I like some rap....some I don't like. I'm new to the board, and have been grazing around all the threads and stuff. I've really enjoyed the open debate. I hope you don't mind my jumping in and saying something about this.

One T'Poc song really made an impression on me because of the lifestyle I used to lead. Wonder Why They Call You........ alright, that one, when I sat down and actually listened to the words, it opened my eyes to a few things in my own life. I don't want to give out too much information about that, I'm sure if you have heard the song, then you will understand. 'Nuff said. Now, I cannot listen to the song any longer, because it takes me back to a life I turned away from, and I don't like going back there. What was said about using words for the shock value to get your attention, don't remember who posted that, but here's my take on it. I think that the Lord can and will use whatever to get your attention, the way He used this song to get mine.

Every genre has it's good and bad. That's a given. Just like there in an art gallery, what one person thinks is a great piece of artwork, then next person may think is a piece of junk. One may find a song inspiring, no matter what genre it's from, someone else may find it the most offensive piece of music ever written. I know the lyrics to the song I mentioned above by heart, I could type it from memory, but I won't. I don't want to do anything that might be considered inflamatory, especially on only my second day here! LOL, that wouldn't be good. And since I don't know if typing them, and editing out the vulgarity, would be offensive to anyone, I'll just leave that alone.

The op's question, why do you hate rap music? Well, I don't. I like pretty much all type of music. What I prefer to do is to take it by song. I don't "condemn" the artist if I don't like one or more of their songs, chances are, they have one that I do like. My music collection is so eclectic, it's not even funny. Not a single one of my playlists on my computer sticks to one specific genre, it just depends on what type of mood I am in when I start poking through my music. Anyway, I hope y'all don't mind a newbie poking her nose in here. I know I have probably been redundant and repeated myself, LOL, see there^^^^^^^^^^^^^^I did it again, just now<ha and again. Seriously, I love this message board. I have been here for several hours. Can't seem to leave the computer, I've enjoyed exploring, and now, I am afraid, it's after 3 in the morning, and I have to. Have a good night everyone.

80% of the rhyme sayers I listen to are white.

Edit: I'm white and I recently won a freestyle battle at my school  .

So, what? Black people shouldn't listen to Metal or any other type of rock since it's a "white thing"? Or americans shouldn't listen to Classical music since practically all of it is an "European thing"?

But I think you were joking, right? You couldn't have been serious.

Once again everyone is finding reasons to justify cursing.

Read Romans 3:13-14 No one is righteous but the spirit of God but rather Jews and Gentiles are under sin. As it is written

Their thoats are open graves;
their tongues pratice deceit.
The poison of vipers is on their lips.
Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.

Try reading this in the bible. Remember the bible is the truth.

John 8:32 And ye shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.

Anyone can listen to whatever they want but the topic here shouldn't be personal justification of opinion of what is ok for them but the question was Why do people hate rap? If the bible points out that cursing is wrong and a sin then why would we want to continue to grieve the spirit.

Read Romans 12:9 Love must be sincere, hate what is evil, cling to what is good. As Christians we must love these rappers just as much as we love fellow Christians. It clearly states here that we can hate the sin. Cursing is a sin so there is no reason to try and justify it as morally correct. How can we show Love through evil words and thoughts.

Let's get into the word before we just go and make our own claims of what is personally right in are walk.

I am not here to argue for I was once guilty of Listening to Secular Heavy metal as a Christian but now that I know the truth the truth has set me free.

This is how I see it:
People can like any type of music they want...but frankly the "generic message" that rapper's are sending is not a positive or moral one. I don't listen to rap because of this "generic message". I don't go out looking for the rappers they go against the grain and don't use this message because frankly I find no talent in "talking" really fast to a beat. I do not mean to offend rapper fans. But this is my opinion. And people really should stop calling people ignorant because they do not agree with their opinion. Opinions are what define a person's personality...not what makes them ignorant. Anyways...I perfer classical music (Bach, Beethoveen, etc.) and I also enjoy very much Journey. I also listen to soundtracks (Gladiator, LOTR, A Beautiful Mind, etc.) Rap just isn't my "thing".

cursing as described in the passage you posted means "cursing someone" such as a curse. Not a curse word. There is a world of difference. And stay on topic man.

