from Thee I roam,
Lest I fall upon the wayside,
Lead me gently home.

Civil War Between Liberal Catholics?

Article on the conservative faction: The Unexpected Conservative Cardinal-Electors – Catholic Family News

Editor’s Note: The terms used here of “conservative”, “liberal” and “moderate” are all relative to the post-Conciliar Church. Indeed, many of these cardinals, even those deemed conservative, would have been considered liberal by pre-conciliar standards. There is, however, a significant difference between the most liberal of the cardinals and the most conservative of them, which demands that there are different terms to differentiate them. For more on this, see the interview with Mr. Verweij on our YouTube channel.

While the firmly orthodox cardinal faction currently holds around 50 electors, the liberal faction is actually smaller. This might be surprising considering how many cardinals Pope Francis has appointed, but the fact that he made no German cardinal other than Müller, helps to explain this fact. However, the liberal faction suffers from another problem: clear infighting and disagreement between moderate and radical liberals.

This division was noted by the Pillar a few years back. Some of the key points of contention are the stance taken with regards to the heretical German Synodal Way, whether doctrine as opposed to some pastoral practices can be decentralized along the lines of Anglicanism, and last but not least the position with regard to homosexuality.

Mario Grech, the general secretary for the synod of bishops in Rome, is the clear radical liberal candidate, and openly so. He has outright spoken of supporting a ‘rainbow church’ where the German bishops departing from the faith can co-exist alongside orthodoxy. He has been very pro-LGBT, in favor of loosening priestly celibacy, and has criticized the bishops and cardinals who wrote the dubia regarding the German Synodal Way.

"The joys of getting old mean you go deaf. I also now have got the joy of going blind," he revealed mid-set, per Sky News.

Tesla owner sues man who allegedly vandalized his vehicle in parking lot for $1 million

A Dallas man whose Tesla Model X was vandalized in the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport parking lot is suing the vandal for more than $1 million.

The suspect, Rafael Hernandez, was arrested March 22 on a criminal mischief charge by the Tarrant County District Attorney's Office after he was recorded by the Tesla’s built-in cameras striking the left side of the electric-powered vehicle.

The victim, who is choosing to remain anonymous, was traveling when his Tesla was damaged in the airport parking lot. In the footage obtained by Fox, Hernandez can be seen pulling an object out of his pocket and forcing it into the side of the Model X.

The Tesla owner told Fox News Digital in an exclusive interview that the "motives were wrong, and [Hernandez’s] acts were intentional — it is for a judge and jury to decide, based on the facts, what his punishment should be. I believe strongly that I was targeted because my car is a Tesla. I didn’t even realize that this nationwide Tesla attack was even a thing — until I was thrown into that world. What’s important to me is that it happened, it was intentional, and it was wrong. As a result, I’ve been thrown into a nightmare, and I don’t want this to happen to anyone else."

Republicans scramble to shield their states from Trump’s next wave of tariffs

"Swaths of Republicans on Capitol Hill are scrambling to shield their states from Donald Trump’s next wave of tariffs, a sign of the private alarm in the president’s party about the impacts of his trade agenda.
Trump has promised his rollout of global tariffs on April 2 will amount to a “Liberation Day” for the American economy. But dozens of GOP lawmakers worry privately that another round of tariffs will raise prices on U.S. consumers, cripple American farmers and rattle the stock market.
In anticipation, they are coordinating with various industry groups to push the administration for exemptions that protect key local industries from that kind of pain. They’re also trying to effectively void some of the tariffs on key products once they go into effect, lining up to push Trump officials for so-called exclusions.
Their quiet maneuvering signals the heightened anxiety among Republicans about the next phase of his trade wars — and the political pitfalls ahead for the president and his party. Four Republicans with direct knowledge of the strategy, granted anonymity to discuss the private conversations, described the behind-the-scenes planning as concerted and targeted.
Fueling their anxiety: GOP lawmakers don’t yet know the full scope of what Trump has dubbed “reciprocal tariffs” and possibly other duties the White House is preparing to unveil Wednesday. The president and top aides have said they will calculate different tariff rates for the country’s major trading partners, based on the barriers other countries put on U.S. imports. But they have yet to detail any figures or say which countries will be hit — and even many White House aides remain in the dark" --POLITICO
Take a public stand against the tariffs, heck no, "be ‘vewy, vewy quiet’."
