The bible says that God breaks and he mends, but I don't want to follow a God who would break anything. The term "Even though he slays me" is not a picture I'd like to look at.
If God is truly good then how do we reconcile the harmful actions he's comited?
there are many things in the Bible that are hard to understand, the Word recorded in the biblical scriptures is just a "seed", and in principle there is a need for deep "insight" so that the "seed" may be "cultivated", "grow" and "bear fruits"; one hint: every time when Jehovah caused evil to people, it was actually satan the one that caused that evil, not the true God, satan had just had great power in the "heaven" during the times before the establishment/enactment of the New Covenant, with which he was able to manifest as if he is a part of God, including a part of Jehovah, he was even able to impose many imperfections on the way the law of the old covenant was established/written; people saw one God who is both good and evil, but the truth is that the true God was in constant struggle with the wicked/evil one, as it is intimated by St Jude the Apostle:
Jude 1:9 "when the archangel Michael, contending with the devil,
was disputing about the body of Moses, he did not presume to pronounce a blasphemous judgment(i.e. He did not dare to underestimate the potential of satan), but said, “The Lord rebuke you.”"
satan had unfortunately managed to use the body of Moses in crucial moments in order to impose imperfections on the law, because he pressured Moses through people among the israelites who constantly demanded unrighteous things from him, e.g. someone said to him: "Moses, one man has broken my hand, and now he walks with two healthy hands, while i suffer with my broken hand, i want that man to be punished accordingly, otherwise i won't calm down and won't stop demanding my rights...", another man said: "Moses, i caught my wife having sex with another man, i want that harlot to be killed, either there will be a fair law or i will kill her myself...", another man said: "Moses, i want to divorce my wife, she has turned out to be very nasty woman, she behaves stupidly all the time..." - Moses had constantly been pressured by thousands of people who wanted to pay back evil for evil and to treat their neighbors badly, which was contrary to the holy law of God (which says "don't kill" and don't cause evil to any person for any reason and by any way in principle), so there had been a constant struggle between the true God and the wicked/evil one
Mark 10:2-9 "Some Pharisees came up to Jesus, testing Him, and began to question Him whether it was lawful for a man to divorce a wife. And He answered and said to them, What did Moses command you? They said, Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away. But Jesus said to them, Because of your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment. But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother, and the two shall become one flesh; so they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate."
the true God is still in struggle with the "darkness", though all that power that satan had had in the "heaven" has been taken away, so the true One has been in struggle with the "darkness" since the beginning of the eternity, of course this war cannot last for more than about 5-6 millennia as of the day of the Fall, but now it is still important for the religious worshipers and spiritual servants to be careful not to serve the "darkness"...
Revelation 17:10 "there are seven kings(i.e. seven times): five are fallen(i.e. five millennia may pass as of the day of the Fall), and one is(i.e. and the end may come in the sixth millennium), and the other is not yet come(i.e. and the time for which evil may reign in the sixth millennium has not yet begun); and when he cometh, he must continue a short space(i.e. but its length will be short)."
also, many biblical words and expressions have special/spiritual meanings that cannot be found in the hitherto prevailing dictionaries and encyclopedias, even the strong's lexicon is poor to explain these things, because they can be discerned/experienced/appraised only spiritually i.e. through the process of practicing the faith in the true One right enough
2 Peter 3:14-16 "be diligent to be found by Him in peace, spotless and blameless, and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation; just as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, wrote to you, as also in all his letters, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which the untaught and unstable distort, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction.",
1 Corinthians 2:14-16 (NIV) "The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. The person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments, for, “Who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ.",
2 Corinthians 3:5-6 "Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God; Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life."
