  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Gavin Newsom's X feed is awesome

It could end up increasing the unpopularity of the Democrat party.
<Blink>

I don't see how. It's not like they are doing well in public opinion up to this point. It's not like the people who like Trump's style are going to change their opinion so lampooning it does not strike me as overly problematic from a risk / reward perspective. I guess we will see.

Moore's Refutation of Skepticism

Famously, G.E. Moore held up his hand in front of the class and declared, "Here is a hand." And, by that declaration, Moore refuted epistemic skepticism.

What was he refuting?
  • If S knows that q (she has a hand), then S knows that not-sk (skepticism is false).
  • S doesn't know that not-sk.
  • Therefore, S doesn't know that q (she has a hand). - modus tollens
What was Moore declaring?
  • If S knows that q (she has a hand), then S knows that not-sk (skepticism is false).
  • S knows that q.
  • Therefore, S knows that not-sk (skepticism is false). - modus ponens
Does that argument work? Can I just raise my hand, and wave away all the brain-in-a-vat, Cartesian-daemon possibilities?

If you know you have a hand in the way we typically mean it, that means you have not chosen to accept skepticism about your hand.

Thats all I get from it. Nothing about skepticism being false. Just personal position re skepticism - which you may have adopted by mere unthinking custom.

Why Are You in Despair?

“Why are you in despair, O my soul?
And why have you become disturbed within me?
Hope in God, for I shall again praise Him
For the help of His presence.
O my God, my soul is in despair within me;
Therefore I remember You from the land of the Jordan
And the peaks of Hermon, from Mount Mizar.
Deep calls to deep at the sound of Your waterfalls;
All Your breakers and Your waves have rolled over me.
The Lord will command His lovingkindness in the daytime;
And His song will be with me in the night,
A prayer to the God of my life.” (Psalm 42:5-8 NASB1995)

We who are followers of Jesus Christ, who have died with Christ to sin, and who’ve been walking in obedience to his commands, we are still human beings living in flesh bodies, and so we are subject to human emotions when we go through any kind of difficult circumstances. And so sometimes we have to counsel ourselves to have a right response. I know that I do this. I talk to myself, and I reason with myself, and I give myself godly counsel. This is sometimes how I work through my emotions in difficult times.

And that is what the psalmist was doing, too. He was asking himself, his own soul, why he was in despair. And he was counseling himself to hope in God, and to praise God for the help of his presence, regardless of his circumstances. And then he went the next step in making a proclamation of his decision to remember God, and to say with confidence that the Lord would command His lovingkindness and that His song would be with him, a prayer to the God of his life. His hope, his trust, his confidence were in God.

This is the kind of approach that all of us need to take when we face difficult circumstances in our lives, and especially if we begin to feel depressed or despondent, and we don’t know which way to turn. We need to look to God. We need to call on God for our help and for our godly counsel and/or we need to give ourselves the godly counsel that God has already provided. For we must not let our circumstances get the best of us. We must not let them control us and our emotions to the point to where we feel without hope.

I am going through some difficult circumstances right now. Some are more difficult than others. I did share a current one in the video portion of this devotion as a personal example of how we need to respond to our difficult circumstances and of how we need to trust the Lord in all circumstances, and how we need to keep hoping in and trusting in God no matter what may come into our lives. I believe that is the primary message here. We have to trust in the lovingkindness of God and believe that he is sovereign over all.

All Through the Night

Blessed are you when you’re persecuted
Because of your faith in Jesus Christ.
Blessed are you when people insult you,
And falsely say what leads folks to doubt.
Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is
Great in the heavens. You’re not alone.

When you are persecuted in one place,
Flee to another. God will be there.
You will be hated by all the nations
Because you testify of God’s grace.
Many will seize you and persecute you,
And put to death the foll’wers of Christ.

Yet do not fear what humans may do to you,
For I’m with you all through the night.
I tell you, love your enemies with my love,
And forgive as I forgave you.
Pray for those who do evil against you.
Rest in my love and grace from above.

