I don't dislike Rap music (or the hip-hop culture) per se, but most mainstream rappers (Eminem, 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg...etc.) have some of the most vile lyrical content that I honestly don't see how professing Christians can even stomach it. It's not necessarily the sound of the music, but the content. There are some Christian rappers whom I do enjoy...KJ-52, The Cross Movement, Raiders of the Lost, Tunnel Rats, LA Symphony, Grits...etc. However, Rap isn't really my forte. I personally listen to Christian Blackmetal, and believe me, I do sympathize. Most Christians hear my music and swear up and down, DESPITE the lyrics, that it is the spawn of Satan himself. But then again I think that Country music is the spawn of Satan. :p If you really enjoy Rap as much as you claim, then check out some of the Christian rappers. I would imagine that some of their lyrical content would make for some very interesting conversation and debate topics at your university. :)

Personally I find teeny-bopper pop just as being just as damaging as it encourages 12-year old girls to dress like prostitutes and flaunt their bodies, but hey that's for another thread.

SPEAK ENGLISH!
word.

i love black people to death, but that doesn't mean i need to use words that end in "izzle".

just a word of advice to John the Apostle: when debating something on an online message board, finding creative ways to pervert the english language doesn't help your case. It will generally lead to other people not taking you seriously.

just some friendly advice.

we-ell.. i guess rap is acceptable if the lyrics are of a positive note. (think Black Eyed Peas "Where is the love") What surprises me is that most rap aficionados don't even bother to check the meaning behind the lyrics and just ramble them subconsciously just for the "feel". And it's not just only rap... all the other secular songs, too. Just because I like some singer does not mean I am entitled to endorse the negativity of the lyrics of some song she/he sang.

*snicker* ^_^

It just goes to show that the kid actually has the potential for intelligence, for some odd reason however, he prefers to be viewed as ignorant. Shame really. :sigh:

LOL.

Imagine all the times people type "Lol" or "Lmao" at a funny statement- how many times do you think these people actually crack up, actually are laughing out loud? Not many... but this was one of them LOL...

They're philosophers, poets, intellectuals, and they have good beats. Their lyrics are superb -- rhyme style amazing. Overall just great rhyme sayers. They're infinitely better at freestyle than the average rapper, as well. I'll share some of Sage's lyrics:

Sage Francis said:
Sun set and sun rise I'm my own personal light show
Flipping switches...moving from basin bottoms to plateaus
The Earth...manipulates itself beneath me
I stand still...stagnate. Can't kill...this lagged state

Life...manipulates itself around me, but I'm dead still
Upright...but dead still
Word is still born...I will not stoop to the level of the stoop
that y'all chill on
If the building's boarded up and the children of the corn
-er Liquor Store don't want to kick it no more...
because holes have filled the wall, sneakers are scuffed & toes
have become sore

...and here's some Aes Rock stuff:

Aesop Rock said:
It's the year of the silkworm
Everything I built burn yesterday
Let's display the purpose that these stilts serve
Elevate the spreading of the silk germ
Trying to weeble web but all that I believe in is dead
Nah brother, it's the year of the jackal
Saddle up on high horse
My torch forced Polaris embarrassed
Shackle up the hassle by the dooming legend marriage
I bought some new sneakers
I just hope my legacy matches

My opinion is not to get anyone angry, which is where this thread has went with a few cases. I don't deny that some, not much but some rap does have its glimers of lyrical genious, however as a musician myself, I hold a lot more respect if the artists actually participate in the making of the music. A song is not only about the lyrics, but about the feeling in them, dramatized by the chord progressions of a real band.