When was the last time you heard mainstream rap that was similar to Shakespeare as far as eloquence and timelessness of theme goes?
Actually, the song "I Used to Love Her" by Common Sense (now known as "Common") comes to mind when I think of lyrical and thematic eloquence, timelessness and relevance. These things DO exist in rap music - from a number of artists. As a poet myself, I've never looked to Shakespeare as defining the pinnacle of poetic excellence. I would encourage you to check out that song by Common Sense. There are other classics out there too that bear hearing. If you get a chance and you want to hear some rap music that uses unorthodox types of beats, has lyrical complexity, comes from a well-read, educated, socially aware and creative mind and uses live instrumentation - you could also listen to either of Saul Williams' albums.

My feeling is that though one is free to like or dislike whatever type of music they wish, your comment sounded rather uninformed. I mean to say that perhaps you are unfamiliar with the spectrum of rap music. Rap music is something that stretches across continents, neighborhoods, social status, languages, genres and covers a huge variety of topics. It spans from the sacred to the profane. For those who are hoping it's a fad. That's fruitless. It's been around for more than 30 years and has been played nationally on the radio for 28 years. It's not going away. As for what you hear on mainstream radio today, one cannot judge the quality of rap music by what's played on mainstream radio any more than one could judge the quality of any other popular music. Mainstream radio feels no responsibility to bring people quality music - in any genre. It's big business, a commercial enterprise out to make money, plain and simple. If that means feeding the public with mediocre music, then that's what the general public will (and does) get.

I remember a long time ago, when a friend of mine used to play this real ancient country music for me whenever I would come over to his house to hang out. Initially, I found it to be irritating. But then I noticed that my buddy was watching to see if I was listening. So I did. In fact, I tried to step outside of my comfort zone and hear it from my friend's ears. When I did that, I started to see what it was he liked about it. And it really wasn't bad at all. The moral of the story? Listen without prejudice. There are different qualities that characterize different types of music. One would do well to talk to the fans and supporters of a particular unfamiliar music and try to listen through their ears. It would be unfair for me as a reggae fan to say I don't like opera because opera doesn't have the skanking guitars or the heavy bass guitar on the 1 and 3 beats. Opera should be studied and listened to and appreciated on it's own merits.....and so should rap and other genres of music.

Personally, I love music, period. What is my favorite kind? Actually it is the kind that uplifts Jesus and talks of His love and mercy. That's what speaks the deepest to my heart. Yet my ears are open to hearing many other types of music.

I'm interested in tearing down walls and borders. There are too many of them existing that keep us all divided.

First off...wow...

anyways my first point is that rap really isn't even music. there should be a whole different section for it in fact... i'm thinking that "Chaotic disorganized rambling garbage" is a good one. or better yet "people who can't play instruments huddling around a mic swaring and "rhyming" with a previously created drum machine rythm."
Here's a point to ponder: why doesn't rap have instrumentals? oh yeah, cuz there are no instruments! just machines and random samples, usually that don't pretain to anything.
Quite honestly i just can't listen to it for more than ten seconds without jamming a pencil in my ears, that's the main reason i can't stand it. And if the new rule is that people can make up their own words to rhyme, well then i could be the next big thing myself. And this is just the beginning of why i can't stand it...
Second of all, how can you tell me that you get anything positive out of it? You all claim that we're "not listening to the right stuff". I've been hearing this for a year and i'm curious....What??? I've heard a few rap artists with some descent messages, and ok i'll give you that, it does depend on the artist (either way i still can't stand the music, so the message really doesn't effect that much...). But for the most part it's: a) degrading to woment b) glorifies violence c) glorifies drug use and d) glorifies worldy possesions. i think that's enough for me to hate it...
thank you for wasting my time with your uneducated post. I look forward to more.

:sigh: so quick to judge....there's a group called The Roots, if you didn't know, and they all play instruments, and they play them live, too. Also, lots of other rap artists are beggining to use live instrumentals in their performances.

You have no clue what you're saying. And just because you don't like something doesn't mean it's inferior, y'know?

Sage's band "Art Official Intelligence" makes all of their beats using instruments.