Newsome pushed back against Democracy to achieve his political goals

California voters established an independent redistricting commission in 2010 to prevent gerrymandering. Newsom’s plan would override this process temporarily, using a constitutional amendment and a special election scheduled for November 4.
Unlike Texas, where the Legislature determines congressional lines, California voters in 2010 gave that power to a bipartisan citizen commission. The commission draws a new map once each decade, after the U.S. Census, to ensure each congressional district has roughly an equal number of people. It last did so in 2021.

The Governor want to remove that power from the voters and place it under his authority - a direct move against the Democratic Process.

Newsom is proposing to temporarily override the commission and create districts more favorable to Democrats until after the 2030 Census. That requires going to the voters for their approval.
Sure looks like a direct attack on the Democratic process to make political appointment without voters consent.

A Politico poll found that nearly two-thirds of California voters prefer retaining the state’s independent redistricting commission over returning authority to the Legislature to draw congressional lines.
Hi, California voter here. What is it you believe Newsom is taking away from we CA voters by putting this measure on a ballot for us CA voters to decide?

Illegal Immigration

Despite what some might "think" in their echo chambers...

Criminal Penalties for Improper Entry to the United States

For the first improper entry offense, the person can be fined (as a criminal penalty), or imprisoned for up to six months, or both.

For a subsequent offense, the person can be fined or imprisoned for up to two years, or both. (See 8 U.S.C. Section 1325, I.N.A. Section 275.)

Of course, they're all "criminals." But Rock's point was that many people who answered the polling question are more concerned with those who committed crimes after they got here, which makes the polling question something of a bait and switch.

Sure, I do, too. I said that already, but that question is a bait and switch in it's way, too. Sure, the border is closed as far as you are concerned because asylum seekers and refugees are no longer allowed in, but I think most people who answer the question would assume it also meant closing the border to trafficked illegal workers who are exploited by corporate enterprise.

That looks fairly scientific.
I'm surprised that support for deporting criminals that are in the country illegally isn't higher.

Antisemitism all time high in UK

Why? Why shouldn't it be the other way around?

Because there's no progression the other way around. No progression means stagnation, and stagnation leads to collapse. Collapse leads to famine, poverty and crime.

We should want countries to be successful instead.

Note that those two questions are about very specific components of Trump's overall scheme. For most Americans, when you ask them about the administration's efforts to deport "criminals," they think about efforts to deport people with criminal records, especially violent criminals. I know it's popular for Trump's proponents to reframe that by stating that anyone here illegally is technically a "criminal," but that's not how most people think.

Another look at the moon landing.

So, explain then.

I gave you 3 links which told of NASA engineers/astronauts speaking about their faith, 2 examples of people who shared Scripture/communion on the moon and a couple of people who walked on the moon and then became Christians.
And you reckon that NASA are all about hiding God.

If you don't explain or give any evidence then it doesn't matter if you say "right" or "I'm wealy, wealy telling the truth" - it means nothing.

The End Time Puzzle

„And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman (the constellation „Virgo“) clothed with the Sun, and the Moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars (9 bright stars from the constellation „Leo“ + three planets – Mercury, Venus and Mars).“ (Revelation 12: 1 KJV) „And she brought forth a man child (the planet Jupiter)“ (Revelation 12: 5a KJV)
This celestial configuration occurs extremely rarely and last occurred on:
- September 14, 1056 AD.
- September 5, 1293 AD.
- September 6, 1483 AD.
- September 24, 1827 AD.
- September 23, 2017 AD.
This is how (see the picture) the sky looked (as viewed by an observer, with a special telescope, from the northern hemisphere of the Earth, during the day, when the Sun shines) on September 23, 2017 AD.
This picture in the sky will be repeated again 120 years after the last time, i.e. – on September 23, 2137 AD. - And probably this year and this day indicates the text in question in the book of Revelation?

"How America Took Out the Nord Stream2 Pipeline"

Intelligence officials suspect Ukraine partisans behind Nord Stream bombings

Questions about Ukrainian culpability first surfaced last year when investigators found no evidence to directly tie the attacks to the Russian government [where most fingers were originally pointing].
German news reports on Tuesday raised more questions about potential Ukrainian links to the Nord Stream attack. German authorities reportedly had made a “breakthrough” in their investigation, according to a joint investigation by multiple German media outlets, and had identified a small team of saboteurs using a yacht rented from a company in Poland that was “apparently owned by two Ukrainians.”

Ukrainian held in Italy over Nord Stream gas pipelines blast mystery

German prosecutors say a Ukrainian man has been arrested in Italy on suspicion of blowing up the Nord Stream gas pipelines under the Baltic Sea, several months after the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The man, identified only as Serhii K, was arrested in the province of Rimini and was part of a group who planted explosives under the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines from Russia to Germany, federal prosecutors say.

The Ukrainian, who was detained by Italy's carabinieri military police stationed in the northern coastal resort of Misano Adriatico, is suspected of being one of the masterminds of the operation.

Prosecutors said he was part of a team that had chartered a yacht and sailed from the German port of Rostock to an area of the Baltic near the Danish island of Bornholm.

There is no evidence so far linking Ukraine, Russia or any other state to the attacks.

Historic Poll Devastates Democrats: Worst Voter Approval Rating in 35 Years

Don't forget - I 100% support her running. Alexandria would be the biggest gift the whomever her opponent is that the Republicans could ever hope for. She is good for the Republican Party I support and endorse her campaign running.
That would be a mistake I don't think she will make. The place for AOC is Speaker of the House--a much more powerful position in terms of policy than President.

Democrat Appellate Judge overturns half billion dollar fine

I saw that coming.

It was overturned. It happens all the time in our court system. Someone gets convicted, fined, sentenced and then the case is reexamined and is overturned because it wasn't legitimate.
The guilt was not overturned. Just the extent of the fine

I don't know what you are trying to prove with those numbers. I'm not a Democrat--they're not far enough left for me, but I approve of closing the border. I also approve of prioritizing illegal aliens who have committed crimes while they are here. I only wish that was what Trump was actually doing.

Hi, Just call me Bob. Agnostic up for friendly debate

It might surprise you but I do talk to God.
Not shocked. That is a very good thing. More so glad to hear!

I've never had a reply in the conventional sense
Ehhh, a lot of people have been spoken to by God, they just aren't very aware of it. If you talk to Him, I suspect He talks to you. He speaks to our hearts, and His voice is ever so soft and subtle. Very quiet and extremely kind, understanding and encouraging, and without full attention on Him, we can often assume His voice or guidance is just a thought that entered our mind, when it really originated in our heart where He moves in us.

but going back to my original story I may have been blessed with the most personal reply anyone can ever expect!
That, is a blessing. Sounds like He showed you something you could not ignore to tell you He is talking to you. :)

May be that He has bigger plans for you than anyone can imagine.

All humans are 50th cousins?

I don't think anyone's pointed it out, but my back-of-the-envelope estimate has a major flaw: It presumes a population where none are isolated. Did mention that, but didn't bother to think about what that meant.

Let's say a family in Asia parted company about, oh, let's say 30,000 years ago to pull a number out of the hat, with one brother heading north while another stays behind. They really lose contact with each other's relations about 24,000 years ago when one strikes out across the land bridge. From that point their descendants have no contact until the 20th Century. That's roughly 960 generations, so they would be 959th cousins, far more than 50th. According to one theory, there was a split between European and Asian populations about 45,000 years ago, and had no real contact until Atilla rode into town about 43,000 years later. That's about 1,720 generations, so they'd be about 1,719th cousins. Populations that split over long periods of time would be way over 50th cousins in kinship, something I should have realized but didn't.
There was certainly substantial contact between Asia and Europe between 45,000 years ago and Attila. The most serious attempt to model the most recent common genealogical ancestor was this paper: Modelling the recent common ancestry of all living humans - Nature.
